May I ask, what practical advantage is there for someone to buy automatic over solar powered watches? Modern solar watches has very good reserves after a few hours in the sun.

    • +12

People don't buy mechanical watches for their practical value.

      • -7

Of course, but that's not my question. Note the "practical" part.

        • +4

I don't understand your question, then.

You've been told that people don't buy mechanical watches for a practical reason but you want to know what the practical reason is for people buying mechanical watches?

          Huh?

            • +11

@CptnObvious: I'm not sure if you intend your witty comments to be insightful or inciteful.
Regardless, you have the best response you're going to get.

          • @O15: I think he's asking the mechanical differences between automatic vs solar..

            I think?

The question isn't worded very clearly and unsure why he went ape when you tried to answer.

            • +7

              @WatchNerd: lol @ Watchturd, sorry.

This guy is unhinged. I got curious and checked his profile, the pfp is certainly… a choice. And he's posted Seikos, a G-Shock and an Eco-Drive. Literally the same shit you post, so i guess he also has "the most appalling taste in watches".

I am also proud of having appalling taste in watches and having no idea of what I'm talking about.

              • +2

@rosebank: Unhinged is right, prime candidate for winner for most negs most often??

              • +1

@rosebank: That's funny - he buys the same watches anyway ("kid's watches")..
Some people are just twats and like to sit on here and argue all day regardless.

            • -7

@WatchNerd: Cry me a river. You and your goons are constantly piling on those who disagree with you or have different opinions. A little pushback and you scream bullying. Pathetic. Look in the mirror.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Well well .. look who has come to the show. The person who thinks he can speak on behalf of all men.
Low at how far off the truth that is. You say watchnerd has appalling taste in watches… Don't make laugh. From everything I have seen. You have the worst.
Did your watch make you feel more manly. Is that why you feel you can come to any other post an look down on their choices.
Dude you need a life. What a miserable way to be.

            • +3

@WatchNerd: Lol. I would pick on you too for always posting nice deals on watches and your taste is somewhat similar to mine.

            • +3

@WatchNerd: In the interest of disclosure, I thank you for helping me on the watch hunt a while back :)
              Ignore the (profanity)!

    • +11

Some people just reaaalllyyy like setting the time constantly.

    • +6

Because when the sun explodes in like a bazillion years from now there won’t be any way to charge your solar watch so you’ll need an automatic watch to keep time, m’kay?

    • +12

It's a 'romatic' or 'emotional' choice I reckon, and the engineering. Also aesthetic with skeletons and open hearts. I have a lot of autos but rarely wear them, and much prefer a solar quartz watch.

But at the same time, it's kinda cool that you have a thing on your wrist that uses springs and cogs and jewels and shit, and the movement of you hand spins the oscillating weight that 'charges' the mainspring of the watch and keeps time within +/- ~40s (cheap Seiko 4R). And sweeping hand, which only a few quartz movements have.

      • +7

springs and cogs and jewels and shit

I was about to say that myself.

        • +3

          You may have ESPN.

        • +1

Agree, it's about tradition and quality, more on the jewelery side than tech & minimum basic functionality etc.

Solar/Quartz is just easier after a while and they keep better time too (in short of spending a fortune).
I don't mind setting the odd automatic but gets old if it's all the time (noting that more time is wasted on other things, but still).

    • Sometime (most of the times) the watch you like it's mechanical, that's it

    • +2

Because you get to spend $400 every 2 years for the rest of the watches life to service them. Those who don't, end up with a crappy watch that can't keep the time after about 10 years.

  • Nice.

  • +1

New all time low? I remember the previous lowest was $175 , that's for the Citizen Eco-Drive BM7551-84X. Great watch at a great price.

    • +4

Stumbled across this which seems like a good price too -

Pagani Design PD2720 Chrono, Black Dial, 46.5mm… US$37.18 (~AU$54.20) Delivered @ Pagani Design Flagship Store Aliexpress

      Price breakdown - US$37.75 + GST $3.43 - $4 coupons, total US$37.18 (~AU$54.20)

Low stock so not worth posting.

Also white dial Pagani Design PD1734 is in stock.

      • +1

Looks interesting.. 46.5mm is huge though, would be nice if it was 40mm but obviously a fashion choice wearing something bold like that. Still tasteful though.

        • Just realised code - SS3 - takes US$3.00 off as well. Makes it US$34.18 delivered.

      • +1

        Thx for the suggestion WN,

Grabbed 1 to give a whirl, cheap enough..

I prefer the larger dials anyhoo, 45mm+

  • +1

Bullhead is my pick of the sale. I have both colours, and also the 70s original. This panda one is not getting lower than $199, I paid almost double.

Edit: I'll get one of these eventually: https://starbuy.com.au/meistersinger-no3-mens-watch-am908/ one hand, no date, awesome

    • +2

Mate, I am very curious to know, are you really a millionaire with a yacht and a private jet? 🤔

      • +5

My lawyers have advised me to not answer that question.

  • +3

@WatchNerd beat me by 16 minutes, but my pick of the Starbuy weekend sale would be the Squale 1521BRONBL.NB20. I really like bronze watches.

    • It looks nice. I also kind of like the Squale 1521PROFGR.PVE.

The price is pretty good for their specs.

I'm looking for a bronze watch, at the moment.

      • +1

Tudor have nice bronze Black Bays, or Glycine Combat Subs which are a lot cheaper. I think Kogan have a few, shipped from Ashford

        • I have my eye on the bronze BB with brown dial.
I'm just seeing if I can find something to scratch the itch without paying Tudor money.

    • That Squale is nice. I have a bronze Glycine Combat Sub that looks almost the same, except a deeper blue and on leather, and ETA movement? I can't remember. I've never worn it.

      • It looks nice. Why don't you wear it?

        • +1

Dunno, I haven't worn prob 80% of my watches

  • -6

Dude believe or not, I can get a Rolex at this price, with better quality and better looking.

    • +1

      Dude believe or not

      Not.

    • and better looking what?

    • post it as a deal then

  • +2

Oh, great. I really did not need to see this!

    Citizen Eco-Drive CA0791-81X $239

    https://starbuy.com.au/citizen-eco-drive-mens-watch-ca0791-8…

    • I got my eye on this one too. So tempting 😋

      • +1

Me too, I just pulled the trigger

  • Anyone know the maximum band width on this?

    • +3

      1600mbps.

      Sorry. I have no idea.

      • I deserved that :P

  • …id go the green

  • +3

A nice, understated Eco Drive in white dial with day/date for $149 this weekend.
    https://starbuy.com.au/citizen-eco-drive-mens-solar-power-wa…

  • I really do like Citizen a lot, theyre really great affordable watches. As much as I want this, im going to Japan in two weeks and I want to try my hand at Vintage watch shopping. I've heard people getting Rolex's for significantly cheaper. Not that I want a rolex, but definitely something I want to try.

    • +1

If you think you like Citizen now, wait until you see their JDM stuff.

The watches they market here may be cheap and good value but the designs are a bit… Well, to put it nicely, they are completely void of any class or finesse (for the most part).

      • +1

Oh yeah which ones? Found this site
        https://japan-select.com/collections/citizen/CITIZEN?gclid=C…

Citizen are pretty good value, depends on the model though, some are pretty meh or vanilla but like the eco-drive/promaster divers.

        • My favourites are the automatics with silver leaf dial (~$1k) and the eco drive Chronomasters with washi dial ($3k+).

          • @O15: Those look nice, not cheap but wouldn't mind one one day.. +/- 5s per year is appealing.

        • I have a few on the first page, but want so many more. The weeb in me wants the Evangelion ana-digi.

    • +1

check out jdm casios if you really want to go down that rabbit hole..

      • +1

        https://www.radio-eva.jp/shopbrand/CITIZEN/

I'm getting all 3 when I go to Japan. Gonna weeb the f out.

        • +1

Pretty unique ones there for the collection 😁

          • @G-rig: I'm gonna buy so much shit in Japan

            • +4

@rosebank: My watch hobby is in constant battle with wanting to live a minimalist lifestyle. I see you don't have that problem.

              • +3

@WatchNerd: I'm a maximalist for certain things (shoes, watches, tools, whisky, clothes, vinyl, AV gear, headphones, amps) but minimalist in other things (power tools, kitchen knives, single use kitchenwear that can be achieved with a kinfe, single use appliances, PC and related electronics, furniture but I have a weird thing with nice chairs, not sexually tho)

              • +2

@WatchNerd: Yeah one day a nice omega would be better than all the other watches. Nice having a choice though and can get a lot of watch for not too much these days so they don't have to cost heaps. Ideally I would still prefer a good 5 watch collection with one in one out policy, upgrading and refining as you go. But have already surpassed that.

                • @G-rig: I don't think it's worth replacing all watches with one.
A nice luxury watch a nice mid tier and a daily beater would be great.

                  • @maverickjohn: Yeah 5 or 6 is a good number, of various styles. Easy to collect more obviously but a lot don't get worn.

    • You will see heaps when you go there.
Even in Don Quixote they had a luxury watch section.
      Japan is amazing.
Really regretted not buying one in 2018 as now prices almost trebled
