FYI, this is a timed charger (not smart charger).

  • Got a +ve mainly for the FREE Shipping.
As Charger itself takes too long to charge… not sure if even have a timer? Got one but hardly use it to charge

    • Got a +ve mainly for the FREE Shipping.

DSE have free delivery on almost everything until Monday.

  • Yeah the charger kinda sucks but the batteries are great.

  • OK. Good (for the Free Delivery)
Note the above charger does not seem to have a timer (that 's why hardly use it at all)
Got one of the smart charger instead.

  • Which smart charger do you guys recommend to go with the batteries?

La Crosse Technology BC 700 or BC1000 should do as there have been many good deals from Amazon. (unless you need to charge more than 4 at at time)

  • Hi folks…. Just took a look at the La Crosse Technology BC 700. Currently $38 inc shipping, Amazon.

But I'm still struggling to understand, why should I fork out an extra $20 to get one?

Why not just get one of these cheap chargers, including 4 extra batteries? Why is the 13hr wait time an issue? Surely I can just put it on over night…?

Serious question. If someone can justify the extra $$$ I'll pay the $38 for the BC700.

      it's just depend on yourself…
I just cannot be bothered to remember to take those batteries out at certain time, and can charge my batteries anytime I feel like
eg if I charge them now , I need to take them out at 1-3 AM in the middle of the night?
The included charger need to be charged in Pair as well
you can also charger at many different rates with Smart charger or La crosse (ie quick, slower…)
there are also many other advantages….

So is it worth the extra $$? Just depend on you

    • the smart charger will treat your batteries better (won't overcharge them). this charger will overcharge them (at a low rate, so it won't damage them TOO badly…but will still overcharge) - this is not good for the life of the batteries.

so, batteries charged on a BC700 will live longer (you will get more use out of them). whether that outweighs the cost of the charger depends on how badly they are overcharged, and how many sets of batteries you go through.

      • thanks again. I'm not too worried about preserving battery life to be honest. Maybe they won't retain optimum life.. but that's not the end of the world.

At the moment I'm thinking, just get the bog standard. I do quite like the BC700 as a cool gadget but it's not exactly something I'll use every day.

        • when youre paying that much for eneloops, you'd want to make it a worthwhile long term investment.

spend the extra i think and it'll pay itself off in the long run

        • yeah, in that case, a more simple charger might be the way to go for you.

the smart charger i have (the eneloop 2 slot USB charger from DSE) is a good compromise, if you can find it on sale for $12.49 again…as long as you don't mind charging 2 at a time.

but if you want to charge 4 at a time, the charger in this deal should do the job ok (without damaging the batteries TOO much).

        • +2

          yeah, maybe.

But that's the kind of logic I'd apply to bigger investments, not really a pack of rechargeable batteries.

Bctransit and caprimulgus sum it up well below… but really, are there that many people out there who have 40 AA batteries in constant usage? I wouldn't have thought so.

The way I see it… the cheap charger is better for me.

One more point… I think that something that another factor is at play here. It's the "I want to have the best gadget" factor. You only have to look at some of the threads on torches. There are websites nowadays dedicated to torches. People obssess over the shape and the brightness. But at the end of the day….. it's just a stick with some light coming out the end.

Maybe it is all symptomatic of modern society. People need to step away from their pc's and internet connections. There are more important things in life, than worrying about the longevity of eneloops or the "throw" of the latest Cree LED.

        • +1

well, that's 40 AA batteries over the life of the charger, so not necessarily at the same time (could be 16 batteries that you replace over the years as they deteriorate)…but yeah, the point is: different strokes for different folks!

or you could get this from amazon for $50 posted : 1500 Super Power Pack with 12 AA, 4 AAA, 2 C & D Spacers, 4 Position Charger & Storage Case

Ive posted it on my blog http://savedollarz.blogspot.com.au/

    • Or you can wait for the COTD flash sale - $2 for 8X Eneloops :P

    • ^ i believe the charger in this set is the MQN06, which is a smart charger. would be a lot better than the MQN04 in the OP deal (but not quite as good as a la crosse or maha charger).

why spent extra $20 on the charger (and the charger makes no major difference) when you can buy 8 brand new batteries for $20? come on guys, just a $2.5 worth battery, no need to over-protected.

for example, the battery can last for 5 years by using smart charger, only 3-4 years by using the non-smart charger, considering you can get 8 brand new batteries - which means another 3-4 years life, which option is bargain?

    • well that depends how many batteries you go through (and how badly your cheap charger treats them).

ie. if you are only ever going to use one or two sets of 4 batteries, then yes, buying 2 extra sets of batteries will double or triple the life of your batteries.

but if you are going to use 10 sets of 4 batteries (remember, this is over the life of the charger), then 2 extra sets of batteries will only increase your battery life by 20% - overcharging batteries using a cheap charger may easily damage your battery life by more than that.

so really, it's entirely dependant on your usage, and how well your cheap charger treats your batteries.

      • you missed one point here: a smart charger might die sooner than the non-smart charger since it has more 'smart' components, any component failed, the charger failed

also how people will actually leave the batteries on the charger for more than 1 full day?

        • a smart charger might also last longer, due to better build quality. without anything to back it up you are making pure speculation.

leaving batteries on the charger is not the problem, it is the termination mechanism (or lack thereof). dumb chargers overcharge: that is a fact. in fact they are DESIGNED TO OVERCHARGE (at a low rate to minimise damage).

and yes, many people WILL leave batteries on longer than they are supposed to. you've never forgotten to take something out, or not been there at precisely the right moment? (let alone the fact that the right moment is, as above, completely unknown to you)

FYI: my smart charger is the eneloop USB one from DSE (which uses peak voltage termination, rather than deltaV) which was only $12.49 with two eneloops. (so no, it's not just confirmation bias for buying a more expensive charger)

    • agreed! buy 4 new batteries rather than a smart charger!

      • no, buy whatever suits you better!

    • Also depends on what devices you are using the batteries for.

As rechargeables don't recharge to the same mAh (depending on age/use etc) each time, having 2 batteries within a similar range will be best.
