  • Can anyone confirm that opal card transaction is eligible for cashback.
Looking to use it for default transport card = )

    • +3

I can confirm. Was in Sydney recently and I used my HSBC via Apple wallet to tap on and off on the trains

    • yea it works. whether you are topping up or tapping on/off

    • The T&C's state that theres no cashback on government, transport, vending machines, parking etc.
100% fine to topup at coles/worth and get the 2% cashback (but better to get ~4% giftcard discounts!)
I've topped up at train stations using the automated machines and NOT got cashback, but I've topped up at the same looking machines at ferry stops and have been given the cashback - so it does seem to depend.
Also - if you look back at all previous times this offer has been posted - you will see that you only get cashback on tap and go processed through the VISA network (including apple/google pay wallets). Some stores - Coles, Shell Coles Express, Kmart automatically route all tap payments through eftpos so you do NOT get cashback. If you look back you will also see that there are a roughly equal number of people saying that they do get it at coles group stores to those saying that they don't - so it would appear that some stores haven't had the IT updates to default to eftpos - or people are actually not tapping the card like they say and are using their watch or phone to pay with apple/google pay which DOES always get cashback as their systems can't overide your choice on apple/google pay and put it through eftpos unless you click eftpos on your phone.
HSBC are very clear it is only VISA paywave, Apple and Google Pay that get the cashback all over their site. You don't get cashback if you tap your card and it goes through eftpos.

The ferry MCC code was categorised as not a government service?

        • Yeah I have no idea how or why sometimes you get it and sometimes I don't. The machines look identical (the big style ones) so its got to be how they are set up or some are older or newer I guess - but the point is that you don't know until after and of course aren't supposed to get it anyway as they do say it excludes government and transport so its double excluded! Just like at coles theres no way to know if a shop is going to process it as visa or eftpos when you just tap. Its down to luck and if you are new then you need to monitor it closely to work out which regular shops you go to that don't give it to you.

As a rule of thumb, always use Apple Pay / Google Pay to thwart least cost routing. Coles is not the only merchant that uses LCR.
In fact, I don't even remember the last time I have actually used a physical card.

Thanks, I have a question maybe off topic,

When spending overseas this card and many other cards such as ING, Macquaire they all claim to have 0% International Transaction Fee.

Does it mean that there are no convertion/transaction fee at all? Or does this mean that the bank does has no fee, but the network such as Mastercard/Visa still charges a fee for convertion?

I'm trying to compare these debit cards which claims to have no overseas transaction fee to a Wise card, where wise charges a forieng convertion fee, but have a slightly better fx rate.

    Thanks.

Saved over $300 last year. This is my favourite card for all sub $100 purchases. Been using it for close to 3 years.

    • -2

When I pay for car service/rego check for each car, I get them to split the cost so each transaction is under $100 to get a little bit back on the cost, only around $6 or $7 savings on each car, but it all adds up and tax free.

  • +4

2% IMO better than most credit card offerings - definitely a keeper.
Will still use others (Macquarie, Citi) for international purchases or CC for online/larger tap and pay purchases.
Even though they say no FOREX fees/ATM fees, rate is always consistently 2% more expensive than the Visa/MC rate so basically a hidden 2% fee in there.
Also the app isn't the best as they show the 'statement date' for transactions not when you actually make the transactions making tracking very confusing. But still, 2% is 2% and money IMO is way better than points.

    • +2

      can't agree more
I use this HSBC card for everyday spending (under $100 / just split the payment) for in-store purchase
This also give me better feeling when merchant charge card fee (eg. 1.5%) which is still better off than paying cash

For international ATM cash out I used Citi Plus which has 0 fee and good rate

For international online purchase normally use Revolut (for weekdays) as they have 1% surcharges on weekends

      • What happens if you split at $100, then the merchant adds a fee. Do you just get 2% on the $100? Or do you get nothing since its over $100?

        • As long as fee is under 2% you're still winning. E.g. you can split a 150 dollar transaction into $90 and then $40 and earn 2% on both. Exactly $100 doesn't give you cashback. Needs to be under.

  • +6

oh, for the days of 5% cashback on ING and some Bankwest cc transactions. Still the HSBC 2% is better than nothing

    • Bankwest cc transactions.

      tell me more ?

      • +1

when we got our Bankwest cc they had a 5% cashback deal I think for utilities and maybe rates etc, can't remember, as it was years ago now, around the same time as the ING 5% cashback deal.

Lifetime savings of $1747.15 since it's inception 4yrs ago :)

Pretty happy with that and I am not a big spender by any means.

  • I guess the only killer is the slow transfer to and from HSBC account.

      • +1

        I tested this with CBA.

        CBA ——> HSBC - Instant
        HSBC ——>CBA - 2-3 Days

        • Did you use the app or via browser? Fast payments out only work via the app for now it seems.

          • @GS9891: I used the app.

This is the first transfer after I opened the account though.

            The app said this:

            Fast Pay Unavailable
It may take up to 2 business days from the payment date to process this payment.

We’ve had to update some of your details.

            • @notewar: Odd, CBA does support SCT-in so should be instant. Have you setup the 6-digit PIN on the app yet? I found it didn't work for me either till I did that last week (which sadly made my old physical token redundant).

        • For me its UBank———>HSBC - instant
HSBC———->UBank - by the end of the same day provided done in the morning, otherwise it's the very next day in the morning

I know the deal says it's for 'tap and pay', but has anyone tried doing under $100 payments to Zippay with their HSBC debit cards to trigger the 2% cashback?

    • +2

      no but let us know

    • Wanted to know as well so just tried, unfortunately no cashback, looks like it’s tap and pay only!

  • App is just garbage but I can endure that for the 2% lol

A few cons just for those who aren't aware of it:
    - Banking with HSBC requires two passwords, one to log in, another to make modifications. The second one binds to the device. You can only change it by talking to someone on the phone.
    - To change certain details, you must visit a branch. Depending on where you live, this might be very inconvenient. (Wouldn't know how many data breaches are coming our way, mine still has the old license number.)
    - The website seems to only work on Firefox. (I stopped trying a couple years ago, maybe this had been fixed.)
    - If you deposit cash above a certain amount, you will be questioned as to where the money came from lol (Maybe I just have the vibe of a money launderer)

So it is like dealing with MSY, you have to be ready to spend a bit of time and patients when things go wrong.

the login one can be done by biometric login (eg. Face ID), which is easy to use in day-to-day basis
For any transactions, in the app click "Generate security code" and it can also be validated by Face ID

      • The website seems to only work on Firefox.

not sure about your issue on the website, but never have issue running in Google Chrome

This has been introduced in the past couple years, and yes it made it easier, but does not negate the lengthy process of changing security devices. I had the luck of losing my phone and boy that was work.

Also, not everyone is in favour of biometric login.

not sure about your issue on the website, but never have issue running in Google Chrome

I'm glad it works for you.

It is just a matter of imposing unnecessary security on the consumer part to the point of crippling. I remember signing up to ING and couldn't believe how easy it was.

        • Never been questioned about depositing $6k last time. I was doing this to qualify for Premier status.

          • @nightelves: Do you know how long do we need to keep deposit and keep that amount in the account to qualify for premier status? I've deposit money into Global account for the last 2 months but I send money back to the other account right after that. Thank you

    • +1

Was it over 10k? Isn't that the level that anti laundering reporting kicks in?

      (Never mind, only for cash)

      • Huh that’s interesting, didn’t know it existed. I don’t remember the amount, only that it was strange I was questioned.

Their complaints department is great …. it took me 3 complaints before the account was created. System problems and human problems at their end for processing applications. After raising a complaint there was always contact the next day and another obstacle got removed.

Now that it is setup looks good - and appreciate having easy multi-currency capability. So far it looks not to need to send SMS - instead using security codes from within the phone app.

    • Wow - totally the opposite to my experience.
During their system meltdown last year when everything broke, after 6 months of still not getting my missing cashbacks I tried unsuccessfully several times to raise a complaint as their customer service staff could only tell me that the relevant team had just decided not to reply again every time so there was nothing they could do. They were unable to even lodge a complaint.
I went on their website and submitted their online complaints form to get an email back a few days later saying that they are unable to accept complaints through their official online complaints form!
Decided to just give up and stop using them mostly as it also kept not activating the cashback after my $2k deposit sometimes, and even if you do another 2k it still wouldn't trigger it so as it was all so unreliable I just felt best to not use it!

  • +1

Seems like a great way to offset tap and pay fees.

  • +2

Oh my, how many bank accounts do you guys have?!!!

    • +2

as many as we need lol

    • accounts w~10 different banks

    • About 7 different banks lol.

  • Since it is a debit card, what if you lost the card and someone picks it up and uses "Tap and Pay"? Can you dispute the transaction and get your money back?

    • +1

Yes, that works with all banks.

    • +3

Just use Apple Pay or an equivalent and keep the card in your drawer.

      • And add to your SO phone as well

    • +6

You still earn 2% on whatever they buy

      • But will he still earn it after disputing?

        • Its the one trick that HSBC doesnt want you to know

  • +1

    app suucks

    • They had a big update just last week. Supports PIN/fingerprint login now + NPP in/out at last, not too bad now I think.

  • +1

I used to be with HSBC but I changed after learning about their history.

They're really not a bad organisation, you just have to look look past their scandals such as money laundering, customer data loss, tax fraud, tax avoidance, Forex manipulation and fraud against customers, and so much more.

    • +7

Sounds like pretty much every large bank tbh

    • +1

When you're essentially one of the biggest banks in the world some scandals are probably unavoidable. I still daily them for this card though since I like money, and 2% is far higher than the usual 0.5%~ a CC rewards program provides back.

      • +1

Yes being a larger company you may expect a larger proportion of issues, but 1-2 controversies every 1-2 years seems relatively high.

        • Wonder what's coming in the next episode. 🧐

  • +3

Even with the benefits of $0 overseas ATM fee, these guys are completely useless.

My dad is stuck in HK Airport for the last 2 hours, with no HK dollars and a HSBC (AU) Global Debit Card that doesn't work at the HSBC HK ATM.

HSBC HK can't help since they can't see the account in a different country, and HSBC AU says it should just work without changing any settings.

    • Well that sucks, let us know the outcome.

      • +2

He eventually got a friend to come to pick him up. Will test other HSBC ATMs and other bank ATMs later.

    • Very odd, but does it work at any other ATM? Will just be the operator fee which isn't usually too bad in HK.

    • +6

HK is a very weird one, my Citi plus didn't work at any ATM's including Citi's own and none of my other cards worked either. Lucky I had to $50 aussie cash on me and managed to ring Rams and got their card working. But when I arrived in India all the cards worked there.

    • Always travel with multiple cards

  • They used to have a $100 account open bonus. wonder if that is still around

  • +1

westpac and boq not instant to hsbc

    • My BOQ transfers have always been instant to HSBC. BOQ only does fast payments if less than 1k though (to any external account, not just HSBC).

      • weird i tried $5 and it didn't, does with other banks though

      • +1

Is that legacy BOQ or myBOQ? The tech mess that is the two distinct platforms. myBOQ didn't go through instant for me.

    • +1

      Confirmed.

HSBC —> WBC = NOT Instant (Despite HSBC says it will be instant but that could be because it's a new Payee)
WBC —> HSBC = NOT instant (Online Payment)

HSBC —> BoM = SCT Instant
BoM —> HSBC = NOT Instant (Online Payment)

      • What's wbc

        • +1

WBC. ASX code for Westpac Banking Corporation.

  • +1

Support is shit. I had an inactive account from years ago so can't open a new account.
Tried calling them to get it back up and running but after doing what they told me to do, they told me to call back in a week?

  • +6

    The worse branch customer services…..

My wife couldn't print statement so go to branch and find out the system automatic change statement frequency to 6 months. Then they ask for $20 to print a record for her. Worse she complain again and telling them how bad the services level is, they say if ok, you don't like it you can leave us and go to other bank. Amazing.

  • I love this transaction account! It doesn't earn interest, but the 2% cashback I feel is better. I only transfer money into it the first day of every month (the required $2K to activate the 2% cashback), then I transfer it straight out again to my Ubank account so that I'm not missing out on high interest on the 2K. Then prior to making a transaction that is under $100, I quickly transfer what I need into my HSBC to cover that transaction, then I tap and go. It is important that you tap and not insert your card as this will disqualify you from the 2%. Also, another hack is if the amount is over $100, just do split payments ie multiple taps of $99 etc at the one retailer until the full amount is paid.

The only other thing you need to be mindful of is that you don't get cashback when paying bills at Service TAS (or Service NSW etc) or when paying bills at the post office. Someone, please correct me if this is no longer the case now, but I know it certainly used to be the case.

    • All this hassle for 2 dollars. You will get permanent anxiety .

      • It all adds up, it's not just $2, it's actually up to $50 per month. I've literally got hundreds of dollars cashback. I consider it worth the little bit of time to transfer each month.

    • You can always deposit more and become HSBC Premier customer.

Really I suggest for most people just to leave 500 to 1500 dollars in the account after reaching the minimum deposit. If the transaction is less than 100 use tap and pay. If its more than 100 use credit card.

At 5% interest to make it round numbers. 0.417% per month. Which is interest per month of 2.08 for $500 or 6.25 for $1500. If you tap and paid that amount it would be $10 for $500 (6+ taps) and $30 for $1500 (15+ taps).

As per HSBC last year I earned $177.16 in cash back.
