After many handheld deals we have something different for a change and this time it's this smart portable soldering iron that's a good alternative to Miniware TS80P and TS100.

This one features an OLED display which displays information like the heat up temperature, current temperature and more. With the buttons you can adjust settings including the temperature (80° to 420°), voltage gears (9V/12V/15V/20V/24V), child lock, sleep, auto power off etc. For power input it supports USB-C PD 65W and DC 94W with the DC barrel jack to USB-C adapter.

Another option for a portable Soldering Iron is the Pinecil, which is US$25.99 + US$11.99 Flat Rate Delivery.

Overall more expensive due to delivery, but since it flat rate you can pick up accessories and extra tips too (or split cost of delivery with friends/family).

Pinecil also doubles as a risc v development board (if you buy the break out board) and is open source + a bunch of other cool features.

    • That's the one I got over a year ago. Absolutely love it. Beats getting out the benchtop soldering iron for smaller jobs.

Can I just say that the video review is freaking fantastic? This is what a real review is. Bit of a rant, but I bloody hate the trend of high production quality "reviews" that focus more on pretty shots than having an actual opinion on the product itself. Stupid shills.

Anyway, I think the review sold me. I'm going to get one and I'm showing my friends this video.

      Eevblog is the best!

    • Yeah you can pretty much who are the shills by the thumbnail.

Perfect, now I can do modchips on public transport on my way to my real job

  • looks pretty uncomfortable to hold. look how big the thing is in the pictures

    • Review video does it better justice than the renders.

      • It's Terrible Muriel though… Not really sold on it based on the review video

He certainly got things wrong like not knowing how to screw the soldering tip in, which was corrected in the comments.

          • @Clear: Was there instructions when the product to show how, or did he just have to figure it out?

            • @Waynes world: Did you watch the video? He briefly looked at the instructions later in the video and in the pinned comment he said he assumed it was like another brand when it isn't.

  • Does it need to be powered via USB-C to work or can it be used cord free?

    • Has to be with USB-C. You could use a power bank.

      • thanks, sounds like I need a portable unit rather than this.

        • I've never found a self contained portable that works as well as these.
If this is on par with the Pinecil / TS-100 / TS-80P it's probably pretty good.
If you ever spot a self contained unit that comes close and up to double the price I'd be keen.

          • @virtual81: I’m only a hobbyist soldering 18-22awg cable here and there for Christmas lights. Getting on the roof and carrying out a repair whilst trying to juggle a power bank doesn’t seem easier than running a lead and sticking with a 240v iron. Maybe it is, I don’t know.

@Pavle: I've done a repair of a TV antenna BalUn on a roof with a TS-100 with a self made power cord (20V USB-PD trigger) to run it from a USB power bank. It was serviceable, but i agree an AIO would be good if it performed well.

Have run a mate's TS-80P with a 20Ah powerbank in my back pocket for work away from the bench and for a job i had under benches.

Have also used it in a car under a dash (the TS-100).

It's not the most perfect solution, being there is a cord, but it's thermal performance and thermal recovery is vastly superior to any self contained unit I've ever sampled.

I agree you could want for better to take on a roof, but I'd have no issues taking it up in a bag and deploying it on the roof occasionally.
Not perfect, but until I come across a good performing All In One it will do.

Buyer beware! They choose cut rate carriers and when the parcel goes missing they will ghost you, emails to their after sales support even fail:
