  For anyone with Home Assistant, v2 of the monitor light bar can be controlled (eg turning on and off and changing light temperature based on time of day, with adaptive lighting).

  That being said, this model is cheap at this price.

  Are these monitor lights just a replacement for a desk lamp/having the room lighting on? Still confused as to why they're popular.

    Pretty much, I was skeptical too until I started using an old one that I had. It basically lights up your desk and provides ambient lighting behind the bar as the one I'm using has a colored bar that lights up behind the screen, similar to those light strips that you see frequently.

    It's reasonably good, I find myself using it all the time now. I'm not sure if my eyes strain less or not, though I have become accustomed to using it. Mine's powered by USB so I use the passthrough from the monitor. Don't have to turn any lights on if I need them.
