Can't vouch for the store and it's not clear whether this is the 38mm or 40mm version, but reviews are good and looks like you get the genuine ST1901 movement at an amazing price for a mechanical chronograph that is very interesting to look at. Note, it is hand wind only with no hacking.

Also stated as Sapphire Crystal but no guarantees of that.

Another seller with similar price.

http://aliexpress.com/item/1005005628974774.html (US$64.09 with extra strap and panda dial version available)

Take your pick for a punt. Usual price for these from other sellers is about double.

These are the unofficial version, but the "official" Sea-Gull version with same Sea-Gull movement but several hundred dollars more is not worth the money.

These are proper nice and crazy value at that price wow

    • +2

Replying here so people can see this on first page of comments: the watch movement received was quartz and not mechanical as advertised. The seller description was not accurate and a majority of OzBargainers had to apply for a full refund on the order.

I would request the original poster to edit the post description to warn people off.

In retrospect a legitimate seller probably would let you select the specs and price accordingly i.e. No swan/goose neck, sapphire/mineral glass, clear caseback, luminous hands or original hands.

      • +1

Oh shoot I didn't even know they made this in quartz… that literally kills like 90% of it's appeal quite frankly

  • +2

I do like the aesthetic. Suprised that no one else even tries to compete on this price/quality/feature ratio.

    • Actually, there's the HKED variant, you can read all about it in this guide to genuine 1963s.

I personally reckon Ed's version has better aesthetics, more subtle and it's $350 not $500. You get to choose many dials and most importantly very detailed qc. He can advise you on servicing as well (aftersales). The proprietor was very well known in wus forum, all round nice bloke.

I wish I had the money to buy another… sigh

  • 98 with tax ?

    • prices in title include GST.

Don't forget to use the coupon code

  • +4

    Incredible value at that price.

  • +3

These are crazy value, I paid like four hundred bucks for something similar but with better QC a few years ago

    • +3

Yeah, almost too good to be true. I've got one from the wus original re-issue groupbuy. Incredible level of finish, comes with both type of casebacks, and a real swan-neck regulator. Instant cult following. I won't be surprised if there would be lower quality reps.

  • +2

Might take a punt for sub $100 thanks op

    • Are there any watches you don't like?

      • +3

They're just completing the Aliexpress starter pack

      • +5

Blame the affordable watch forum :(

  • +3

Very tempting. But once clicking on the different choices, it seems the hands are not in the the original blue. The dial also has a different style as well. Seems like a good buy if not you are not after the original look.

    • Hard to be certain which images are correct. Pictures in the reviews appear to be the original look. You could also try the other seller listed.

      http://aliexpress.com/item/1005005628974774.html

although hands look a touch short there … guessing its the 40mm

      • +2

The 1 star review on that listing shows the panda one doesn't have glass back, possibly a quartz version?

    • Yeah, I have a feeling the discounted version is the one with the non-original hands. Great price for what it is, but I do want the original so will pass.

Seagull Movement? Is this watch going to steal your chips?

    • +1

      Hi hungry, I'm dad

    • +2

A seagull once had a movement on my head.

      • And it did…. And it did.

    • -4

Not chips, just your personal data. LOL

    • more likely to just shit all over your wrist

  • +1

Wow, have been looking at the sugess chronographs with the same movement for a while but this is just too cheap to ignore. My first mechanical!

  • +1

    All codes have been claimed

  • +1

It says all codes have now been claimed using SS6

  • All codes have been claimed but bought one anyway. Thanks

  • Try SS3 now for US$3 off instead of 6

  • Good luck..I had one of these seagull watches, can't recall which variant but looks like this.

I think I bought it from a seller through Amazon
.anyway it didn't keep time at all so I ended up returning it. Disappointing as it had some aesthetics that I liked.

    • +1

Didn’t keep time? What do you mean? How off was it per day?

      • probably just needed demagnetisation and regulation.

  • 5k rmb (around $1k aud) on taobao

My partner will kill me if I get it…

    • +3

Your partner will kill you for spending $100? That doesn't sound healthy

        • Yeah calm down

        • +3

          Where's her computer from lol?

        • -1

Her ancestors are most likely from China. She needs to be educated and tell her to stop watching Western BS MSM

          • @yayo321: One of the more curious claims made during the Vietnam war was that (a) "Chinese PLA soldiers are fighting in Vietnam - there are no Chinese in Vietnam so these casualties came from China".

Like most of the lies that were so blatantly obvious that they were an insult, it was baseless - but did highlight that China had suspended its ~ 3000 year territorial disputes while the greater threat to its region was dealt with.

Both lies were exposed after '74 when many ethnic Chinese were fleeing Vietnam and being given refugee status by the nation that had denied their existence as China recommenced the border dispute.

I had a grandma who didn't talk to one of her sons for months because he bough a VW - she would never had spoken to him again had it been a Toyota:-/

    • +1

Yea right, like you or your wife have never bought China made products before.

      • I did, but these one clearly "chinese"

      • +2

She should do a DNA test and she’ll be surprised XD

  • Panda looks nice, but OOS. Wouldn't mind the panda white.

    • +1

      do you have link please

      • It's the same link, the fourth option when you select colour.

        Currently still OOS.

  • +1

Anyone know which variant is 38/40mm? Skinny wrists here

    • +2

you could try this one for a bit higher price to be sure of 38mm. It has the swan neck regulator which is also worth a bit more

      http://aliexpress.com/item/1005005670387191.html

      • +1

Thank you. I've already pulled the trigger, and sent a message asking if they can confirm 38mm. Wish I committed to your link in hindsight though

    • +9

Seller said 38mm or 40 mm will be randomly sent by warehouse.. I said no thank you

      • +1

That doesn't sound great & not the way they should sell.

I am hoping for 38mm, will be ok with 40mm

      • +1

        Lol WTF.
Id be giving that a miss and find a better quality seagull watch and seller.

  • +13

    I'll be wearying about this.

The authentic from Sea-gull sells for $1k+ with a rather heavy back plate with # of where your watch is within their limited release.

They also allowed other companies manufacture and sell watch based on this ST movement but all the authorised manufacturers have a transparent backing showing the movements (goose neck / no goose neck.)

I believe there are some unauthorised makers getting into the action and they have very very limited details on what is being offered and this is one of them..

This is a cheap way to get into an otherwise cult watch but i won't chance it.. it's similar to buying a citizen from aliexpress.

Edit: the second link from op might be a safer buy

    • +1 to the above, if something sound too good to be true…….

from what I have read in WUS a few years ago, the cheaper version usually has much rougher finish casing/dial, the movements has scratches all over them, suggesting that they were probably factory seconds, even those ones were going for like $200-$300 USD iirc.

but I guess at $100, by all means give it a go……….

    • +2

This is definitely not the OG version, but $100 isn't bad for one that uses the ST movement, if it does of course. I'm getting the one in the second link because more details and pics in reviews

  • Are these 38mm or 40mm?

  • Thanks OP. Was looking at these a few weeks back and have to punt at this price

  • +1

per the seller, the warehouse randomly sends 38mm or 40mm. They are checking whether a request for a certain size can be met.

    • +1

They advised that it will not be possible to specify which size you want (although i guess there is no harm in asking for a particular size.

They say that stock is now running low.

  • +2

Display caseback with big rubies & blued screws. Very tempting.

  • That's a crazy price. Bought for $250 2 years ago.

  • +3

    What's so special about these?

Bought it anyway, one for the motherland instead of my stack of seikos and citizens.

  • Does anyone know how to pick if the sapphire version?

Seems like it could be either acrylic or sapphire on the second link ans hardlex for the first

    • Seller at the main link says it is Sapphire

  • +3

The unofficial version has the taller bezel without the beautiful eye-catching domed glass, which I feel is a hallmark of this watch. There do appear to be other sellers on AliExpress (I'm unable to link to here without getting my comment unpublished) who have the correct dome and dial (all the Chinese characters) and with the display back and sapphire crystal price is $248 though for these and they have a cheaper strap

  • Good price, but wouldn't it be cheaper for you to just buy another watch once this one breaks?

  • Be careful guys, in china this watch costs 1000 aud after discount. this price is not reasonable. and the watch maker making statement on their official seller on TIANMAO that watch boys needs to be cautious about fakes on ali express. all the best.

  • When the website load, first watch photo seems ok.
But when you click on one of the "color" selection , the photo displayed look sus (comparing digit "6" - very curly font, top of "8" seems to be slightly cut off).

    • You can look at the reviews, they show photos which look like the original watch photo in the listing.

      • +3

        Yes, I see that.
Reviewer bots? Their accounts started early this June (referring to "AliExpress Buyer Since" status).

  • +1

Any strap recommendations that'd pair nicely with this? Review says the NATO that comes with this one sucks.

  • Is this the same watch? Why is it so exy … https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001304377435.html

  • +6

Yeah, strongly considered, but my alarm bells are going nuts on this one. 80% of the reviews are from Japan and all say some variation of the same thing, and the handful of non-Japanese reviews are all Canadian, but in terribly broken English (???).
If you search for the watch in general on Aliexpress, you'll find a bunch of stores selling the same watch around the same price, and all of them are flooded with reviews JUST from Japan.

    • +1

Or all the reviews that are variations of "I received the item".

      • The best ones are the ones that say “I will recommend this watch to all my friends”. Firstly, TOTALLY NORMAL thing to say in a review right. And also, I definitely want all my friends to be wearing the same watch as me. We will gather together and…. Compare watches. Or something.

    • -2

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you implying that all the reviews are fake, or is the watch fake?

  • +1

jodie (JOMW) has done a few videos on these elcheapo seagulls….
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSixONUt6-M
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbdZGxpX2Mk

  • I have a seagull skelleton, changed the bands to a seiko leather strap, looks amazing for a cheap watch.

  • +3

The cost of servicing this watch is probably higher than the cost of purchasing the watch itself. I can't support a throwaway culture like this, even though the dial looks really cool

    • The movement looks really cool too and has a lot of history, with the Swiss Venus machinery and design being bought by the Chinese Tianjin Watch Factory.

Here's a good blog on the history and its definitely a good movement to have in a watch collection. https://kaminskyblog.com/2017/09/12/seagull-st19-chronograph…

I have the same movement in a microbrand watch costing several hundred dollars and it is a pleasure to have it.

    • The throwaway view is interesting and there may be a higher risk of issues with this movement … but how would you compare this to a Seiko with an NH35 movement where servicing is also not cost justified and replacement of the movement much more cost effective?

  • Made in china movement same as those knock off R01ex replica.

  • +2

Worth watching a few of JOMW reviews on these, compares the 38mm and 40mm. Things to consider are acrylic vs sapphire and strap width.

    https://youtu.be/HViB-sOJTCY

Some videos are a bit old but no doubt there are a few copies of these for sale now from various places (it's a copy anyway but would be better to get a good quality copy). He got his from here:

    https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005001304377435.html

I also don't like to support throw away culture and would recommend watches with a nh35 movement etc, at least you can replace the movement cheaply and easily. Wouldn't be worth trying to sell many of these homage Watches, unless it would be very cheap to a mate.

  • thanks OP. Just bought.

For all those on the fence, the movement itself is worth $80. Its a known chinese made (Seagull) manual chronograph movement. Just buy it.

    p.s I'm a watch guy.
