The list of games on the website is not exhaustive. If there are people that want to play Starcraft at the event, we will run it.

  • What do people do at these lans, last time I went was like 15 years ago.

    What games are played

    • +2

We play games, eat food, and do heaps.

There is a list of games on the website but we have everything from PC games, console games, board games, eating challenges, lego building comps, Virtual Reality games, etc.

Is deodorant optional at this event

    • +35

We do have industrial strength air conditioning and air filtration. And we have never had an issue with this in the past. But if there was an issue a member of the team would happily deal with it.

      • +42

This was a more professional quality reply than I deserved

  • I did not think LANs would still be a thing!
I remember going to one over 20 years ago!

    • +1

They are just as good as ever!

      • I think it's great! Enjoy!

  • +6

I just wanted to offer my support. In this instance you appear to literally be doing 'god's work'.

  • +1

Really naive question, but how does this work with pc security? I’m just a hobby gamer and don’t feel confident in my knowledge and ability to secure my windows PC to prevent somebody on the LAN from accessing my files or spreading a virus onto my pc

    • +8

Most of this is handled on our end. Our network setup is quite extensive.
Unless you actively share your files with other people, you're pretty safe.

Any explanations on about those tickets

    • I'm not sure what you mean.

The Console/AFK ticket get's you access to all aspects of the event that don't require you to bring your own device (console games, board games, VR, Lego, food, pass the aprcel, etc.)

The BYOC get's you access to everything.

And the Rent-a-PC get's you access to everything and we will provide a PC for you.

  • Wish we had something like this in NSW

    • +5

We are hoping to run one in Sydney next year, so stay tuned!

      • +1

        Brisbane? 😁

        • +1

No set plans, but hopefully one day. The biggest issue is getting the equipment up there as it's too far to drive, and too big to just take on a plane.

  • what is on the menu foodwise?

    • +5

BBQ for lunch, pizza for dinner, both included in your ticket cost. Extra fried food including doughnuts and potato cakes on sale all day as well.

      • Vegetarian pizzas available?

        • +5

Yep, vegetarian options available for both meals.

  • +2

Are there pictures of previous LAN events? I'd like to see what kind of setup is available. Chairs, tables, buffet table, etc.

    • +7

Lots of photos from our prior events on the site, just hit the events option up the top and then select a prior date.
This photo gives you a decent look at the chairs and tables: https://www.thebiglan.com/img/thebiglan7/1.jpg

For serving food we actually have a full kitchen with a servery rather than a buffet table.

  • I’m more impressed that the church let the space to you until Saturday night!

    • +3

We gotta pack up reeeeal quick.

Some of my fond memories in youth include putting on a big spread, drinks; and having 5-7 of the nearest pals helping to lug their 20kg PCs, half with flat screens, the others with 15kg CRTs all set up and playing Battlefield Vietnam/Battlefield 2/Unreal Tournament/Supreme Commander/Dawn Of War a whole weekend straight. Worst possible network switch, plenty of powerboards daisy chained. One friend had a pedestal fan strapped to the side of his case because it was such a PoS.

Dawn of War was always the best! And there were always plenty of BS kills in shooters - parents were more-or-less rather forgiving at the 3am rage!
Internet slowly killed the fun, half of us have kids now, and separated by distance, and time, but the memories forever remain. I hope to do this for them one day.

    • +2

Well said and hit me in the feels

    • Playing Supreme Commander with the silent agreement with your friends to not attack each other early and building up enormous armies before smashing them together and everyone lagging and laughing so hard

  • No fortnite?

    • +2

      No fortnite.

  • You guys just had one at Beaconsfield Baptist church close to where I am. Just missed it. When is the next Beaconsfield event? Is this yearly?

    • No set timeline on Beaconsfield Baptist but we do hope to continue running there on occasion, maybe once or twice a year. If you subscribe to our mailing list on the website (or follow any of our socials) we'll make sure everyone knows about them.

Our events in Mitcham are the main deal though.

  • Can you add some fighting games such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, etc.? These are very easy to host on console, 1 vs 1 and can have knockout stages with group of contestants.

    • We are going to start trialing some additional fighting games, but we currently don't have all the equipment to do it properly (we are hoping to for Big LAN 10) but if people are able to bring their own equipment and copies of the game we can definitely make something happen.

  • Any minecraft players here?

    • Yeah, we have Minecraft at the event. There is a dedicated server at the event for it.

  • Prizes aren't listed?

    • Prizes are released gradually as we approach the event.

    • -2

      pizza vouchers
      cartons of 3L coke/doritos/rexona/shower gel
      star wars tees
      anko brand trackies
      usb gadgets - fans/vacuums etc
      desktop mini fridge
      beard oil

  • Are we playing pass the parcel with Lucky's Dad's rules?

    • +1

Great question, we do a hybrid. We don't guarantee it will land on everyone, and some people might get multiple goes, but we do have some lollies in most of the layers. But definitely the big prize is in the middle.

      • Nation of squibs!
        XD

  • Can I bring u18's with me if I am supervising them? (on their own ticket)

    • +2

Hey, can you please shoot me a DM through our Discord or Facebook page. We tend to deal with these situations on a case by case basis.

  • When does the ozbargain code expire?

    • Tonight is the last night to get the early bird + ozbargain discount. After tonight the early bird pricing finishes but you will still be able to use the ozbargain code for 10% off. But it will be 10% off full price.

  • Cheers jabob

  • Hi OP, just wondering if the lans are tournaments? The reason I asked is that I noticed aoe2 de is running for only 2 hour which is basically only four games max so don't think that is long enough.

    • Hey, the finish times are just rough guides for people's planning. They will be full tournaments and will go for as long as required. But we list it like that so the average gamer knows what they might be able to enter.

E.g. most people that enter the AOE2 tournament will be able to join Tetris or Rocket League after lunch, but a final or semi final for AOE may still be running.
