Description:
Trump (or a Trumpist) could well win the 2024 US presidential election, and if he does, American democracy as we have known it will probably come to an end. Australia's best-informed commentator on US politics sends a chilling warning about the implications for Australia.

What if Trump (or a Trump-like candidate) becomes US president in 2024?

Leading expert and US and Australian politics insider Bruce Wolpe reveals the many ways in which Australia was damaged by Donald Trump's presidency. Seeping into Australia from above and below, Trumpism contaminated public debate, emboldened local political and religious extremists, diminished Australia's economy and international relations-and much more.

Wolpe predicts America's democracy won't survive a second Trump term. The implications for the world and for Australia are shocking. He explains how Australia can draw on its strengths to protect its democracy, economy and society from Trumpism, and where Australia is vulnerable and needs to build guardrails. He warns Australia might also face an existential question about ties with its most important ally.

'True, timely and terrifying' -Sean Kelly, author of The Game

'A timely warning and a potential survival guide' -John Barron, co-host ofPlanet America

'A forensic analysis of how President Donald Trump invaded Australia's politics and prospects' -Laura Tingle, ABC TV

'A must read for anyone who cares about Australian democracy' -Zoe Daniel, Independent MP for Goldstein

'This is a book you should read' - Natalie Barr, co-host of Sunrise

Should I buy 10 and use them as fire starter?

    • +29

      Could do!
I hear book burning is possibly back on the agenda in places like Florida.

        • +20

You realize the books didn’t actually contain pornography right? It was just the label the right wing nutters put on the books to fight a cultural war.

If only the rabid right in the US spent the same effort on gun control measures that prevent kids being shot in schools as cancelling books.

          • +1

@donkcat: Have you read the graphic novels? Do a quick google search but don't do it at work you don't want to lose your job.

            • +12

@nickm: Here is the thing, pretty much all the examples to books of that nature weren't actually in school libraries, all those sexually explicit books republicans used didn't come from school libraries. The law didn't actually ban individual books, it just gave parents the right to have books banned from school libraries. Also there is a huge difference between books been read to students in primary school and books been available to read for high school students in a library (republicans tried to argue the former was happening when really it was the latter that was occurring).

This is the issue with censorship, you have these conservative parent groups that had books like Nem Fox's Guess What? being banned for pornography because of this image here https://10play.com.au/ip/s3/2023/05/17/03c3477838975399a5eb1…
and they could do this because it's so subjective (by design) that books that don't contain nudity but rather culturally diverse themes can be banned. It's something you would expect out of a communist state but it's happening in good old USA.

              • +1

@donkcat: All of this over books in a library while hardcore porn of all persuasions is what's REALLY teaching kids about sexuality.

You really gotta wonder why it's all about libraries and not online porn. Almost like there's an ulterior motive here…

Absolute chuds. Critical gender theory has zero critical thought involved.

            • @nickm: Not yet. For example?

        • +18

Libs? You’re right, people that vote LNP need to piss off.

Reciprocal action in one Utah school district is the banning of the Bible in grade schools, due to its extensive depictions of violence, slavery and sex.

That's the trouble with censorship, it cuts both ways. Better to keep reading choices in the hands of parents, not governments.

          https://www.smh.com.au/world/north-america/bible-banned-from…

      • Along with books from Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl and more.

    • I wouldn't. The world is going to end according to this clown but there are cheaper and more environmentally friendly forms of paper. Recycling used books better. Maybe an old Kevin Rudd or John Howard bio, perhaps one of the several thousand written about Gough.

The irony of believing people who though Australian state government mandates actually are a good thing, then crying about "democracy" and fanaticism.

How the "bin fire" working out for the US right now ?

          • +2

@seamonkey: You weren't specific about which "bin fire" you were talking about

  • +27

I'm sure the book will be very balanced and nonpartisan. Just kidding…..

    • +11

They are just using the same Democrat propaganda to push through more media controls and reduce personal freedoms. And the Australian media is all ready to play dead.

    • +4

So he worked for the Dems, Julia Gillard and worked at Fairfax? Seems balanced to me.

      • +7

You mean the dude who voted Democrat most of his life ? And the one person who actually belives in REAL free speech ? That guy ?

          • +7

@seamonkey: There’s a pattern arising of you never responding to the point but always only replying with vaguery and smartarsery.
Btw if you don’t have anything of substance to add or contribute, just maybe not say anything?
            Crazy, right?

              • +8

                @seamonkey:

                that I don't give a flying f&#&

I mean you do care enough to have replied to me and others here when literally no one was even directly talking to you but sure, feel free to use the ‘I don’t care’ teenager tactic to weasel out of this one too.
                Cool Cool 👍🏻

    • You're absolutely right but nobody is reading this to change ideological perspectives. It's catnip for partisan hacks. Happens on both sides. Grist for the mill.

  • +23

$26.25 for yet another BS book written by an author who is on the US Democrats payroll…
    What a bargain…
Are there really some people who would want to pay for it?

    • +14

If there are people who idolise the Kardashians, then there are always people who would pay for such things

  • +13

    Political BS

  • +9

Unless they pay me to read this book , how is this even a bargain ?

    • +18

It used to cost $35 and now costs $26
      So technically, it’s a bargain

No book is meant for everyone, you might not like it but some others might. It’s like any other ‘deal’ on this forum.

      • +2

Do you believe this book is worth $26 + the time to read it?

I get this book isn’t for everyone , but this really sounds like a shxt deal

        • +8

Do you believe this book is worth $26

I think it’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
My feelings about it are merely subjective tbh.

If Trump is elected, American democracy will end and Australia should consider cutting ties with the US entirely - the author doesn't sound deranged at all.

    • +1

About as deranged as Trump himself.

    • +1

i mean tbf trump did try very hard on that point

jan 6 anyone? and lets not get into the regular election irregularites

    • If Trump is elected, American democracy will end and Australia should consider cutting ties with the US entirely

You say that, but Biden has done more in 2yrs to break apart the country than the entirety of the Trump presidency.

      • closer now to ww3 then ever before
      • inflation is Bananas
      • the country is being flooded (and that's be polite) with illegal immigration that supports trafficking
      • spending is at ridiculous Levels
      • Afganistans was a new level of incompetency

All the things you feared a trump presidency would bring has been done under Biden and worse.. how is it that you have failed to see this?

      • +2

I saw Jan 6, including the 5 years that lead-up to it.

It couldn't be any more fearful than that.

        • -2

          You saw??

How?? The footage was only released not long ago.

Are you talking about whats on the news?

  • +23

Trump is trash, but I’m not interested in some Obama era neoliberal loser telling me that - this kind of dumbass is the exact reason a ‘Trump’ exists in the first place.

Things keep getting worse for working people. Wow, huge surprise those same people will vote for someone that allows them to give the finger to the establishment.

Just let the culture war garbage continue. Keep idiots (both conservatives and liberals) distracted with ‘woke’ stuff pushed by massive corporations that don’t pay enough tax and destroy the environment.

  • +1

If Lee Harvey Oswald was around today he'd place this book on the floor in the vicinity of Joe Biden.

Hmmm, seems like there’s only one certain group of people that attempts all the censorship efforts around here and they all just seem to go easy on this one, probably coz they happen to agree with this one..

(I hope they don’t start reporting it now just to prove me wrong lol)

    • +1

I don’t care for either, I read a few comments and move on.

  • Utter tripe

  • +4

While I hate inflammatory politics, when trump won America did not crumble, and if he wins again America will not crumble. America and what they stand for is bigger than Trump.

    • +7

What is your level of confidence it could withstand another January 6?

      • +4

I'm sure they'll be able to fix a few broken windows again.

        • -1

Sort of disrespectful to those that actually lost their lives on that day

          • +4

@beatsntoons: Only person who lost their lives on the day was an unarmed protester shot dead by a security official.

          • @beatsntoons: And you wonder why no one takes you lost seriously?

Hahhaha, no one died that day. Biden lies, media lies and the libs come and regurgitate that same tripe.
One officer that was working on the day, died after a week or something due to a pre existing medical condition.
Biden - Police officers died on Jan 6 🤦🏻‍♂️

            • -2

@Gervais fanboy: Presume you mean “lot” not “lost” but what lot is that? Curious what your take is of my “lot” on the back of one comment.

This is sadly where the world is. Attacking each other and you know nothing about me.

              • +2

                @beatsntoons:

                mean “lot” not “lost”

                Thanks for the spell check

what your take is of my “lot

And I thought you’d never ask.
The ‘lot’ that only listens to one source of information coz it helps them to reinforce their own biases and then does one better by spreading that same ‘disinformation’ so confidently publicly.
Now Ofcos, you could have been a man of virtue that deeply cares about the truth but was unfortunately just misled on this one solitary issue. That happens too..
But you’ve just proven that you are not that person coz you just replied to me cribbing over semantics rather than the falsehood that you just shared above.
If you really cared, you would have discussed the subject and not sneakily digress from it. A ‘man of virtue’ would have just apologised for lying about something soo serious.

                So I say ‘you lot’

          • +1

@beatsntoons: Who died besides one protestor?

          • +1

@beatsntoons: You are parroting proven lies? C'mon man!

          • @beatsntoons: I walked through blood and bone on the streets of Washington DC that day, hoping to find my brother. Turns out he was in northern Canada

        • I'm sure they'll be able to fix a few broken windows again.

Try tell that to bat crazy AOC 🤣 makes up a story about fearing for her life 1hr before the beach even happened.

      • +1

If you believe in J6 was a proper insurrection have I got a bridge to sell you. You see the videos of cops literally opening the doors and letting people in on tours right? Funny how the media doesnt show those

        • The "media" being the lying hypocrite Tucker Carlson I guess.

Perhaps you could sell your bridge to the guy who just got 18 years, or the 450+ who have been convicted, and many jailed.

Or even the 500+ yet to be adjudicated.

          • +2

@jackspratt: Serves them right to be jailed. They did break the law by entering the capitol. But they were let in. They didn’t storm the gates like the media makes you believe. The doors were opened and they chose to break the law. It was all orchestrated.

            • @Spets: So the ones smashing the exterior windows, and scaling the walls - I couldn't see any "escorts" in that footage.

Were they there for the Day Tour?

Open your eyes ….. and your mind.

              • +3

@jackspratt: Who opened the magnetic locked front doors for them? Who let them in past barricades? It wasn’t some locust swarm of far right terrorists like they make you believe. Notice how there’s no cohesive footage just 10-30 second snippets.

          • +3

@jackspratt: Wow. You've got it bad.

            • @thurston4pm:

              Wow. You've got it bad.

Well, that vacuous comment advanced the discussion a fair way.

        • +3

Don’t you love how the media and everyone else was painting Qanon Sharman as the face of the insurrection. Then when video footage was released showing he was basically being escorted by a couple of Capital police officers, he was soon after released from prison.

Too many people trust the news.

        • +2

and the militias going in in military file ? and the ones who stored masses of weaponry across the river for when it went tits up ?
yea thats right, the ones that have just been sentenced to 18 and 12 years in pokey. No insurrection ? save it

      • Why would there be another January 6? Trump can't run for a third term so if we wins another term he'll be doing victory laps for 4 years and rubbing in people's places. He won't give a**** who wins after that.

If he loses again the democrats will be in the Whitehouse to kick protesters butts. Republicans will turn on him.

Let hope Trump loses and is never seen again but if he wins America with keep rolling on despite the TDS hysteria.

        • +1

It could happen if he loses in 2024 again, and doesn't accept it again. Literally the exact same set of circumstances as in 2020.
The simple fact that Democrats have the incumbent President won't stop it

          • @blackfrancis75: Really? You think Democrat won't call in the national guard as a precaution given Jan 6. You don't think Jan 6 idiots going to jail will deter them?

  • +1

What Bob said below, and this is democratic propaganda
