RTX 3050 at 40w? I have an RTX 3050 laptop for work with a 95W in it and its not awful but its a bit lacklustre, I can imagine 40w to be a bit depressing.

Still, could be worse for $800.

      No need to imagine.

      For $809, it's pretty good.

Bit better than I expected to be honest, fair deal!

      • They all look like the same game after a while…

isn't someone mentioned that MSI laptops hinges are sh|t and will break easy?

    • +9

I've seen hinges from all sorts of companies go floppy. The best advice for hinges I've seen is just be gentle opening them - take 2s instead of just flipping them open quickly.

    • yes. there is currently a class action lawsuit on this matter. msi laptops are the worst of the worst. of course the price is here, but its definitely a step below everyone else

      • How does MSI stack with Gigabyte?

        • depends on which gigabyte you are looking at. The aorus/aero line is fine and still is fine-not the most amazing but also pretty decent, middle of pack designs throughout the years.

But the gigabyte gaming is where the build fells short as these are older clevo designs. With that said I havent had any issue with any of my older metabox (clevo rigs) and I dare say as far as hinges are concerned, its no worse than msi

    • My friend bought an MSI laptop about 3 years ago and the trackpad buttons fell out after about 2 weeks and they fixed it once and it did it again within a month. The silicon was good but the plastic was awful.

  • Windows 11 is going to eat up a good chunk of that 8GB of ram.

    • +3

An additional 8gb ddr4 3200 sodimm is basically mandatory.

    • +3

8gb is fine for every day use but you should get an extra 8 if gaming

Buying this for everyday use is like buying your Grandma a Supra to do her grocery shopping.

        • +6

What's the retail on one of those?

          • +7

@And0r: More than what you can afford, pal!

            • @itsmoe: It's a Ferrari

or well in this case a Supra.. which is messing up the quote..

              • +1

@Jeaso: Supras are becoming more expensive than Ferraris đŸ˜‚

          • -3

@And0r: This needs to be pinned to the OzB homepage.

            • @HomebrewFC: Hi Captain. Just watch fast and furious to make sense of my comment and all the one afterwards……..calm down

          • +1

            @And0r: Grandma or Supra?

            • +1

              @bdl: why not both ¯_(ăƒ„)_/¯

  • What if my credit limit on Afterpay is $600 ? Am I still able to benefit from that deal ? cheers

Usually afterpay will just make your first payment the extra amount on top

Just be aware that the dated design may have longevitiy issues associated with the hinge and build quality

    • +1

      Thanks. This saved me grief.

  • Looking at a similar model, would this be any good? https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/beaconsfield/laptops/15-inch…

    • Considerably older, doesn't officially support W11. Battery would be absolutely shot as well.

    • +1

I sold a laptop pretty similar to that for $400 2 years ago. I replaced it with something better than for $600 around the same time. $700 is a joke

  • price is brilliant…

  • I bought this for 1100 a few months ago. I'm generally happy with it. It's a good cpu. Gpu could be better but i added a 8g ram and it's decent for gaming. The only complaint is it can get hot and lose performance after a few hours gaming. But I generally just use it as my streaming pc

    • Hinge OK? Looking at the video above, looks like the Dell hinge designs from 20+ yr ago

      • +1

It actually works ok but you can tell it will fail at some point.

      • Mine is ok, I can't see anything worrisome But I have it for a few months not sure about the future.

  • After being spoilt on a 100% sRGB 300nits 144hz screen I could not imagine going back to lower end 250nits screens.

Having said that this is probably the best bang for buck entry level gaming laptop at the moment…

  • What are the speakers like on these, relative to other laptops? The MSI description mentions 'High-Res audio', which is suspiciously vague.

    • +1

'high res' on a gaming laptop = they make sounds and you can hear it.

not a problem to this lappy, just that speakers on gaming laptops sucks in general. my laptop have a 'best in gaming laptop' 6 speaker setup and its so far behind a xps/macbook pro its not even funny.

the money saved if you buy this lappy can go towards a headset, even a 50$ razer kraken sounds like audiophile level compared to gaming laptop speakers

  • No touch screen? Does anyone know a similar with touchscreen? Thanks

    • +1

It's $800 entry level, laptop, not $1800, you can't get one of BBA for this price range.

  • So what's a good laptop around this price with identical specs?

    • +1

      Negatively available

    • This is pretty rare. Get it while you still can.
