  • They look a bit light on/cheap to me and I couldn’t find any reviews

My TNF GTX hikers I got off Amazon for $25 a few years ago are wearing out but they are a lot more substantial looking than these

    • +3

Anaconda seems to regularly have these weird Salomons for sale, that don't seem to exist anywhere else in the world and don't seem as good as regular models. They might be some factory seconds or something.

But they're not too bad. I have a pair of mid/high tops and they do pretty well. They'd be a terrible deal at "retail" but for under $100 they seem okay. They're a little thin and cheap feeling but I'm happy with them as an inexpensive hiking boot.
Then again, $25 North Faces would have been worth copping a few

  • Can confirm that these are great shoes. I took them on about 6 or 7 long hikes (5 - 7 days) and absolutely thrashed them and they still held together well. I chose them over ankle high boots since they are lighter. If you want full support go ankle boots. If you want something light these are great.

    • Are they slippery on metal grille or ice? My Merrell Moab surprisingly are quite slippery.

      • +1

I also found my moabs to be hopeless on any wet surface, so have been looking for something with good grip

        • It's the Vibram sole that is slippery on wet surfaces and rocks.

  • If I’m just going to the snow to basically be a toboggan chauffeur for kids, would hiking boots be sufficient?

    • +1

They'll eventually get wet depending on snow conditions - even the water resistant gore-tex models. Full leather boots can be waterproofed pretty well (using dubbin etc), but with synthetic you will almost certainly need to improve the moisture resistance by spraying with silicone. Wear woollen sock, pull your snow pants over the boot as far as possible, and make sure you have dry, warm shoes and socks to change into,

    • on packed snow, hiking boots would be just good enough. On soft snow, you are better off with a pair of waterproof snow boots to keep your feets dry and warm

  • Hopefully not as good as the XA Pro 3D GTX from last months sale?

Still spewwin' they cancelled my X.Raise 2 GTX's that I still reckon is the best lookin' hiking shoe to date with great reviews from the month before that.. 😪

  • 4 years warranty

  • How do you tie up the shoe lace on these. Looks like they are fixed?

    • It's just for show, the laces are tucked inside.

  • Is the sizing US or UK?

  • ugly as all get up…

  • Have to be a member to get that price.

  • Moab 2 (not 3) for $111-130 from amazon or this GoreTex Salomon?
Lots of people say GoreTex is too hot?

    • Neither for me. The Moab's are a better shoe but heavier. Suggest you try them on. All waterproof linings make your foot hotter, and GoreTex does not "breathe" in my experience.

Checked out the Ardent today at my local Anaconda. Cheaply made with lightweight uppers, weak lacing (no Quicklace at this price point), thin insoles and those reinforcing straps on the side are just painted on. They are made in India, where the cheap, B-grade Salomons seem to come from (I bought a pair of made-in-India Daintree boots that were also not up to the usual Salomon standard). The Ardent were comfortable enough and the soles sturdy but even at $99 I'd spend a little extra on the XA Pro or some other shoe.

    • I checked them out too and was thoroughly unimpressed. Feels like they should be $50 or less. Will wait for a good deal on a decent pair of Salmon GTX instead.

      • I bought the Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX for $125 (most sizes are still in stock):

      • All the brands make a cheapy basement priced shoe to deter you from buying off-brands and knockoffs.
