  • Hi OP have you tried one? so is it basically a cut down android phone which can run any android apps (side loaded)? well thanks for the post, im a google will explain more also

    • +1

      Hello Italkdigital
Yes I just installed and configured it today. There are also tuya alternatives but you need to make sure you get the android version not linux
I'm not sure if it can run ANY android app, but you can sideload a lot of modern app as long as you update the android webview
There are a number of youtube videos that walk you through how to set it up as a home assistant control panel

Ok lets see if it works hopefully ive temoved the affiliate crap from url address,..

        Edit: yupz

AU$95.58 plus postage of $1.64 plus GST, what's that tad under $110?

        https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005003603790680.html?

Edit: wondering your version specificly states AU or maybe EU, I doubt US version

      • How did you wire it in?

        • +3

it backed onto a wall that had a power point on the other side
Just drilled a hole and stuck it on the wall

Here's what it looks like installed

          https://1drv.ms/i/s!AkvHoCSqlSXGissQicl9pDBzHrHoBw?e=5MWUVb

          • @AliG: Can't see image

          • @AliG: Who actually did the wiring im guessing a qualified electrician as its poweted by 240 volts AC

And wondering which model is yours? the US or EU version?

  • Im seeing them on Aliexpress, lowest price ive come across so far is AU$95.58 plus GST plus postage of $1.64, with 24th delivery date, though issue only EU and US versions available but im guessing EU would be close to our mains voltage of 240 volts 50hz AC, ok need to research further, I can't post weblink here as comes up as affiliate weblink Ozbargain is banning, ive already tried once, but interesting device so far, I wonder if these can be used to view footage from different branded security cameras I guess a problem to solve lolz

  • I doubt they can void hardware warranty for sideloading apps. Sony tried it with me with a phone a decade back when the touchscreen died, but I insisted they repair it and they did. Although that patrtcular model had a known issue with the screen and I sent them the links to articles discussing it.

    • Is ITEAD based or physically in aus?

      • they're in asia, but i received the unit within 1 week

    • The warranty is voided when you enable developer mode/adb
I can understand why because you can brick the device if you don't know what you're doing

  • Is this an in wall panel? Looks like it has a different size of AU switch panel, how can I install it to replace my old switch?

    • +1

this is a square shape like the wall plates used in Europe, they don't have a rectangular version of this so not sure if it will fit an existing hole. The standard NSpanel comes in a US version, which is the right shape for us, however that one doesn't run android so isn't as flexible (can still be flashed with ESPhome etc for local control).

  • As this is hard wired, i would want to ensure that this has ERAC National Certification for use in Australia. I know some sonoff switches are certified, but dont know if this is. Insurance companies love these sort of "outs".

    Edit: from linked deal-
    Certifications-CE/UKCA/ SRRC/RoHS

So, not approved for AU. Install at own risk

    • So better off using a cheap android tablet?

      • +1

Better still get android car stereo mount in the wall, it has 4 speaker output for ceiling speakers. Also Bluetooth you telly to it .Only downside have put a 12volt power in the wall as well….

        • Always wondered if that was possible and why nobody seems to do it. Good one!

          • +1

@Edamamme: It would be perfect for tiny house. Load Spotify or similar and they do come with remotes. Use approved 240 to 12volt power supply and don’t have the worry of approval for mains connected. Make hole double din size so if blows up just go get another stereo. Bloody big range to choose from. Put 12 volt connection near a power point so power supply don’t installed internal

        • Any suggestions which to purchase at a budget, lets say $50 to $150, maybe you have a favourite,..

  • Anyone share some everyday use cases they use this (or similar things) for?

    Hi,

I have had two of these devices since release and they haven't turned out to be that great.
If you enable adb and sideload apps then you can't run new updates and miss out on using the default software.
One device I sideloaded homeassistant app which works but i think there are better options.
There other device I run the default software but this still needs more work - see below for good summary.

    • Sorry I meant they "turned out to be not that great"!

    • Can one just switch off adb after using it and it will start allowing updates again?

  • personally i think you are better off buying a cheap tablet and using that.
The lenovo tablet deals where people were getting some decent tablets for $100-$200 would be amazing.

I'm using 1 of those tablets and i've got it on a nice stand on the coffee tablet with wireless charging.

Works great, looks like it's part of the furniture, and if i really want to i can pick it up and move it.
