Axis 6.75in Head Unit with Apple Carplay/Android Auto $299 + $12 Postage (Free C&C) @ Repco (Free Membership Required)

90

Cheap Android auto/Car play head unit. Mixed reviews, negatives mention the slow interface. Seems worth a go at this price if you're on a budget. If you have room for a double DIN unit, this will fit your car, but you will either need a kit or be willing to splice some wires.

Member price is $299, membership is free.

  • Running a 2012 linux kernel? Or running EasyOS with a custom GUI?

  • I have this, performance seems ok but it's my first time using Android Auto so hard to judge. Can't for the life of me get wireless to work, only the rear USB port works for Android Auto/Carplay and it consumes more power than it charges through the rear port

And right there is why you pay a bit more and get a reputable brand

      • what's the best bang for buck around the $700 range

      • Yeah, I wouldn't have bought this one for myself :)
Head unitsare expensive though so I feel like this is a decent price for local stock

you may as well spend like another $50 and get a decent 3-4 GB RAM, 32-64 GB ROM android head unit from aliexpress instead with fascia, and adaptors designed for your car .

If you simply just buy this android auto/apple car play compatible head unit you will still need to spend extra $$ on getting fascia, and adaptors (like aerial radio convertor, or ISO to quadlock etc.) for your car (expect that to do at least $50 too if buying from like bricks and motor store (Repco, SCA, autobarn etc.)

I just installed one of these for a friend, $360 with coupon discount. The speed and features for the price are very hard to beat. Plus it has warranty and next day delivery with Prime. Blows my older, VW specific Android unit out the water for responsiveness. Highly recommend.

Each car will likely have different setup
        Some needing extra canbus too.
Some people will spend extra $$ for reverse camera, and/or mobile data 4G sim add on
        others will spend extra $$ on DAB+ radio/panaroma 360* camera/GPS.

Me personally the total cost for my stereo upgrade was

$157 USD android Stereo head unit with fascia, canbus, 4G sim, 3GB +32 GB storage option
        +Tax 10%
+ Currency exchange charge (or pay in AUD at aliexpress)
+ $10 USD for AHD reverse camera (camera quality is better than what toyota dealer instead on my dad's car while charging him like 100's of $$ for it)
        - Cheddar $70 cashback -No longer there now, Max you can get in cashback nowadays from aliexpress is $15 AUD during upsized events (so not worth that much waiting for on cashbackers upsize)
        - any aliexpress/ store coupons

Overall cost to me ~~ $220 ish AUD

Keep in mind whatever seller/aliexpress listing says - You will never get exact match in specs on these cheap radios - there will be some specs manipulation such as giving you android 10 instead of 12, or 17 GB instead of 32 GB

  • Was looking at this one a few months ago. Was hesitant about the performance however it was the lack of physical volume buttons that turned me away

You can get real brands of CarPlay/AndroidAuto units like the Sony https://www.bankstownsound.com.au/product/sony-xav-ax3200/ for not much more cash, and there's way more chance of being able to find the correct interfaces for a named brand.
As usual go to https://www.aerpro.com.au to find out what parts you need to connect one to your car.

Don't buy an unbranded unit like this one unless you have a very simple car with zero steering wheel controls, reverse sensors, etc. unless you can confirm the necessary parts exist to connect everything.

Note that the cost of the actual unit may only be about half your total spend, some cars need a significant amount of parts to do the install properly. Generally you'll need a facia kit, an interface for your steering wheel controls, and an interface to pass in the audio from the reverse sensors, at a minimum - but it's all plug and play.
