351

Greencross Vets is offering one free dental health checks for your cat and dog (one per pet). You have to call your local Greencross Vets clinic to check availability and book (cannot be booked online)

From the T&C:
The dental check is limited to checking your pet’s teeth, mouth and gums and it does not include a general physical examination of the rest of your pet. Pet dental check will be performed by a vet nurse.

Pretty good offer if you've never had your pet's teeth and gums checked, or concerned about bad mouth odour.

    • They might do that, too.

says a lot about the abject state of dental care in this country that a deal for pet dental checks for free piqued my interest cos i thought it might be for humans. Dental into medicare plz.

"This offer does not include any treatment"

it's the carrot to get you into the vets. then they can recommend the $$$$ treament

I did this last year, it is free so not surprised but they looked in my dogs mouth for a split second, said they’re pretty good but could use insert oral hygiene treat here. Was a bit of a waste of time.

    • +9

All it takes is a second for the vet to know if the teeth need a clean or extraction.

That's kind of like saying you went for a blood test, it took a split second, everything was fine, what a waste of time. It's only a waste of time because everything is fine. For those that catch a disease early, it could be a huge time (or life) saver.

If anything, this comment proves that they're not trying to shill unnecessary treatments, so I'd be glad.

Worth noting Greencross are corporate owned, not that many local vets are any better

    • Aren't some of them franchises?

Our dog got a free check too and then they told us $600 for cleaning the teeth for our dog. I never got more excited to brush my dogs teeth myself.

    • Haha me too! My cat had gingivitis (some pets are just prone to this). I ended up getting him water additives, toothbrush and toothpaste.

don't wanna risk brushing the teeth of my two German shepherds and losing an arm, so I feed them brisket bones or lamb necks to keep the tooth clean. Also give fresh food not dry (processed) food which are notorious for ruining teeth of pets.

This. Animals on their ancestral diet generally do not have health issues. If you are asked to brush their teeth, it just means you gotta feed your little ones bones. Feeding minced everything is not good for their teeth or gum, especially when they are still kittens/puppies.

If you care about your dog/cat but can't afford proper pet insurance, I recommend considering Green Cross Vet's Healthy Pets Plus as an alternative.

If you take up this deal and go for a Free Dental Check and are told you need a $600 dental clean, the Healthy Pets Plus subscription will give you $200 off that dental clean!

PS: Do take up this offer to find out if your dog needs a dental clean, even if you go elsewhere for the clean. If they need teeth taken out, that will be much more expensive and may be a big quality of life loss for a dog (depending how many teeth they lose).

How much is insurance normally? This one’s $45 a month, seems expensive.

      • +1

About the same for basic insurance, BUT insurance doesn't cover vaccinations, microchipping, consults + emergencies. Those are upfront costs worth hundreds of dollars that you'll need to pay even with the insurance. If I had this a few months ago, it would've paid for itself.

The insurance is probably only going to be worth it if you need treatment. If you're going for a consult, it's not worth the excess. Also, basic insurance usually tops out with something like $1,000 per claim, per treatment, per year.

A good idea is to bundle your pet insurance with your home + contents insurance. In my case, it only costs me ~$5/month(?) more to include 2 dogs with RACQ.

If you want serious pet insurance, it's going to cost much, much more (my friend pays >$2,000/year). I guess it's like Obamacare vs Private Health Insurance.

        • With my pet insurance i pay no excess and they cover 90% of all vet costs including check ups and vaccinations. I'm paying just under $70 a month (increased from last year by about $10) this entitles claims of up to $25,000pa
I made the decision before i adopted (my large) dog as I'm on a rather low income and if he were to develop a major illness i needed to be sure i could afford all it took to give him the best care possible.
I think the peace of mind is definitely worthwhile

It’s worth it if you have a pet who has chronic issues.
My vet has a similar annual plan but cheaper. I’m working on my cat’s allergies, we’ve had to visit the vet every month for antibiotics and steroid shots. It’s at least $90/consultation, plus I get free annual vaccination and vet product discounts. I no longer have to worry financially about taking my pets to the vet.

My dog had a free dental checkup at a PetStock Vet last year. So if Greencross isn't near you, check if PetStock are and if they are still doing it.

  • +3

Not sure how much value this is, if you are getting your pets vaccinated and health checked yearly.

The dental check is no more that a 30 second step.

  • +10

I don't think is this a bargain at all, but merely an advertisement to get people in the door. Most (if not?) all vets will do this for you anyway!

    • For a consultation fee?

    • +1

Dunno why you were downvoted, as you're right. Most vets will do a free dental inspection, won't be a consult and probably done by a nurse.

    • Yeah, not a deal.

    • +1

Greencross was one of the far more expensive ones compared to others when I needed to desex my kitty, even after the voucher (was about $200 or something ridiculous). The voucher is also what they use to get people in.

      Always phone around.

  • They want you on their books to market other services.

Wonder if they support triennial vaccination or recommend that you come in annually (I know kennel cough is annual but my dogs do not need it)?

  • Can I borrow someone's furry outfit? :(

    Screw dental pricing in Aus

  • +1

I've been called a dirty dog. Can I go?

    • If you like butts its a yes from me

  • Good if you don’t take your vet to annual check. Any decent vet will check at the least weight the pet and check their dental condition during annual check up, or during the vaccination appointment.

    • +2

Where can I get annual checks for my vet?
