American Express Platinum Charge Card - 225,000 Bonus MR Points ($5,000 Spend in 3 Months, $1,450 Annual Fee) @ American Express

810

First post.

Been hunting for the next card for reward points. The highest extra points was as high as 300,000 MR points on The American Express® Platinum Card, but that last year.

Recently saw an ad that has 225,000 bonus MR points instead of the typical 150,000 MR points. It disappeared ever since I clicked into the page.

If you go into it as per normal, it will show only 150,000 MR Points offer.

Searching on google "The American Express® Platinum Card 225000 points" can easily bring the page for the 225,000 bonus MR points offer.

  • $1,450 annual Card Fee
  • Receive $450 Travel Credit each year
  • Platinum Travel Benefits including travel insurance
  • Purchase Protection including product warranty extension and stolen or damaged product coverage
  • 2.25 Points per $1 spent on purchases excluding Government bodies in Australia

300,000 was last offered in February… my 18 months ended in March and I am itching for a 300,000 offer.

    • quick question - once you cancel your card with amex, do you still get to hold onto them points or do they disappear/expire?

      • +1

they are gone. not sure about having multiple cards though.

  • +2

    Net profit?

    • +5

1 point = 0.5c, so $1125 if you swap the points for cash. Otherwise it is 112.5k points in Qantas/Kris/Virgin.

But net profit with this card is hard to judge because it really depends on how much you’ll use the other benefits of the card.

      • +9

        Agreed.

Accor Plus free night is worth about ~$300 if you use it at a decent Sofitel.
Virgin lounge membership & Priority Pass also have some value if you’re travelling. If you’re paying Virgin for lounge that’s ~$300 saved.
Roadside car assistance included if your car is not too old (I think 7 years?)
Other insurances are also quite good & worth looking at.
Australian & WSJ subscriptions are worth not much too.
$450 travel credit is probably worth a bit less than that so say ~$400.
Hilton gold for breakfast included is also a good benefit.

A lot of value there if you hunt & use it.

        • How could you get virgin lounge?

          • +2

@hishaken: Virgin lounge access is included with this card :

            Access to 1400+ Airport Lounges
Access 1,400+ Airport Lounges in more than 140 countries7, including the Centurion® Lounge, Escape Lounges - The Centurion® Studio Partner, Priority PassTM Lounges and more

            • +3

@kipps: Worth noting for the uninitiated that you need to be flying on a Virgin or partner airline booking for access. Partner airline is not guaranteed either, think there's a lot of t&c

          • @hishaken: You just show your card and boarding pass at the entrance of the Virgin lounge.

            • -1

@SeaWolf au: Does it have to be card with virgin/star alliance airline boarding pass?
How about other star alliance lounge?

              • @hishaken: Virgin flight. They aren't a part of star alliance.

        • +1

Roadside car assistance included if your car is not too old (I think 7 years?)

And not too big. Gross vehicle weight has to be less than 2000kg. Rules out most new cars being sold now.

        • No Roadside assistance anymore..

          • @hi5: I know what you mean. No roadside assistance anymore for you and for me and for others who thought they actually had it but didn’t.

        • It has some good car hire benefits - so long as your trip is at least 150 km. The car insurance used to cover the whole thing excess and everything else. And the discounts with Avis are significant.
          https://www.pointhacks.com.au/american-express/amex-platinum…

Take care with the travel insurance, they used to provide cover no matter the AMEX spend but I think now the flights must be booked to the amex card. Not sure it the same applied to domestic travel.

        • +1

The priority pass is OK but not that great. Citibank prestige includes credits at dining venues whereas Amex excludes it

        • Is the travel insurance only valid if you book the travel with the card? Not fights/ travel that has already been booked?

        • You also get the $200 Aus dining credit and the $200 overseas dining credit.
          And the Amazon Prime subscription.
And booking using the $450 travel credit will give you a Fine Hotels and Resorts benefit giving you breakfast, $200 worth of hotel credit, a room upgrade and a bottle of wine on arrival.

    • +16

      200 points = $1
      225000 + 11250 points = $1181.25

      $1181.25 + $450 = $1631.25 benefits

      $1575 - $1450 = $181.25 net profit

      • +2

        181? Shocking

      • Edit : $1631.25 - $1450 = $181.25

      • +4

Legend no point of applying then

      • +1

Don’t forget the $200 dining in Australia and $200 abroad. Not to mention the points can be tf to KrisFlyer making this much more valuable than a qantas rewards card for point chasers.

        • +10

Its more than just the dining credit, here is what I think it valued as:
          * $200 Local Dining credit (worth $200)
          * $200 Global Dining credit (worth $200)
          * Accor plus membership with 1 free hotel night (worth $399)
          * $450 travel credit (worth $450)
          * Up to $84 amazon prime membership cashback (worth $79 for annual membership)
          * 2 x Unlimited Priority Pass card (exclude restaurants credit) (worth $400)
          * Unlimited access to AMEX centurion lounges
          * Unlimited access to Virgin Domestic lounges
          * Unlimited access to Plaza Premium lounges

Plus the below nice to have offer (which I don't use much):
          * The Australian Premium subscription ($7/week = $364)
          * $75 x 2 NET-A-PORTER and MR PORTER credit (worth $150)
          * Hotel Elite Status: Hilton Honors Gold status, Marriott BonvoyTM Gold status, Radisson Rewards Premium status

All of these are on top of the new card holder bonus
So if you travel quite often, just the lounges access, hotel statuses and dining credit already well worth the $1450

          • @littlesoldier: You still have to figure out how to spend 5k with an Amex tho

            • @Pranks King: Just buy some giftcards if you have nothing to spend in mind
Prezzee does accept AMEX if you dont care about the extra reward points from coles / woolies

Also note that you can use AMEX to pay most bills too
just add AMEX into paypal and pay the bills via AusPost app

            • +11

@Pranks King: Idk - if you can’t spend $5k in three months then the card might not be for you.

These perks are generally suited to higher spenders and the rewards reflect that.

            • +1

@Pranks King: I love seeing any business with a Square terminal, as they charge a flat fee regardless of the card so Amex always work.

          • -1

@littlesoldier: And use like 5% of that. Cash value is the real exchange

            • @Pcosmic: I mainly exchange for Coles GC and have been using it pretty quickly
Depends on family needs, but spending $5000 in grocery shopping over 3 years isnt that hard….

          • @littlesoldier: WTF since when did they include unlimited Centurion lounge access? I've Alway's needed to provide my physical Centurion card for HKG, LAX, LHR, JFK, SEA to get into them etc
Normal AE lounges = Plat charge
Granted, the last time I tried this was just before Covid…

Don't have any trips coming up in the foreseeable future so, can anyone that's used their Plat Charge @ these lounges confirm?

            • @Magnus Awesome: Not sure what lounges were available to Centurion-only card holders as I’m a lowly Plat holder, but I know the AE lounges went through a rebrand and they’re now called Centurion lounges (e.g. Sydney’s AE lounge is now called The Centurion Lounge) with no change in entry policy.

Solid card but has been watered down since the removal of AFR and the Reserve credit for new customers. The Australian is no substitute for AFR.

    • +1

There are ways to read AFR articles without a sub. Aust articles were harder to read without the sub. I actually appreciate the WSJ sub included with the Aust.

      • what are the ways brother?

          • @ymmf: Wow. Never knew this. Thanks.

  • Does anyone know what happens to the home loan serviceability when you have a charge card?

    • Credit limit is $1 or doesn’t count for charge card.

      • thanks.. good to know

    • In credit limit it shows $0 on credit report. Since it's not a credit card it's impact is very low

      • thanks.. good to know

if i buy gucci bags and refund later, will it contribute to the spending?

    • +2

      Bookin.com hotel booking.

    • +3

Book a Qantas business class flex flight and cancel it after you get the payout. Here is a 5k flight - Sydney to Tokyo one way on Sept 21.

  • +2

I got declined from the previous 300k offer while easily satisfying the minimum income requirement, can I reapply or will it be auto rejected?

    • +3

I’d have 3 months between reapplying to a lender that knocked me back, personally.

    • Yeah you need to wait at least 3 months.

  • 325k points was offered in Nov last year.

  • The referral links show 225,000 points if you use a VPN.

    • VPN to where? Anywhere?

      • to these nuts

      • +1

        Any server in Australia.

    • Referral codes don't seem to match what comes up when clicked. Or is this why a vpn is needed? And why is a VPN needed?

  • +1

The card is worth every cent if you use all benefits which are mainly targetted towards travellers.

In 2023, we have already received benefits worth over 5k

    • +1

how to do manage to get 5k benefits out of the card?

      • +1

        Hilton upgraded and free breakfast
        FHR was the main one
        450 travel credit
        Accor
        Multiple lounges
        400 dining credit
        Multiple cashback offers
        Mr Porter, Amazon prime

        • Plus the points I accumulate

        • +1

          What’s FHR please

    • For me the high $ spend justifies the fee easily.
      I average $100k/month

      • Are you putting business expenses on the credit card?

        • Sure am

      • Mines personal, I clock about 15k

        • +1

Wtf u spending 15k a month on? Lol

      • Im in hunt for a new chopper deal on ozbargain 😂😂

  • +2

Just try a few times in incognito mode of your browser and you will also get 225000 bonus MR points offer
Better to use referral link in OZB to benefit the community

  • +3

So we must not have any AMEX card products within the past 12 months to get bonus?

    • 18 as a primary card holder

  • +2

Any chance for 300k again later this year?

  • +2

if i have amex in the past 18 months then i wont be eligible?

  • Any way to stack with CPA ($200 off annual fee)?

    • You will need to apply via CPAs referral link which is only 100k atm

    • No point to do it as the extra points worth a lot more

  • Does this stack with referrals?

  • +2

Just wait until the business platinum offers above 400,000 MR again.

It was offering 450,000 MR last year:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716434

Then just get an ABN and sign up (they don't check cash flows).

I got the Velocity Business Card (annual fee $249) which offered 160k velocity points in May. Just had it arrive in my account no problem.

    • That's way more appealing! But will it come again? Eofy…

    • "Then just get an ABN and sign up (they don't check cash flows)."
how does this work exactly, who doesn't check Amex, ATO?
does this work for any business card?

  • +3

I used one of these personal cards in my business years ago. Used it for travel insurance but also good for paying lots of govt fees for clients.
It also waived the annual fees on any one amex credit (not charge) card, so you get two lots of travel credits. It may still do this.
Funny thing, when i cancelled the charge card my credit card remained free for about 10 years whilst providing $400 in travel credits each year.
I only mention it now as amex recently sent me a lettter saying they are going to start charging me an annual fee next year if i dont have a charge card.

    • what did you have to do to get them to waive annual fees for another card with travel credits? I could probably justify getting it if I got 2 sets for $450 credit.

      • +1

He’s probably talking about the Platinum Reserve card which had a $400 travel credit and was offered free until late 2020.

Card is still available but no travel credit for new members.

        • yeah it is Plat Reserve. When I got the charge card, I called the help number and they waived ongoing fees on the Plat Reserve.
The travel credit has to be booked through American Express Travel Online which can complicate matters with airline travel and may cost more than some of the other options.

  • What’s MR

  • Anyone with a plat edge and applied for this and still got the bonus points?

    • No you won't qualify for bonus

  • +3

Link to the offer (so need to goggle) is here: https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/the-platinum…

  • Wish I didn't have to cancel my QANTAS AMEX Ultimate and wait 18 months before I'm eligible for this… maybe I'll be lucky and they'll send out upgrade invitations to existing cardholders.

On another note, I heard they used to include an AFR subscription. That would've been a key selling point if they had kept it (instead of switching to mainstream news).

    • Will u cancel for it? Im in a dilemma too

      • Maybe I won't…. I have to admit, that's why I like the upgrade offer path which is how I ended up with the current card (from a previous Qantas Discovery).
