Oh how I wish they’d stuck with Intel for hardware Plex decodes!

I was looking to upgrade my DS1019+ and what I found is all the newer Synology units are not good any longer if you plan to host a Plex server with transcoding HEVC (H265) content…

These newer NAS units like the DS923+ are using an AMD Ryzen CPU compared to the older units that use to use an Intel CPU that included support for hardware accelerated transcoding… So if you plan to use this unit as a Plex server check into your needs and uses before pulling the trigger to ensure it will do what you need it to…

Quick comparison document of NAS units that might be of help to some regarding Plex support:

You generally don't need transcoding in Plex unless you're using really old playback devices or you're trying to play content over the internet via a slow connection - for most home users watching in the same home, no transcoding is not an issue πŸ‘

This is true but as above I do stream my plex content out and about and to friends houses so I quite often use transcoding.. my wife also often will decide to transcode a lower quality copy to her phone whilst getting ready for work to watch on the bus..etc.. just makes things much faster I find (Granted she could do this the night before and let is process via software for that case but remote play a friend that got a newer Synology box even with 100/40 NBN keeps getting buffer issues constantly whilst trying to watch content were he can stream from my box no issues)… Just a little disappointing as I too wanted to upgrade or get a 2nd Synology box but the new CPU's they are using has put me off personally as I was hoping for 4K hardware transcoding in the newer boxes so many years later but seems they have taken a step back not forwards IMHO…

      • Yeah. As an anecdote I had a 4K BD rip I was having issue with to my reasonably new TV, discolouration, stuttering audio dropping out etc. Used transcoding as my solution so was happy to have it .. then I found out that on a lot of smart TV's the ethernet is 100MB .. switched the TV to wifi .. not my preference .. but it was a faster network connection and I no longer needed transcoding.

        • Was this a straight rip without any recompression ?
Most normal 4K Blu Ray rips are around 20GB in size, their data rates are way way less than 100Mb.

But a full fat 4K Blu Ray can apparently get as high as 128Mb ! Normally not an issue cos rips are generally further compressed as above…

          • @Nom: Yeah a 60GB rip…. first time I 'did' one of these.. was sick of pulling out the 4K disk but wanted the quality still. (also have it on Apple streaming .. but I find my Plex better. - less buy my other stuff advertising for starters).

But also .. WTF is with 100MB connections these days.. apparently its because they cheap out on a combo chip with USB or something saving $3 on a rrp 3K tv lol.

            • @Elijha: Well the 100Mb is ample for literally every video rip known to man … as long as it's been compressed from the source 😁 A direct 4K Blu Ray is the only way you're going to hit that limit.
99% of the time, it's enough to get the job done πŸ‘

I have a UPS that only has a 100Mb port, which I can't even connect to my Switch cos that particular switch can only drive 10Gb and 1Gb transceivers πŸ˜‚ I had to bodge a USB Ethernet into the back of my server to give me a way to get it onto my network πŸ’€

        I disagree.

You always need transcoding if you are playing on multiple devices - iphone, ipad, 1080p tv, 4k tv, etc…

not having transcoding would be a deal breaker if playing on multiple devices!

Thanks for the reminder about this spreadsheet! Hardware transcoding is definitely a deal breaker for me too

  • Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • So is the DS723+ the "same" with only two bays and 2gb ram over the 4gb in the 823+
