Don’t gamble your health. Pay the extra and get a certified one for asbestos.

      • +3

Yeah but those aren't as fashionable as the Uniqlo ones

    • +5

This has to be a joke right?

      • -2

Used to be these kinds of comments were a joke, but post Trump/covid, the thickies have reallt taken over here unfortunately. Luckily, it doesn't really stop me from looking for and finding bargains - yet…

    • +3

They will not protect you from asbestos. At all.

    • +24

They're probably fine if you're just watching videos on YouTube about asbestos removal.

For the actual job, though, you want proper gear and proper training. Remember, it's not just your health at risk - it's anyone nearby. I've seen houses getting asbestos removed, and they'll wrap the whole thing in a tent and keep it under a vacuum, just to stop any getting out. In some cases they'll dig up and remove the soil, too.

They do that partly because asbestos is so dangerous, and partly because mesothelioma is such an easy win for any lawyer that takes the case.

It would be much, much cheaper to get an expert in to remove it than to have some compo lawyer take everything you and your family own, plus a chunk of everything you earn from then on.

      • -1

I'd rather stop earning in that case.

    • +7

Also completely off topic. Coles and woolies have these free plastic bags for fruits and veggies to use. How effective are these as an alternative to condoms?

      • +1

Why? Are you too fancy to use a Mars Bar wrapper like the rest of us?

        • +1

Plus you can get a bag of those fun snack size bars. Lasts a few years.

        • +1

Well technically you're more fancy because you need to buy the Mars Bar where as mine is free. LOL

    • If you use this Uniqlo mask when attempting asbestos removal, you might die and it could be the most painful and most horrible experience in your life, before actually dying.

      Mesothelioma is no joke.

  • Hey op, which shop has this item? There is none in sydney cbd, bankstown, hurstville

As someone who still masks, I wouldn't trust these to do a hell of a lot….

    • +1

      Which ones do you use?

      • 3M P2 Masks.

      • +1

Depends on the situation, mostly I wear a reusable mask that has high quality filters in it (not those crappy "pm2.5" rectangle ones, they are useless), but if I'm going into a more high risk venue I'll wear something like a 3M Aura or another type of P2/n95 disposable.

I've either been incredibly lucky or what I do works, wife and I haven't been sick since early-mid 2019 well before all this started.

        • +2

Have you caught covid yet? If not, does that mean when you go to indoor friends or families gatherings, you and wife have a mask on at all times? Or you no longer have a social life, eat out at restaurants etc?

          • +1

@FrugalNotStingy: What he's said isn't necessarily a positive, it's important to get exposed to bacteria and to get the odd virus from time to time. Important to keep your immune system strong. One day he and his wife will get sick.
More healthy to focus on personal health, fitness, not being overweight / obese, etc, rather than living life scared to death of viruses.

            • @R00D: True. I caught covid earlier this year even I was very careful. I avoided going to restaurants, disinfect the stuff I’d touch and wore a mask at all times at public places. I even went to the extreme of didn’t let people come visit my home other than my extended family members.

The mask I wore were certified KF94 and 3M P2 masks. I know I shouldn’t say this but I kind of feel fortunate that I got exposed to the covid virus and it boosted my immunity. I know the immunity from natural exposure will wane over time, but at least I know if I keep my immune system as is, my body would know how to fight covid in future infections.

            • +1

@R00D: Although I agree healthy lifestyle is better than living in unnecessary fear, I don't see how 'not sick" is not positive. I am not a medical professional, but I don't think it is necessary to take on bacteria & heavy virus load to keep your immune system strong. They might not be sick because their immune system is strong enough to repel the odd tiny load of virus here and there, and not being hammered by many different kind of bacteria and viruses all at once / short period of time?

              • @richrichie: Research does suggest young kids that often play outdoors that expose bacteria and the like vs kids that live in ‘sterile’ environments (where their parents always disinfect the floor and around the house) have less allergies, asthma, gut problems and a stronger immune system as grown adults.

                Just saying.

                • @FrugalNotStingy: I hear too many people use this "research of kids playing outside in bacteria are healthier" as an argument for plenty of things that I don't think it's in support of.

There's a difference in bacteria the kids are exposed to when playing in the dirt, and having a sick bus passenger cough in your face, or eating food past the use by date/with mould/off unclean dishes.

Someone wearing something, that has no effect on you, and you get pissed?

You're worse than a Karen. Thanks for the alert lol

        • If they remove their mask and cough on you, will you remove the karen label?

      • -1

"has no effect on me" - wrong. I was not pleased with the various mandatory policies and social friction

Masks with no rating aka surgical masks do nothing but prevent spittle travelling. On the contrary, people touching/fiddling/reusing masks only propogates bacteria getting where it shouldn't be.

Check out during the Spanish flu how many people actually died from bacterial infection, directly correlated to mask use.

I'm a fan of people who have the flu who NEED to be in public to wear a mask… But if you're sick, you should not be in public.
After these last few years, the topic of mandatory medical practice which is ineffective is quite a sore point to me. Don't go telling me it doesn't effect me, because it did and still does

        • Correlation doesn't equal causation. You already know this as an avid science reader. And given there is no longer any support for isolation, staying away from the public is impossible if you don't want to starve and lose your home.

    • +20

But Karens are the ones that hate the masks…

      • +5

        Exactly

        • +1

This so called deal has been posted again and again in this forum. I thought you are not supposed to repeat.

    • Once every couple of months is too much? Maybe you wouldn't notice so much if you posted your own deals rather than whinging about others.

  • +1

Putting aside their usefulness for protecting against COVID (where they're at least better than nothing, and probably easier to convince someone struggling to meet their bills to use than disposables which would be a constant additional drain on their finances), these are amazing for anyone who suffers from seasonal allergies, hayfever, etc. If you have pollen problems, it's absolutely worth picking up some to keep around for whenever you might need them.

    • Studies have proven that they <are not> better than nothing. They have zero efficacy at virus prevention. Like erecting a chain link fence to stop sand from blowing around. Claiming that they are "better than nothing" is dangerous medical misinformation. You are lulling people into a completely false sense of security by making this claim. These products provide absolutely no security against viruses and I wish people like you would stop lying about this.

      • +4

If you have a link to these studies (or even just the DOIs), I would be happy to read them. From a quick search of open-access articles published in reputable academic journals over the last two years (e.g. doi.org/10.3390/ma16030903, doi.org/10.1063/5.0074229, doi.org/10.1007/s11356-021-16847-2, doi.org/10.7326/M23-0570, doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0275376), while cloths masks are certainly of significantly lower efficacy than a tightly fitting N95 mask, they do seem to offer some level of protection. Both in terms of self-protection, and in terms of protecting others from your own droplets should you be infectious but not yet showing symptoms.

        • -2

          Here you go sunshine https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577.short
"Moisture retention, reuse of cloth masks and poor filtration may result in increased risk of infection"
"the finding of a much higher rate of infection in the cloth mask arm could be interpreted as harm caused by cloth masks"

This study published in the BMJ demonstrated that cloth masks had negative efficacy for infection control. In other words wearing a cloth mask was worse than wearing no mask at all.

Of course we know "the science" changed remarkably based on no new evidence in March 2020 when the covid liars got involved. And some people like yourself are still parroting those lies 3 years later.

          • +7

            @jmc787: Interesting read, thanks!

Though I'm not sure if you have read this article in details yet beyond the abstract, the discussion part mentioned about the setting and it is only not recommended for healthcare worker. The comparison in this study was mainly between medical masks vs cloth masks, as the control arm was not ideal (the author put it as limitations). Majority of the participants in the control group wear medical masks, N95, or cloth mask, which actually make the control arm not a good control stastically speaking.

Few interesting points from this article though. It mentions about the diff between rhinovirus vs other influenza virus, where one could be filtered ok with cloth mask. It also mentioned the efficacy depends on the type of cloth masks and noted the types that are designed with multiple layers (i believe this uniqlo one is) could actually have a high virus filtration.

I'd suggest if anyone is interested in this topic to read the discussion section of the article linked above. Some points seem like no brainer after years of pandemic, but keep in mind this study was back in 2015.

            • -1

@richrichie: The public has already made up its mind.

I was in South Wharf DFO Melbourne today, literally thousands of people indoors (and underground) and not a single mask to be seen anywhere.

That's why these face nappies are being dumped for $2, because nobody wants them.

              • +2

@jmc787: Not only south wharf dfo, I barely see any masks on public transport anymore. At this stage of the pandemic (if it is still call as such), I guess everyone should make their own call what's best for them and their surroundings.

I'm actually more interested in people's claims about "studies have found …" and learning more about these studies. And always interesting to know the reasons about people's urge to dissuade people from wearing / buying masks.

                • @richrichie: It's common sense that cloth fabric both absorbs and retains moisture you don't need a study to show that.

It's common sense that cloth masks have zero to negative efficacy for infection control as per the BMJ study findings, however "authorities" chose to collectively abandon common sense during the scamdemic. As a result of this they have lost both their credibility and the trust of the general public. They threw it away forcing healthy people to adopt ineffective and potentially harmful "interventions" that at best had no effect other than pissing people off.

A golf clap to all involved.

                  • +7

@jmc787: Not sure if I follow your reasonings.

Different cloth fabrics absorb and retain moisture at different rate, and the multiple layering can still retain better efficacy than zero. The general idea is I guess, a lot moisture built up will eventually reduce the efficacy of the filtering by the masks, but that does not necessarily mean it did not help at all, especially in normal setting when you dont wear it continuously for a long period like in healthcare setting.

The BMJ study you were referring to has also clearly explained their study limitation, if you read the discussion section. The setting was different (study was for healthcare worker), and their control arm had a major limitation (majority people in the control wear mask), so the negative efficacy you were refering to was actually negative against people that wear other type of masks, not against non-masks wearer.

But anyway, sounds like you have already made up your mind about your claims. Not the kind of discussion that I enjoy (when it has diverged away from the science n more around media/policy/speculations), but thanks for linking an interesting article.

                    • -3

@richrichie: Bangladesh mask study found no efficacy of cloth masks.
Danmask-19 inconclusive, commentary from BMJ "all mitigating measures that have been taken in Denmark to prevent a second wave had no tangible effect on the spread of Covid-19. Those measures included a universal mask mandate."
Catalonia school study inconclusive, found no evidence of efficacy of masking to reduce covid-19 infections
Cochrane Review meta study inconclusive, found no evidence of efficacy of masking to prevent respiratory viruses.

As an interested individual you already know all this, but the masking liars and bullshit artists will always construct some hopium some nitpick some FUD to con people into wasting their money on ineffective face decorations for commercial gain or political motivations, as we all know that there is no health benefit to this nonsense.

If an authority wants to impose a public health intervention then the onus is on that authority to demonstrate the effectiveness of the intervention. The covid scamdemic liars have reversed that burden of proof and say you must prove their intervention doesn't work otherwise we must assume it does. This contortion of logic and perversion of evidence based medicine is the reason that "authorities" have shredded their credibility with the public and will likely never regain it.

                      • -3

@jmc787: Shoutout to all the covid karens negging this comment instead of debating it. The tactic used throughout the scamdemic. We see you.

                      • +2

@jmc787: @richrichie Please don't indulge this person further. I love how your decency of providing DOI for your referenced articles, was not only unreciprocated, but the studies referenced by jmc in response to you, notably the Cochrane Review, has notoriety in being utilised by those with an anti-mask agenda, so much so that the authors felt it necessary to release a statement apologising for the open-ended wording utilised in the conclusion of the study, which resulted in readers being misled by malicious articles citing their study. Very ironic given the circumstances.

                        • -2

@ClaudeElement: Yeah the pro masking liars and bullshit artists have proven to be a very powerful lobby of liars and bullshit artists.

So much so they had to go after the authors of that 2015 BMJ masking study in an attempt to rewrite history instead of coming up with new evidence LOL.

Also, I havent negged any comments in this thread like a child, like you need to. Because I'm not afraid of debating the truth.

      • Do you have links to those studies? Not trying to question your claims, but I'm just curious and would like to read more. And because there seems to be many conflicting studies. Most articles from reputable journals / hospitals seem to indicate some sort of efficacy and are inline with better than nothing. But came across a few blog posts / forums / comments that claim zero efficacy. Would like to compare sources for my own education. Thanks
