CommBank Low Fee Credit Card: $250 Cashback with $1000 Spend within 90 Days, $0 1st Year Fee (Save $29), New Cardholder

1630

Looks like Commbank has rearranged their credit card line up. They've canned the Low Fee Gold and now offer just the Low Fee card. This time last year the card was $300 cashback for $1500 spend (20%). Now it's $250 for $1000 spend (25%).

  • $0 annual fee for the first year and every subsequent year if you spend at least $1,000 in the previous year
  • changing to $0 monthly fee when you spend $300 per month from 25 August 2023

Offer available on new Low Fee credit cards applied for between 3 Jun 2023 and 30 Sep 2023. Offer not available on all other card types, existing cards, and switches from other card types and is not available to customers who currently hold, or have held, any activated Low Fee or Low Rate card types in the 12 months prior as a primary cardholder.

To be eligible for the $250 cashback on a new Low Fee card, you need to spend at least $1,000 on purchases (not including balance transfers and cash advances) using your new card within 90 days of activation. Cashback will be credited within 90 days of you meeting the spend criteria and will appear on your statement as ‘CASHBACK $250’.

I got the low fee one 2 weeks ago and it was $200 cash back so looks like they’re giving an extra $50 now. Damn I missed out.

    • +7

      Looks like you got Spriggy'd.

      • Just got my $200 Cashback. $250 would have been better but still can’t complain about free money.

  • Seems like an easy way to make a one-off $250, though I can't see how long the account must remain open…?

    • +2

      @chrism238

"Cashback will be credited within 90 days of you meeting the spend criteria and will appear on your statement as ‘CASHBACK $250’."

So you have 3 months to spend $1000, then you'd receive cash back within 3 months. So at worst 6 months.

      • +2

Last time I did a cashback with commbank they gave me the cashback shortly after I had paid my first statement.

    • +2

      @ chrism238
Close as soon you get cashback. No need keep it open unless you want to use as your daily card.

      • Thanks; my thoughts too.

  • do you need to have a commbank savings account in order to receive the cashback?

    • +6

I doubt it. The cashback is a credit on your cc statement.

    • +3

The application process may be painful if one has not any existing account with CBA.

      • +3

        This.

In addition to the 3 months payslips, you may be asked to send last year tax summary, bank statements.

        • Should get free tax advice from Clayton Utz

  • Does "purchases" include bill payments?

    • For all of their previous cashbacks yes. The only things that are excluded generally (as I have not looked specifically this time) is gambling purchases

      • +1

so ATO tax payment is included?

  • Do you get commbank rewards with this card?

    • -1

      no

      • +1

Rewards and Awards, two different things.

    • Yes, not CBA Awards.

    • +7

I learnt a lot by pressing that "Go to Deal" button.

    • +1

      No

  • I do not see the cashback offer when trying to apply for it in netbank does that mean I'm not eligible for the $250 cashback?

    • I do see it just under the Card bold heading
Enjoy $250 cashback to spend how you want. Apply for a new Low Fee credit card by 30 September 2023 and spend $1,000 on purchases within 90 days of card activation.

      • guess doesn't apply to me. I have claimed this years ago maybe that's why.

Can see any of the "offer" when applying for low fee credit card. Nothing at all about $250 cashback

  • +6

I've never had a credit card

I need to spent about $1500 on ebay, could i spend it on the credit card, and pay the $1500 back within 55 days and pay $0 interest, wait up to 90 days for the $250 credit, spend the $250 then close account without having even $1 in interest or fees?

I did read the terms etc but got a bit confused

Does applying for a card for a promo and then subsequently cancelling it affect credit score?

    • +6

      Technically yes but meaningfully no.
My score went from 924 to 850 last credit card I applied for but it’s already going back up again and I haven’t even closed that card. Usually back to where it was in 3-6 months for me.

    • +2

As long as you have a strong credit history, then it shouldn’t matter. Within the last three months, I’ve closed two credit cards and opened two credit cards, plus had a credit check done for a refinancing of my mortgage and two utility company credit checks. All in all, across all three credit agencies, I only went down ~10-20 points, and I’m somehow already making it up. Equifax and Experian still rate me around 870, whereas Illion have me at 720. I do have a strong credit history, so as long as you maintain that, then you can get away with almost anything.

      • what's the best (and cheapest) way to check my credit score?

        • +2

I use My Equifax, Get Credit Score (which uses Equifax, I belive), Credit Savvy, and ClearScore. By using these (or as least the last three), you’ll cover Equifax, Illion, and Experian.

      • If you have a strong credit history, that's low score, mine is in high 900 and I only have 1 credit card. but if the churning is worth it, it's worth it

      • Anyone know if you should apply for 2 different credit cards (different banks) at the same time?

More easily rejected by both banks? Impact credit score?

Or best to wait for approval by 1 bank then apply for the 2nd one straight after?

        • I think it's better to apply for both at once because I don't think the first one will show up on your credit statement instantly, and the second bank won't know about it. Since it isn't actually opened yet, when the second one asks how much existing credit you have, you can get away without mentioning it.

That being said, I currently have 5 active cards. One I've had for years, one opened 3 months ago, two opened a month ago and one opened last week. My rating dropped by only 5 points when I opened the most recent one.

          • -1

            @puffinfresh: Thanks for sharing!
It's good to hear about other people's experiences.

Last year my Rating dropped by a substantial several hundred points. Due to too many applications & enquiries in a short 6 month period. Possibly also due to closing cards as soon as I received the Cashback & Reward Points.

From readings, it's advised to keep several cards open with <20% owing per card limit (shows you can handle spending and pay off credit owing) to improve Rating.

You could be right in saying that you can get away with 2 applications same time (Pending approval not yet showing on Credit File)
Or both Enquiries could b e instantly showing on File for both Banks to view (and rejecting based on that)

Trying to find the best churning balance :)

  • I have a mastercard gold with CBA from when i had a mortgage with them which i barely use, is it relatively easy to apply for this?

  • Anyone know how recent you need payslips from? Casual employee been overseas for the last 4-5 weeks so no more recent pay slips

    Thanks

    • +3

Going through the same thing as a contractor and was asked to provide contract to show my pay and employment. Might be best to hold off and wait until you get a couple of pay slips to apply

      • Thanks, saved my time

  • damn, the $300 was better for me since I spend well over $1500 anyway

  • +1

Any suggestions for a good Credit Card with monthly spend averaging 3-4k a month? Currently with Woolworths Money however it's getting shut down and I'm looking around for an alternative.

    • +1

You’re better off churning them. Get one, make the minimum spend, close it.

    • American Express Discovery, no annual fee, qantas FF points

    • Is Woolworths money the same as the Everyday Pay thing?

    • Pick a points scheme (Flybuys, Velocity, Qantas, Woolies, etc) and start churning cards every 4-6 months. You get a lot more with the sign up bonus than by staying loyal. Visit www.pointhacks.com.au for a start.

  • What does last 12 months mean really? From date of signup, approval, or last closure? I am guessing closure, so I cannot apply until 12 months have passed since closure.

  • Is there a case they refuse u cause u seem to spend too little in your application?

And soft credit enquiries for cc application bad for your score?

    • +1

Every cc application I’ve seen does that through form validation. If it thinks your expenditure is too low, it just prompts you to check it again. So just keep bumping it up until it accepts it.

  • Anyone else getting "We're unable to find the page you were looking for due to a technical problem" when trying to apply as a New Customer? Tried their 'apply for a transaction account as new customer' link and that worked. Wondered if they are blocking new customer credit card apps on purpose.

  • What’s the real catch here ?

    • +8

That they lure people in who shouldn't have a credit card and make money from them.

  • +1

These cards are slightly worse now. They've changed the TOS and will charge $3/month account fee from August if you don't spend $300/month.

    • +3

Not till late august, by which I’ve likely already churned through this

  • No travel insurance

  • I already have a different Commbank credit card. If I apply for this card, instead of switching (switches are excluded from offer), will I qualify for the cashback?

    • not available to customers who currently hold, or have held, any activated Low Fee or Low Rate card types in the 12 months prior as a primary cardholder.

Any of those cards mentioned above?

  • -1

I had Commbank low fee GOLD credit card a couple of months back. Am I eligible for the $250 cashback with this card?

    • +2

Definitely not… This would be double dipping..!

  • +2

    This deal…..
    $250 cashback
    3% international transaction fees apply
    You won’t earn Awards points
    International travel insurance isn’t included
Higher purchase interest rates than our Low Rate credit card. May not be suitable if you only make minimum repayments over a prolonged period of time

    Previous deal…
    $300 cashback
    Nil International transaction fee
    Free Travel insurance

    • -1

It was a different (and better) card- the Low Fee Gold Card, which has been discontinued 1 June 2023.

  • Thanks for sharing OP

Rolled the dice, If I get rejected, then probably cannot do anything

hopefully no rejection, needed a new CC anyway been so long since last CC with Citi

  • I'm getting 'Something went wrong' every time I try and sign up for this. Anyone else?

    • Try Inprivate window?

  • I'm new to churning.

QUESTION 1: What are some useful things to spend $1000 or the qualifying amount on with these kinds of deals?

I was planning on buying $1000 of Woolworths gift cards for ….. buying lollies and ice cream. 😉 (j/k)

RACT give a 4% discount on Woolies cards which I've been doing for a while using my current credit card. (If I save $4 per $100, that's like an open offer to buy more confectionary items right?)

QUESTION 2: If you spend $1000, and pay it off within the billing period (Assuming 54 days) then how would they give you $250 back? Would your credit card become a debit card with a negative balance? 🤔

    • +3

      1) Gift cards are usually people bought to meet the spending requirements. I'm also pay in advance for ultilities, health insurance.

      2) Pretty much like that. They'll credit into your cc and you just have to use your card as normal until clear that amount (balance back to 0). Don't withdraw cash from it else you'll hit with cash advance fees.

      • +1

Advance payment for utilities ! brilliant. I wouldn't have thought about that one. Thanks mate !

    • QUESTION 1: What are some useful things to spend $1000

Best is to spend money on stuff that your were already going to spend Money at

QUESTION 2: If you spend $1000, and pay it off within the billing period (Assuming 54 days) then how would they give you $250 back? Would your credit card become a debit card with a negative balance? 🤔

Dont ever think your billing period will BE EXACTLY 54 days, its usually less than that- that's just how CC works. Would your credit card become a debit card with a negative balance? 🤔-
Credit card does not become debit card, It just will have account in credit (aka you can spend $250 on another multiple mastercard transactions using your credit card, or better of offset your existing transactions if you had been using it for daily for 2 months or more). Being in credit DOES NOT MEAN YOUR ACCOUNT IS IN NEGATIVE BALANCE, it means your available Credit limit is going to be higher.

  • does it approve instantly?

    • +1

      Nope

    • So far I personally have never had a single card approve automatically, only reject automatically though. Although I know one person who had Amex approve automatically (their first CC)

    • Mine is on the way though, about 2 days later

  • Am i eligible if im currently holding Low Fee Gold ?

  • I was conditionally approved last Tuesday and uploaded my payslips. I haven’t heard anything since.

    • Havent heard anything either, got approved, uploaded docs but it's all gone quiet. I've followed up a few times and everyone assures me its ok but seems like its going nowhere.

      • +2

        I received my card yesterday.

        • Sweet. Hopefully mine arrives today.

  • Anyone received the card yet?

    • +1

      Received yesterday

    • +1

      I received mine yesterday

    • Made a call to them, bank said they have issues in issuing new cards (not issues in approving applications).
Probably a lot of people applying caused a backlog of new cards demand to be issued.

Although combank might approve application, but it wont send the approved email until new card has been issued and sent out. Might be same case with ya.

  • Hi all, new to churning and also first time user with CommBank. Received my card 1 week after approval and have some questions (and probably stupid ones too, sorry!):

    • How do I pay off the credit card transactions once I make them?

    • Can I pay off my credit with an external account or do I need to open up a CommBank specific bank account?

Note: as I’m a new user, in my CommBank app I only have the credit card account so far.

    Thanks in advance!

    • +3

When you get your first statement (usually via email or in app notification for some banks), it will show the payment options. Easiest is BPAY. You can use any bank for that.

      • Oh sweet thats very convenient, thank you!

        • +2

You can test Bpay into your CC account from your debit/saving acc.

Biller code: 1818 - look it up or call Commbank.
          Ref no: your cc number.

Test with smallest amount that your bank allow. I'm usually do with 5 cents - some bank allowed only $1 minimum.

I'm always done this after got my cc number so that the payee is verified and saved. Easier to pay later when the statement arrived.

    • +1

How do I pay off the credit card transactions once I make them?

      • Bpay as suggested earlier, Not sure what biller code is (its same code for all Combank CC's, reference no is your card no.) - This doesn't need a Combank account. Since biller code reflects its a CC account you cannot use Credit accounts to pay into it I think.

      • Open a bank account with Combank and transfer from that account to the CC account (This new combank account can be their like everyday account for which they charge monthly fee for (unless you are a student/ under a age/ or pay $X in that account monthly - only need to pay and then can withdraw back too), or a savings account presumably that should have $0 monthly charge, or there's another secret bank account you can open that has $0 monthly charge)
All combank accounts should technically work with instant OSKO payment system i think (from like major banks that support OSKO OUTGOING)

  • +2

Upcoming change to Low Fee: $0 annual fee in the first year and subsequent years when you spend $1,000 (changing to $0 monthly fee when you spend $300 per month = $3600 per year from 25 August 2023, standard $3 per month = $36 annual fee).

    • +2

Pretty irrelevant I'd say, everyone on Ozb would have closed their account by then haha :)
