wow… wow… the price not stop going down?????

    • +3

      It’s getting ridiculous!

  • Is it really that ghetto for a PS5 drive? haha

Have been after one for a while for the PS Plus games!

    • +9

Ghetto in that it doesn't meet minimum speeds, but will still be supported. Real world tests indicate very little difference so ghetto is a pretty colourful choice of language :)

      • I mean if it is supported, it’s supported right? Did anyone experience any issues with the SSD when it is used in a Ps5?

        • +1

Use anything you want as long as it’s Gen 4. I’m not using this brand but another cheap one and no issues at all. It will “fail” the speed test when first installed but it makes no difference.

        • +2

Not yet, but if it is slower than the speeds Sony says is required, then I guess maybe one day there might be problems. I played it safe and got a Samsung drive that met the requirements.

        • +1

It is not officially supported. However, Sony currently doesn't enforce SSDs must pass the initial read test nor blacklist any PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs.

While I agree with the other OZBers comments here (it will work), I was flamed last night (by saying SN770 could be used for PS5) when someone who truly believes things could turn ugly later on (i.e. future games may not work).

    Controller: InnoGrit IG5220
NAND: YMTC TLC (could vary, no guarantee you won't end up getting QLC)

    • That mini user review sure is confusing. He put this PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD into a PCIe gen 2 x4 slot (guessing B450 board, secondary m.2 slot). But the result, even on PCIe gen 2 x4 is bad. It feels like either AData screw up the firmware big time or it has compatibility issue with gen 2 x4.

      • All drives without DRAM slow down quickly when even a few GB is copied within the drive or to another drive.. Some of the new SSD and motherboards can use the system DRAM to assist, but at a greater risk of data corruption if there is a power outage.

    Good deal.

Need 4TB drives to drop as well please

What’s with the recent influx of SSD sales at bargain prices?

    • +3

The NAND market has been suffering a downturn so prices are at historic lows, it's expected to continue into Q1 2023.

      • +17

        Back to the future

      • You mean Q1 2024?

        • Yeah 2024, my bad.

    • +6

B tier brands - Silicon Power, Team, PNY, ADATA, Leven, Lexar, Transcend, Kingston's NV2 line - buying up cheap NAND that is being dumped and passing on the savings

Plenty of Intel QLC, Micron QLC and now YMTC TLC deals coming soon

      • +1

You make QLC sound good. Couple replies above yours makes QLC sound bad. Confused face.

        • He didn't I thought. You could interpret it as a warning that component swaps to QLC NAND is coming up?

      • Lexar/Longsys and Transcend higher end models are OK. Transcend has industrial grade SSD also

  • -1

Is this compatible with Dell G7 17 laptop?

  • +3

    Don't buy QLC!Don't buy QLC!Don't buy QLC!

Speed will be very very very slow when more than half the capacity is used.

    • It will be time for TLC replaced by QLC as it almost reaches its max speed?

      • QLC, no… it is pretty ugly still. However, I am wondering what SSD makers will do with PCIe gen 5 x4. Up to 16 channels, instead of 8.

        • Gen 5 SSD is at over 10 GM/s in a review video by Linux Tech and I thought whould RAM and SSD be combined in the future

          • +1

@Bii: SSD replacing RAM won't happen any time soon. The issue is latency. RAM latency is measured in nanoseconds (ns) whereas SSD latency is measured in microseconds (µs). The difference is 1000X. It is that difference which makes RAM important.

Try google this: 1 microsecond to nanosecond

            DDR4-3200 CL16 (ns). First gen PCIe gen 5 x4 SSD latency - Phison E26: 33 µs.

For PC, RAM upgrades are relatively cheap. Mac, however, is a different matter. The Macbook Pro M1 Pro I have has a SSD that does 7000MB/s read (so proper PCIe gen 4 x4) and 5000MB/s write. Lack of sufficient RAM means when I open a lot of work related apps, I can run into situation where virtual memory is required. When that happens, it is very noticeable and very painful. Switching apps (already loaded in memory, but parts now in VM / SSD) is really slow and even Web browsing can be affected.

  • Bifurication x570 baby

    • Yeah, 6 PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs. 4 from the bifurcation.

Right now, unless the review shows the exact model number and you manage to get one with the exact same model and batch, for all these non Samsung, WD, Seagate brands, there is component lottery (I didn't include Crucial because Crucial has been know to do a TLC to QLC swap, WD has done that to the Green series as well).

Before buying a PNY SSD, I saw a review indicating YMTC or Crucial inferior grade NANDs for the SSD, but the one I received uses a totally different NAND. Kingston A400, dirt cheap and a lot of reviews indicate TLC. Actual unit received is a QLC (and to add insult to injury, there are pre-marked bad blocks, so basically inferior grade QLC).

    • Is there a piece of software you can use to determine whether you have a drive with QLC or TLC?

Unaware of equivalent apps available for Samsung and WD. Be aware that some of these utilities, after running it, if not closed fully or terminated incorrectly, could lock the SSD (because it needs exclusive access to read the SSD flash ID). If that happens, you may need to fully shutdown the computer and restart it. Reboot may not be sufficient.

So which one do you download if you wanted to check this ADATA ssd?

          • +1

            @Blitzfx: Same question LOL

Of the long list of dodgy looking .rar files to download, which one should I choose that gives me the least malware and cryptominers? :-D

    • any idea which brands are reliable tlc?

  • +2

In China, YMTC based 2tb solution has been this price for quite a while already. Even the TLC + HMB Gen 4x4 variants can be obatined for about $130.

    • +1

List them here if you don't mind.

Thing is, the first one we've seen here with that combo (not counting this deal) was $149. While that one does review quite well for most benchmark apps and low queue depth tasks (which do benefit general public), when stressed and consistency tested (i.e. server and database tasks), it does show its weaknesses and to be fair, so do majority of DRAMless SSDs.

Dodgy Kingston NV2 2TB was $129. This 2TB deal is $109 and Innogrit + YMTC NAND combo seems possible (with local warranty). The issue with the $149 one is that another Innogrit IG5236 DRAM controller based SSD (roughly in the same class as Phison E18) with Micron NAND is $30 more. So, it is being sandwiched between dirt cheap and high end, with its price happens to be in the middle. Not easy to get very excited about it.

fanxiang s790, aigo p7000z, asgard an4+, just to name a few, all use the same YMTC TLC + MAXIO MAP1602 chip. You can read the review in Chinese here: https://post.smzdm.com/p/am8ovmzd/
I got the fanxiang s790 2tb for $120 yesterday, and getting a friend to bring it for me. It is otherwise quite hard to get one in Australia.

        • Based on reading the user comments, assuming Google Translate is correct, there is one comment indicated that in April, S790 started the usual thing all SSD makers are doing… yeah, component swap, NAND swap.

I suggest you run both flash id utility and depending on whether you are willing, a full drive write test. NV2 is annoying because I know some of the reviewers got better models than me.

I hope you actually get an older model / batch. That's the thing with NV2 as well, older models are likely better. Damn it, for S790, check is also required.

@netsurfer: I will only use these guys for gaming / storage drive, but then, even samsung 980/990 have issues. YMMV.

            • @pkjames: Right now, to get an equivalent here costs $29 more (Lexar NM790), one of the retailers here will sell you the same controller and "likely" the same NAND with 5 years warranty.

Any chance you can teach us how to get it for ~560 RMB? Comments on that page only show March pricing. The price has dropped a fair amount since then.

              • @netsurfer: JD.com
Their returns and repair policy is great if you can somehow get it to / from china
