  • Haven't tried these, I think I saw them on the 'news' though

My favourite variety atm. Got a box at Costco recently - $5 a kilo. I'll absolutely be grabbing some of these.

    • +3

They're very crunchy and sweet. Love these.

  • These were a favorite of mine for a time!

  • Very nice can recommend!

  • Taste like sugar

  • +3

Hardly ever buy fruit and veg from supermarkets but will definitely have to go and get some. Like Banj0 we tried some from Costco and they were really nice.

Every apple from Coles/WW is just NOT fresh.
    https://www.smh.com.au/national/our-tests-show-supermarket-a…
or Google "supermarket apple not fresh"
better buy from local market. cheaper and fresher.
the cheapest and ugliest look ones are the freshest.

    • I don't think I've seen Envy outside of Costco so we'll have to take our chances and see what they are like.

      • When I first saw them (year or two back? Maybe more…Covid time) it was in Woolworths, and they were advertised as "Exclusive to Woolworths".

That might have been just for a season.

      • they have been in Woolies for a fair few years now, well in VIC atleast.
But they are only around for a few months each year

        • We don't really buy fruit and veg from supermarkets so maybe we've just overlooked them. First time we noticed them was at Costco. We've also been buying Bravo but it does depend on price a little.

    • +3

There they're talking about apples off season. But honestly anything off season is going to be kept in storage…because it's off season.

This doesn't apply to imported stuff of course, but I feel it excessive to mail an apple half way across the world.

    • +1

I support buying local for sure - but what you're saying is not accurate.
The same producers supply the local markets and also Coles/WW - the apples come from the same Australian growers. Apples are not harvested or in season all year round, usually harvested once a year - then kept in storage to supply the country all year. This is just natural science, you can't harvest apples all year. If you are not wanting to eat "off-season" or "not fresh" apples, then the apples will have to be imported. So it's really whether you want Australia to import apples or you want to support your own growers and economy.

Cheaper and ugly does not mean fresh either. Plenty of cheap and ugly produce in the local markets that is definitely not fresh too.

finally an apple product I can afford

    • +6

finally a fruit product on OzB

      • +1 for counterbalancing the KFC deals

  • +3

Bravo apples are better - darker red/black skin (full of antioxidants) and very crunchy - developed in WA. Expensive but lower classes (e.g. class 2, slightly redder) can go for $3/kg, etc.

    • +4

I had a tried bravo i think these are a better tasting

    • +1

Bravo apples are also slow to brown if you haven't realised! (perhaps you eat them too fast to notice haha) They are great for kids lunchboxes etc.

  • +2

Better than Jazz? That one sets a high bar

    • +5

Nope not better then Jazz, jazz easily still the best. I would pay extra for Jazz

    • +3

I rate Envy over all others but that's my tastes. Go and try them for yourself.

      • +3

Same, Envy much better than Bravo, Jazz etc

        • Agreed…for me personally anyway.

    • Pink lady top of the list for me. Also try missle apples!

    • +2

Was going to comment this. Still on the search who beats Jazz apples

  • +3

I'm 18 and I still go for free fruit for kids

    • +7

      'You're terrible, Muriel'

    • We’ll I guess you are someone’s kid after all….

      • haha its the one time my baby face is useful

    • Tight arse ….

      • As in a compliment yeah?

    • I get my kids to pick out any fruit, the ones set aside for kids are under ripe.

  • Smitten apples are delicious

  • Feels Japanese

  • +4

    Royal Gala or nothin'

    • It's part gala…how's that?

      • -1

OK - I just completed a report for work so that I don't have to work this w/e so pardon moi but I must ask you to 'please explain'?

        • +1

          From the wiki

Envy is a trademarked brand of the Scilate apple variety. Scilate is the result of a cross between Royal Gala and Braeburn. It was developed in New Zealand…

  • Better than Bravo? Which btw Woolies has at $4/kg which is a good price.

    • Bravo is pretty good! I love the crunchy sweet flavour.

  • +2

Once you go bravo, you never go back. Best tasting apples.

    • Then you have envy, and you never go back to bravo

      • Then I definitely gotta try it

  • I find Rockit/Missile Apples to be an absolute game changer in Apple varieties. Found in Asian grocers and fruit markets. They fetch for $10-20, so it’s probably not in keeping with True Ozbargain spirit, but damn these apples taste stunning. Under hyped, but heavily priced.

    • Hey

I went and found and bought some missile apples. They had tiny bite sized ones, 1kg $8. MY LIFE HAS BEEN CHANGED. THANK YOU!!!

  • My parents like this over others

  • Best. Now I dont need to go to Cosco.

  • +7

Everyone here is able to name apple varieties, when all I know are red apples and green apples…

Interesting that list…Fuji's well down the rankings, and they have been one of my favourite above many others in the list. Although, I have to say that the last Fuji apples I bought were pretty ordinary…too acid. They can be syrupy sweet and crisp though, and when I buy them of local regional growers they're usually amazing (varies a little year to year).

    • My personal top 5 without any doubt. Was raving to my friends about these ages ago. They never disappoint

    • +1

Insulted that golden delicious apples are so far down that list.

Golden delicious is the forefather of many popular varieties , including the envy (golden delicious-> royal gala -> envy)

  • the very best apples I have seen ?

  • +2

    Granny Smith or nothing.

    • Ahhh…the old fashioned sort.

    • Try a Mutsu…best ever

  • +2

    Kanzi are the best apples

  • +1

    Ambrosia are good also.

  • No one’s mentioned a Fuji or pink lady?

    • Or Rockit

  • Label looks like The Punisher symbol!

  • Never eaten. Better than red delicious?

  • Better than Rockit?

    • +1

Nah man, Rockit is best. These guys just doesnt know it yet.

  • +1

Wtf.. We talking apples here now!!

  • Why did they get rid of Fuji apples?

    • +1 for fuji

    • Have they gotten rid of it? I’m still buying them in stores

      • Oh, I meant in Woolworths. Which stores are you buying them at?

        • fruit shops

  • +1

Saw those in Aldi the other day. I’m not an apple person (capsicum has the same nutrients minus the sugar), but was very drawn to them, to the point I had to pick one up and inspect. Reading here it sounds like it’s way too sweet.

  • I haven't seen Fuji apples lately. They had always been my fav. Will try this out.
Need a good replacement for an apple. I simply have been buying pink lady for now

    • +3

Pink lady is so meh compared to Fuji. Try Jazz, it's closest to Fuji but more available, and supposed to be better.

      • Yeah but I couldn't find another option as Fuji had always been my go to apple.
I'll give the jazz a shot

  • is this the same apple that ruined earth?

  • I eat apples daily. Envy is my favorite.

  • not even organic.. too much

  • Very sweet apples. The other comparable is the Tasmania Tiger apple which hasn’t been around for a while now.

  • Thankyou 👍 just tried and they're sweet, crunchy, and delicious!

  • Mine are 100% frozen 🤮

  • Did a blind test with envy, bravo, royal gala and ambrosia; ambro turns out the sweetest. Royal is just pear'ish powdery.
