  • Yeah I was considering this plan when we get an ev. Figured I could also load shift my dishwasher, washing machine to go off in the early morning too.

Good the fit is uncapped too

Yep, delay everything to that 6 hour window. It's better than just using power / going off grid as in essence you're earning 2c (10c feed in tariff vs 8c off peak rate).

  • The EV Plan requires that you pay for the electricity you use monthly in advance on a Bill Smoothing arrangement using direct debit. Your Bill Smoothing arrangement will be set in accordance with your contract with us.

    • I got charge $130 monthly within days after signing up and is now like a prepay account with live / remaining amount showing on my account balance. Not a fan but as long as the numbers add up and is just a timing difference then i should be fine.

  • +2

Yeah I've been keeping an eye on this one to see where the rates land on 1st July. Provided they're reasonable I'll switch after I get my sweet Origin bill credit.

  • +2

    OVO tings

  • +6

yeah, don't forget you'll have to pay 9c extra everyday of the month for demand charge for every 1kw in half hour, if you accidentally run a 18kw ducted split for only half an hour for one day that month, it can be another $16 extra for that month on top of your usual peak demand.

    • +1

      Huh?

      • They're talking about demand tariffs and how they're measured. A charge in addition to typical supply and TOU/single rate tarrifs you're used to.

Can lead to a surprise on the bill if you don't understand the demand charge.

It's essentially charging you for your maximum load on the grid as well as what you use.

        • I still dont get it.

Im seeing 8c\kwh flat rate (any power source a/c or not).

          Then 55c/kwh peak.

So going half hour over the 8c time, so half hour into peak rate, with an 18kw a/c (assuming a COP of 4), will cost you

          18kw/4 × 0.55c × 0.5hr = $1.24

  • What's the catch? Sure there is, right?

    • +1

I think these rates haven’t had the July increases yet.

      • Might have to come back in July to check.

  • +2

Can you get this plan without an EV?

    • Yep, I joined last month. energymadeeasy read my smart meter and advised it would be the best plan for me.

I'm not convinced yet because was deducted $70 or so in advance and yet to see how my solar feed-in will be credited. But I'm hopeful.

Edit - shit sorry my plan is actually "The Solar Plan" but looks similar on first glance.

  • +1

Is this the rate before or after the coming rate rises? (Noting that you are on a demand plan.)

  • I've been with OVO recently. They are actually quite nice. Initially I was estimated to pay $130 per month with direct debit, but after the first month, when I had $20 in credit (because of solar export) I contacted them via chat and they quickly refunded me the excess amount and changed the monthly direct debit to $20.
OVO support is very nice, with zero waiting time.

  • Any joining or moving away fees?

Also any demand charge for usage between 3 PM and 9 PM?

  • I’m on GloBird’s freeLunch plan. Free between 12-2

  • Are all the tariffs effective July 1st? or they are displaying Old tariffs?
I was got a quote and the rates are lower compared to Simply Energy new tariff on Ausgrid.

  • Is there no way of seeing the actual rates by putting in your postcode like other utility companies?
You have to book a callback?

  • OVO requires that we only can have 5 kW solar panels max. That is strange, because they refund 12c for up to 4000 kw per year, and 7c if more. I have more than 5 kw panels, so OVO is no good for me.

    • In my area this is normal, and a limit of the distributor. 5kw limit for single phase, 10kw for 3 phase. Note: it's a limit on the inverter. It's normal to have ~20% more panels.
FYI, over the past 12 months I've exported about 6400kWh, in Sydney with a 5kW system. So I don't think Ovo would be a good deal for me.

  • I don’t understand how their estimated direct debit cost. Seems like I’ll be overpaying with each direct debit. I only get refund when I leave them?

    Peak rate: 55.88c per kWh
    Off-peak rate: 28.05c per kWh
    Shoulder: 28.82c per kWh
    Solar FiT: 10c per kWh
EV Off-peak rate: 8c per kWh
    Supply charge:

    110c per day

not cheap, need to do calculation vs Powershop EV plan

Are they increasing the price after 1st July?

  • This is a great plan if you have batteries and your inverter supports AC charging. Saving me a ton and I can even run the A/C in the morning.

Set all your Heavy loads during this time including hot water.

    Charge the batteries.

They only ask for a EV rego in your state ;).

Export the solar during the day.

I joined the EV plan last week. Please note that their rates will be revised in August as compared to other retailers. But it makes to schedule washing machine, dishwasher, ev charging, swimming pool filter/cleaning and even your mobile devices like phones, iPads, laptops etc if you have smart plugs. If you have smart air purifiers, that works too. And really comes in handy to reduce cost with heating and air con at least after midnight. Just be prepared to freeze or melt during peak hours…

  • "Electric Vehicle requirement: Must own an electric vehicle."

    Do they enforce this requirement?

    • They ask for EV rego(plate number) at signup. Not sure how they verify ownership of vehivle.

      • Would be interesting given hybrids (non plug in) also have EV rego as per number plate.

      • +1

So goto nearest shopping centre & grab the lic# of any EV?

        • It is worth a try ..

        • My EV got verified at sign up and another one after my account got activated.

  • +1

So ..this isnt sustainable, or make sense.

They offer cheap power at night, which is now the most expensive wholesale power (roughly 4x the 8c cost as of July 1). EVs chew the power, so we are talking MASSIVE losses.

Charging an EV at night (gas/oil and some wind) basically defeats the purpose of an EV. Might as well just burn the oil in a petrol car.

    Then give a $190 credit..

Then encourage you not to charge your EV during the day (as export is worth more than 8c).

No part of it makes business sense…

So Im guessing they will pre charge, accumulate $$ and a customer base (looks good on the books), then reality kicks in…they will go bust and you wont see your funds / credits ever again.
    Geez I love modern economics.

This is basically ponzi power..Get on, then get off early. Dont get caught with them holding your bags.

The alternate has to be …as of July… all this goes away..

    • I'm skeptical of it too. But in reality, there are fat margins I reckon. When I inquired they said bill smoothening can be reviewed (and credited back) anytime (Eg. every 3 months and doesn't have to wait 12 months)

BEWARE! I signed up a few weeks ago. Was quoted rates from their website, and confirmed the same in email from them.
Once my account was setup, I noticed the rates were different. They said they would update the rates in my account. I chased them several times after which they eventually stated the rates on their website and quoted in writing were incorrect and wouldn't be honoured. I am still trying to resolve the matter.

    • How have you gone with this? Any updates?

    • That's bizarre! What happened in the end?

    • I went to the ombudsman against Lumo for this exact issue. They went back and checked the voice recording… I won.. make sure you have the date/ time.

  • Changed back to $100 credit only

  • +1

It’s $100 credit now but seems impossible to signup for the EV plan. No time’s available to schedule a call back and no way to select and signup for the EV plan when I put my address in.

    • You need to keep checking their call back page. There was a few available slots end of July a few days ago but seems to be all taken now.

  • +1

Just signed up and looks like a fantastic deal, but I really don't understand why they have referral links if you can't actually sign up online (or at all, since there doesn't appear to be any appointments). Very weird way of doing things.

  • +1

I finally got signed up today. Had to wait 2 weeks for them to call me as scheduled. However my phone blocked their number as suspected spam!
So frustrated that I emailed them a complaint and they called back, and was finally signed up.

It's impossible to talk to call them over the phone, as everything just redirects you or goes to voicemail. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone that needs customer service to be more accessible.

But the EV rates are too good to pass up. This is what I'm getting for SE QLD:
    Peak:
    29.09c/kWh inc. GST
    Peak Demand:
    15.24c/kW/day inc. GST
    Solar feed-in tariff:
10c/kWh excl. GST * if applicable
    EV Off-peak rate (between 00:00 and 06:00):
    8.00c/kWh inc. GST
    Supply charge:
    115.50c/day inc. GST

Don’t forget to add your referral link to the referrals section at the top of this page

      • cheers, have done now!

  • Are you able to stack the $100 welcome credit with the referreal $12/month?

    • +1

No, they don't stack. So basically you save an extra $20 off if you use the referral code

      • In that case, you can sign up via econnex (currently $70 on CR) and you'll also get the $100 welcome credit?

  • Rates seem competitive, thanks OP.
Welcome credit has dropped to $100.
Better off using the referral links above and getting $120 credit and supporting a fellow OZbargainer.
