First post so be kind!

Saw this as part of the Amazon sale.

Been looking for Asus routers to replace my terrible Nest Mesh setup.

will this and a compatible extender be a good buy for my house (~200 sqm 4 rooms + detached garage) ?
Recently upgraded to FTTP 1000/50, been using 4 x Google Wifi (gen 1) meshed nodes on 250/25 just fine. But now they cannot keep up…

Its definitely better than Google WiFi.

Asus AIMesh allows multiple Asus devices to be used to form a mesh network. Also AX5400 means total throughput is 5400Mbps - way more than any plan offered in AU.

I'm in the same boat, shitty google wifi to nest wifi. Poor experience and so im stacking Asus now.

      • good to hear. about to pull the trigger on this one. which model are you planning to mesh with this one?

        • Anything cheap like this

          https://amzn.asia/d/eOK2zT6

        • exactly what i've got best on brief research as well.
will give it a go! It surely is not as stealthy as G wifi but i'll take it if it works to my expectation :)

          • @JC1986: Nah don't purchase a Wi-Fi extender for Gigabit. Look at the Asus ZenWi-Fi XD6S or XT8 mesh router products for a cleaner design. It will cost you more though.

Using this TP-Link AX5400 for over a year and its been very good with speeds. I am on 200/20 plan and I hit 200 plus everytime on wifi.

      • No TP-Link

Just upgraded from my Google WiFi routers - had a two-device mesh setup. Was worried I'd lose coverage, but this thing on its own has blown the Google devices out of the water. Fantastic device.

  • Got this for $223 a year ago through amazon UK. Was a bit of an impulse purchase at the time but since moving into a bigger place it's definitely showing its worth.

  • so what will this do that the ax56 at $120 won’t do ?

    • AX1800 vs AX5400??

  • A better comparison could be the AX92U or AX5400 … which is what I am looking into …

Some Asus TUF routers have defect in NVRAM: some functions are missing. Contacted Asus and troubleshooted with their support - at the end they called it "hardware issue".
1st symptom is missing Time Machine app in USB Applications.
I strongly suggest every Asus TUF router buyer to test every single function important for them out right and return router if function is not found\malfunctioning.

    • from my research the AX92U is very similar to the AX5400?
What are other things have I missed - is the AX5400 a generally better router for everyday/WFH usage??

      • From my interaction with Asus - they did assure me that their RT series is the top range and goes through tougher QA. I was looking to RT-AX92U myself after fiasco with TUF AX4200. So far I decided to give chance to Xiaomi AX9000 if it will be discounted to under $300 until end of June, otherwise I will consider Xiaomi AX6000 or AX7000.

I don't think there is a universal "Better router" or even a scale of routers where you can directly compare them, all depends on many different factors.
In my case, I have over 40 wifi devices (and growing) in lowset house so my number 1 priority is rough performance of router to be able maintain 100+ connections, mesh or good range is the next, I don't care about theoretical (single device sitting next to the router) speed - it has nothing to do with real life speeds, I'm ok with wired gigabit (not even 2.5Gb) connections to the desktop, TVs and secondary router. That's why I'm looking for AX9000 or 2x AX6000.
And budget of cause. Whole solution must be under $300.

        • Where to buy the Xiaomi AX9000 that doesn't charge $100 shipping (e.g. TechInn)?

Edit: found the specs and it sh*ts over the TUF-AX5400 and ZenWiFi XD6

          • @db2k: AliExpress.
Hardware specs are impressive, but all reviews pointing that firmware is seriously limiting it's functionality.

            • @SHPION: I can't find the link on AliExpress, can you please share?

There is a detailed thread on flashing firmware to CN which removes wifi limitations as the global ROM is set for EU.

Edit: also shipping from overseas sometimes has 10% GST added to the final price, so I'm not sure if the total will be under $300??

You can tell if tax is added or not by adding to cart and then you'll see a line item "Tax" on the checkout page… Around $370 delivered to AUS. Please correct me if I'm looking at the wrong item.
