Before the nOt tHe 4k vErSiOn comments, as OP says, this would be good for someone with an older TV. For someone whose TV is HD and not UHD/4K anyway, it would be a great buy

Are you saying that the OP said this would be good for someone with an older TV?

That seems to be the gist of it

My TV is only 1080p but I’d still not touch this model. The 4K version has much better specs that benefit the experience beyond the resolution of the output.

    • Got one for the bedroom tv, no 4K needed there even if the tv was 4K.
Bought it at office works for $42 a month back.

    • -2

Is this the 4k version? If not, it's a no deal from me.

  • +2

Damn thought it was the 4k one

I could potentially use one of these at $39. but I don't want the HN gift card headache.

  • It's great if it doesn't stop responding and need the power cable pulled every time.

I've handled it by putting my smart power board there so I can turn the switch off and on through a phone app, but I'd prefer to have got something that didn't need this.

My oldest 4k one has the same isssue recently actually

It's great if it doesn't stop responding and need the power cable pulled every time.

      Sounds like a Google product.

  • Wish they had an offer on the 4k one at the same time

FireTV 4K Max is great and always on sale.

      • A better device IMO.

      • How’s the remote?

  • Also good for any new TV for access separation. Our TV apps are used for kids viewing/streaming, while adults use 4K version of this.
Very convenient, and also keeps kids away from unnecessary exposure of some of our logged in apps (unless they have access to physical remote or Mobile remote for this).

Would not buy even if free

    • +2

How do you buy something that's free of charge?

  • +12

Yeah but it's Harvey Norman. That guy stole my tax money.

  • I thought it was the 4k one when I scrolled down it said 4k on the HN description. Have to cancel now which will be a headache cause HN…

  • So you can use the gift card to reduce the price to $39?
Or do you have to buy at full price $59 and just get a $20 gift card for later (meaning the device isn’t $39)?

    • +1

      The 2nd one…

But you can buy a 2nd one with the 1st offer after you get the gift card from the 2nd one? Which is technically the 1st one?

I'm sure you can work out what you mean?

      • And return the first one then they remove $20 from the refund so you still pay $59.

        • -1

Return the $20 from the 2nd's gift card, so it's only $39 :D

  • I've had several Chromecasts over the years and was generally pretty happy with them, but the Google tv has been by far the worst experience. Kind of slow and clunky, currently suffers from audio sync delay issues with bleeps that go away if you fully factory reset it… Just very poor quality software more than anything… Or under powered CPU, or both! Avoid.

    • What do you use instead? I'm assuming apple TV?

      • I'm suffering 5hrough the Google tv dongle thingo experience… I've just done another factory reset to try and get ride of the horrible audio delay. But am thinking about either getting a new tv with google tv onboard or going the whole hog with NVIDIA shield pro..

  • Never got my giftcard and had to chargeback for a similar deal. Would’ve negged but cbf with Ozb’s censorship system

  • I prefer my Amazon Firestick.

    • Any particular reason?

  • fyi if anyone's interested I got the 4K version and trawled the internet to find out how to power it from TV USB. Surprisingly the information wasn't easy to find but putting it in developer mode/USB debugging seems to do the trick. Been using for a couple of weeks no issues.

    • usb power is not enough to power the cpu on the 4k/hd version, so you get a throttle cpu performance = lag.

      • Not for me. Been using youtube netflix and kodi with no issues.

      • I replaced mine with a better charger so I could add a hub for ethernet and usb support.

The remote on my 4k version lasted about 8-9 months. I use my phone as a remote now.

    • +2

Yeah I have three in different rooms, and the remote is very laggy and nonresponsive now on pretty much all of them (the least is the one that has been used the least)

  • What you guys spend the $20 gift card on?

  • +1

    Now $48 at HN

    • they just wanted to make you to be stuck with harvey norman GC
