Download your google maps at home before leaving the country.

      • I am not talking about driving navigation.

When traveling abroad, you need walking direction, finding attraction and restaurant, checking reviews……etc etc. These has nothing to do with downloading maps.

    • Eh, I’m averaging around 200mb day out and about/relying on home wifi.

      • -5

I know a lot people are trying to save money and stick to the cheap Monthly/Yearly sim plus NBN, which cheapest is $55 plus $5-10 per sim, but…

You really have to experience large data plan to understand why it is better. Granted I have 1 sim that is paid by work. yet under any circumstances I don't think I can go back to fix connection after so many years on mobile only. Currently a setup of 2 mobile + 1 data sim currently @ Optus 560G for $138 or Voda 360G for $130, which does seem a bit pricy. A good alternative is to get a cheap sim for call plus sim hopping on a data sim special like the Mate deal with 120G for $1 for three months.

        • Cool, but I’m overseas.

As if I’m going to turnover 600gb/month on a mobile connection.

          • @Manny Calavera: Its not about how much data you use overseas.

The beauty of Vodafone's $5 roaming is you don't have to worry about anything else. You can keep receiving and making calls and use your data as you were in Australia.

On that note roaming option from Optus and Telstra sucks big time.

            • +1

@syswong: Yeah, but who’s with skodaphone?

              And if you’re gone for a month, there’s $150.

            • @syswong: The Optus roaming deal has got more competitive with Vodafone, $5/day for 5GB.

              • @Quarter Pounder: Yes it is except it restrict you from using more than 5G B a day. Not likely to happen when you are overseas traveling but highly possible if you are working as well.

The Vodafone way is just easier, especially if your plan is 150GB data or bigger.

  • +4

Sounds like it's perfect for travelling overseas for bridging between just landed and getting a cheaper local SIM.

    • That's the idea. Plan to go to Vietnam at end of the year. Get the SIM in airport is expensive compare to at Bui Vien' backpacker area

    • Exactly what I'm getting it for. The data plans aren't too expensive either for convenience of not having to find local Sim while travelling

    • +1

Or just survive on the 1.5Gb (and enjoy your holiday instead of watching your phone)

    • Exactly.
This will enable you to use G Maps, taxi apps, etc until you get to a normal (non-airport) store in whatever country you're in.
Airport "tourist" SIM plans are almost always poor value.

Having said that I'm not keen on the privacy issue.

  • Smooth setup, although the code needs to be redeemed in a separate section after signing and getting the Esim

  • +1

Well good global coverage but why no Singapore

  • Either the countries supported is outdated or they're breaking sanctions with Russia supposedly listed here. The company is Singapore-owned whom currently has enforced sanctions with Russian-based providers. If you're traveling to Russia right now, you either buy a Russian-owned eSIM (easy, Airalo are Russia-owned), or buy a SIM after you arrive.

I suspect this company is actually just a white-labelled Airalo.

By using this service, you'll need to accept your personal data is likely being siphoned off. But that's the case for most eSIM providers (and budget online VOIP providers).

    • +3

Singapore owned but the sim cannot be used in Singapore? Interesting.

    • Oh, I was worried about this and just asked. Will take note of eSim providers.
Quick question: when traveling, if you’re using wifi from hotels, is it safe? I haven’t been overseas for a long time. Is it best to just use roaming from Oz carrier as the lines can be compromised in Asian countries?

      • +1

If you're truly worried, use a VPN. If you're doing things like online banking, your banking apps for example will require TLS (a form of encryption) which likely, if a government has secretly cracked/hacked, won't waste it on finding out your net worth.

If you're concerned about being caught doing something you shouldn't online (eg breaching local laws), you'll need a VPN. I'd suggest seeing if your router at home supports OpenVPN (TP-Link for example does), and connecting to that when breaching local laws. Failing that, I'd look at a well-renowned VPN provider, such as Mullvad, or an Australian-owned and operated VPN company.

        • Ok, I’ll just use banking app and guess it should be safe.

I have kids to worry about so don’t think I want to play with VPN for anything that breaks the law. That sounds like a lot of work. I just want a stress-free holiday.

  • Ukraine lol

  • Sorry if someone has asked before but is this a reputable carrier? Planning to travel soon so was going to just use roaming from Australian carrier. Is it worth doing travel sim? Just worried of data hack like Optus.

  • Perfect. Fly out to Bali this weekend and saves me from having to buy a Sim. Cheers OP!

    • +1

They seem to roam to Telkomsel as well, which is the provider that you'd want in Indonesia for the best coverage. Not bad at all!

      • Win win! Might top up if I run out so the lucky referrer might get an extra 500mb too

  • Good timing! Traveling to Vietnam for 10 days in July. Hope this will be sufficient!

Can I create another account with my wife’s number and then use her account on my phone?

    • Yep, should work.

    • I tried to do the same on iPhone but the account sort of ties to your device id and it keeps saying you can’t login to a different mobile number.
Let us know if you can work it out and importing new esim

  • What is a virtual eSIM?

    • Replaces a physical SIM. I’ve been using one for years, once you get the first one setup the next time is easy.

      • Thanks. I know what an eSIM is. Just never heard of virtual eSIM, as in there is ever a real/physical eSIM?

        • Oh haha yeah a fancy name for the same thing maybe?

  • -5

So non of you guys heard of $5 roaming from Vodafone that allow you to use your Data allowance while overseas?

    • +3

$5 per day - what if you're travelling for 4-6 weeks over the next 2 years?
      Also, free > $5

      • -4

Use Japan as example, a hotspot rental will cost at least the same or more, and you can't make or receive call with your Australia number with hotspot rental. Similar situation to other countries.

Yes, you can restrict you internet use while oversea you will be banging your head when you need that critical information but has not / poor WiFi. Japan again…. have an good active internet makes a big difference.

I don't understand one would spend thousands on air fares and hotels but get stingy on $5 a day roaming?

        • +1

ya, I used Vodafone extensively in the last few years, but switched to Optus this year when they started the $5 roaming as well. Like you suggested, I am happy to keep my number while roaming overseas :)

          • +1

@hardwest7: I was on both. While the 5G per day of Optus should work for most people, me and my wife were concern as all out devices were setup to update and download on mobile network plus we still have to do some work while away. So we just have everything hotspot off my Vodafone device. Turn out the concern was justified as one day she has to use the roaming on Optus as we were going separate places. 4G of data was used just by herself, Imagine if we were hotspoting off her Optus……

        • $5 a day … you are crazy. Survived on under $1 in Europe https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/709184
And please hand in your Ozbargain licence when you pay thousands on flights (it got more expensive … but there are still deals)

          • @mini_wombat: I wrote "thousands on air fares and hotels" not just flights. Not toention any decent international flight plan with short stopover or direct are in the 4 figures anyway so two of us is in the thousands.

        • +1

its usually cheaper to buy travel sim or local sim when travelling for extended periods of 2weeks or more than spending $5 a day

i dont know who the hell still needs sms sent to their number aside from sms 2fa (instead of using a 2fa app) but worst case scenario you can enable that adhoc for the 1 day u need it and use travel sim for the rest of the time

$5/day for 30 days is $150 vs $30 travel sim for the same period stress free

          • +1

@furythree: Agree more than two weeks are better with local sim, especially in East Asia. Japan is a very different case …

For some reason data in Japan is not cheap. That is why you will see most travel Sim for Japan include much less data compare to other Asian country. Some claim unlimited with throttle after you use up the include data. I use those before and the throttle is really painful. Large data Sim are usually rent out which you have to return and usually expensive.

I would love to have a travel Sim for Japan with 30G-50G and reasonable priced, I haven't find one so far.

Then there is the issue with voice call which is almost non existent. Don't know why all Japan sim is data only….

            • +1

@syswong: didnt realise japan specifically was this painful

there havent been any sim plans that include japan?

              https://simsdirect.com.au/collections/esim-japan

This one is 35-45$ esim (i think non esim is data only)

around 10gbs is more than enough data. just use hotel wifi for any serious data transfer
use data calling like whatsapp for calls with friends family

            • @syswong: If 30gb with airalo or sims direct isn’t enough for Japan, get a portable wifi. Paid 60ish from ivideo with unlimited data

              • @crentist: I can see a 20gb on airalo which is enough especially my trip usually no more than two weeks. I would not consider anything less as I went through about min 1.5-2gb a day last time round. For that is why most travel sim is not really an option.

Portable hotspot is not as good as one may think. I had use many and they all have very low high speed data and the way I use them they throttle within days of data reset. I did saw iVideo after my travel last time and they are competitive and offer big data allowance but review is very mixed so I am not sure I should risk it.

Mobal also has some good option and with voice too but they are not cheap, mostly equal or more expensive than roaming.

                • @syswong: I was getting 20mbps on ivideo, it’s fine. Lived off it for a couple of months, including plenty of video calls and fortnite updates. Never noticed throttling

  • +1

This is great, thanks OP. Was looking for a low cost one as we would rarely use it.

  • Anyone has this working? Redeem the data and connected the esim via qr code but not connecting to Optus. Have restarted phone and put into airplane

    • Works for me, Pixel 5 and 6.. took a few minutes at first, and both successfully connected to Optus.

    • +2

Works for me on iPhone 11 and pixel 6. Have you turned on data roaming?

      • Yeah. Had to enable data roaming before i got connected.

    • +1

I had to manually set the APN username and password to 65ideas

  • Good find
    Cheers mate

  • It's really strange Singapore isn't included in the list of countries considering it says SingTel.
    Can anyone confirm ?

    • +1

Yep I asked support (who are in Singapore funnily enough) and they are fighting it. We needed eKYC to get it there so hopefully they can sort that one out soon.

  • This only works if you have a phone that supports esim right?

    • +1

      Correct

    • +1

      and a Windows 10 PC apparently! 🤒

      • LOL what. Just done this on my s22 ultra and no windows pc was used. Just the phone.

  • I have a glitch with my app and not showing the esim QR code and no esim email. Message support staff and they fix the issue on my account.

  • Bummer… It has Malaysia, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries, but not Singapore….that's a bit strange.

    • Because this eSIM is provided by SingTel.

  • Reading the list of devices, it says NOT compatible with Pixel phones bought in Australia?!?! Wtf?

Can anyone confirm this is the case? (Specifically asking about a Pixel 7a bout from the Australian Google store)

    • Munka got it working on a pixel 7a.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13811022/redir

      • Thanks! Hope he had the Australian pixel 7a.
Such a weird excision for them to list

    • I read it as not compatible with Pixel 3 from Australia and 3A from SE Asia, etc. Other models (ie Pixel 4 and up) should be fine.

  • -2

It's always the weirdest deals that get upvoted on Ozbargain.

  • I have a global travel plan with Optus, so not interested in this. Part of me is concerned re: details they want… Maybe I'm paranoid

    • +4

No worries, Optus sold your details already.

    • +2

Can use fake details - no need for real info.

      • I did not know! Thanks, signed up with fake details. 😂 OzB - don't need, but will get.

  • +1

    Referral code is invalid

    • I only just signed up this afternoon and mine worked. Even got a referral email which I’m assuming is from someone here 👍🏽

    • Are you putting GOODTOFLY in the referral field?

      • no, referral is a user. goodtofly add later after user account created.

  • -1

With all the debate on Japanese roaming, I though I include below for you guys…..

    https://www.cable.co.uk/mobiles/worldwide-data-pricing/#pric…

I now understand why the Japanese tolerate all the ad bombardment to use public wifi service. They don't have a choice!!

Never realize we have it so good here down under…… and people are still complaining😓😓

  • I've used GOODTOFLY code but only got 1gb instead o 1.5gb, anyone else on the same boat?

    • +4

Did you click on the referal bonus first?

You click on referer link. Then it opens the eskimo app.

You get 500MB to start. Then when you add the coupon code you get extra 1GB.

      • No I must have clicked the main link & apply the code, hence only 1gb :( Thanks for clarifying.

        • +1

You can still apply the referral code even after signing up. Click on the link and you will be given a referral code, then apply that code the same way you redeemed the coupon code.

          • @xers: done just that, clicked on Referral link & it still took me to the main Eskimo page but I've noticed in the address bar it has the Referral code, however when I applied the code in the app it says the code is invalid :(

          • @xers: Tried again from my phone, now it says the 500mb thingy only applies to New accounts only, even though I'm new lol

            • +1

@MiaSanMia: Damn that's a shame. They must have changed it then.

  • -4

So I gave it a try. Installed the esim + app.
I just figured I would do a quick check to see what sort of data speeds I get here in Newcastle Australia. (Australia is on the list of supported countries) Turned on the esim + roaming + mobile data. Nothing ……….
This might just be a scam guys … the app has only 10k downloads. Has anyone actually got it working at all anywhere ? Can we get any reports of a working connection / speedtest ?

    • +3

I tried it last night. Connected. Opened ozbargain site. It open. Turned it off after that.

    • +1

Bit quick to beg a deal for those reasons. Firstly mobile data should be turned off as it’s for roaming. Secondly 10k downloads is decent for what I assume is a startup company.

      • -3

Fair point , I am not negging the deal per se . I mean can't complain about a free offer.
I just thought it was worthwhile to neg as this didnt seem to work for me.
Update : After about 5 minutes the LTE and H+ networks icons showed up and I could get 0.21Mbps speedtest in my location which is not really usable. Anyway I am off the USA - LA in a month I'll try it over there and report .

        • Again, no reason to neg so quickly before you tested it correctly. Now that is working, I would remove the neg if I was you as you are 1 of 520 and you’ve confirmed it works.

          • +1

@bobwokeup: Yeah fair call I'll remove it.
Another bloke in Parra got decent speeds maybe its on the vodaphone network here in AUS.

        • How was the service in LA?

    • +1

Heres what i was getting in parramatta, NSW. https://speedtest.net/result/i/5624884617

      • THanks for the reply. Looks legit i guess. Maybe its on the vodaphone network ?

        • +2

It's on the Optus network. Vodafone is forbidden.

          • @Quarter Pounder: Hmmmm dunno then … my other sim is with Amaysim which is also OPTUS network its getting decent speeds in the same spot. Maybe its a de-priortized data speed thing ? I know some of the cheaper services with "unlimited data" can be very very slow because they buy a low priority bandwidth. Cheers for the replies though mate.

          • -1

@Quarter Pounder: Actual sim seems to be Singtel Singapore

      • There goes the data quota

      • The latency of 120ms is interesting, suggesting it might be tunneled back via Singapore.

I've used Airalo SIMs before and bought one for NZ and found it had 600+ms latency because the SIM was issued from Liechtenstein! At that latency even web browsing is pretty bad.

It seems that when roaming all traffic is tunneled back to the SIM's home country so using local services can be pretty awful. Something to watch out for.

If Eskimo hands out Singaporean SIMs then that'd be pretty good for most places Aussies would go.

        • +1

The latency of 120ms is interesting, suggesting it might be tunneled back via Singapore.

Correct, It is roaming via singtel and does not have a local ip.

  • +2

I got this the day we left for Japan, going well so far on my wife and my iPhones. We have a portable wifi device - but this free 1.5gb each supplements between the battery dying on that and not being connected to hotel WIfI
