    • What on earth is dell doing! The first two days it showed backlit keyboard, the 3rd day it didn't but now it says backlit again! Good luck with whatever you get :|

      • Dell have run out of pre-built (In Stock for Fast Delivery) ones. So now that they are building them on demand, they can easily configure them. This, of course, means that delivery will take much longer.

        • "Your Estimated Delivery Date for this order is on or before 2012-09-13
          "

          so about 2 weeks

  • So now it included as standard for backlit keyboard. - feel sorry for the ppl that don't have the backlit as standard.

  • Code still works, more customizable with colours, and now comes with back lit keyboard as per order confirmation.

  • Just bought one myself, choice of cover, 6gig ram and 750g hdd for 799. Great deal for the FHD display and the in home service

  • Thanks for the post! Grabbed one just now. Glad about the backlit keyboard because I've had one on my vostro 3700 for the past 2 two years and i can't live without it.

  • Just got mine … and it appears to be DOA!! Hard drive failure.

PXE-E61: MEdia test failure, check cable.

On the phone to tech support now, so annoying!!

    • Yes DOA, first said I can return it. Which will take 2-3 weeks to replace … took 2 days to receive it in the first place ..

Got a technician coming tomorrow, I hope to replace/fix the missing/broken HDD. It was funny, the phone guy called me back to ask the status of the HDD and error message. Which information I had given to him and questioned if he would pass on. I guess the technician really needed that info.

My first Dell product … not happy so far. I've brought ASUS in the past without issue.

      • I got a dell studio 15, and the tech came out to see me 3 times in the first 9 months on the machine.

Twice for the keyboard, once was which when it kept popping keys
when used and the other was the the backlit stopped working.
The third time was for a dead HDD, which meant I lost
about 1 weeks worth of work.

And unbeknownst to me, there was also a stress fracture
crack on the back of the screen, where the hinges of the
screen is from constant opening and closing of the screen.

When I realised this, it was already out of the 12 month warranty.

Plus the replacement hard disk started getting bad sectors about
        4 months into the replacement.

Dell didnt want to know anything about it cos the machine
        was out of warranty.
Something about the HDD being part of the machine, hence
        nothing.

So wasnt an entirely problem free experience.
Would I get Dell again? If it's cheap enough, I guess.
        But otherwise, no.

        • Agree, sometime dell will bother you. Sometime dell will give you big surprise.

For the $9 printer and this deal, I will say dell is unbeatable.

        • The tech called just before, to bring out a HDD, then asked me what model I have and said something about a desktop … I'm thinking how can the tech no know what I have and be bring out a desktop HDD.

There seems to be a big hole in their communications. He should be here within the hour, so fingers crossed.

  • orderd mine on 27 and recived on 28 , 20 hours after the order , however I missed the backlit keyboard ,
very happy so far with this device .

  • Does anyone know if it will take more than 8GB or ram? Dell is saying max 8GB but keen to try 2x 8GB sticks once it arrives in 2 weeks.

    • me too I am keen to know if I can install 16GB .

      • +3

        yes, u can mate.

I tested the system, said two slots with 8gm maximum each. so 16gb is possible.

        • nice , thanks mate .

        • .

        • legend, thanks!

        • How accesible are the RAM slots? Both on the underside? My HP has 2 slots inside and 2 underneath, so i could only easily upgrade 2 slots. Getting at the other two meant practically stripping the machine down!

        • +1

This laptop has two slots for RAMs at the bottom. Just unscrew two screws at panel D and remove it. You can see the two slots next to exhausted fan. Easy to assemble.

Good to buy 8gb + 8gb RAMs with 1600Mhz frequency. The 64-bit win 7 good to recognize the 16gb ram in total.

        • Thanks mate, appreciate the info.

  • +1

how much would be the 16 gb ? where is the best place to buy them ?

    • +1

Any computer parts store, they should all be similar prices. Msy, scorptec, centrecom, netplus, umart (just off the top of my head. Or search OZB for ram deals.

Price from MSY is $46 for 1 x 8gb stick of 1333mhz ram oh and brand really makes no difference apart from personal preference.

  • +1

anyone knows whether it can support > 32 GB msata ssd? specs say optional 32 GB.

but nowadays, msata goes up to 256 gb

  • ordered 3 on monday. also my mate ordered 1 same day. checked the dell site for the last 2 days and status was ready for fast shipping. we both got emails last night saying out of stock and it will take 2 weeks. NOT HAPPY AT ALL!

  • A mate ordered one, out of stock, so he was offered the $1400 model at no extra cost. Basically 8GB instead of 6GB ram, and the faster hdd. Both happy as due to the nice price!

  • Mine just arrived after having an ETA of Sep 13(Changed the order after backlit keyboard came back)

Build quality is great so far, not much flex in the keyboard and quick! Now to find some more RAM.

    Thanks for posting this deal

    • Does the backlit keyboard in chiclet mode?

  • I called Dell and asked to switch to the backlit keyboard, which they were fine with. My system arrived today, and I have to say, I'm very happy. Definitely much more sturdy than my old 3500. Just need to chuck in my Samsung SSD and I'll be good to go!

  • Mine came in today, I ordered when this deal came up but dell said they were sold out and said they would send one custom built. Came with the backlit keyboard.

Now just waiting for starthere to get my moneyback form dell
