Pilot Seagull Movement 1963 Chronograph Sapphire Quartz 40mm US$27.33 (~A$41) Delivered @ Men Watches Store Aliexpress

80

I'm unsure, given the price and earlier discussions if this can be regarded as a Seagull, a knock-off of a Sea-Gull, or a knock-off of a knock-off of a Sea-Gull. That it is quartz goes some way to answering that…

Whatever way, it's paypallable so maybe worth a punt if the 40mm is O.K.

There is a choice of green Nato, black leather or silver mesh for a couple of $$ more (AU$38.72)

Why does this look like a knock off of a knock off

    • Wait until you see the photos.

On the bright side, it should weigh less than the primitive mechanical models winging their way over and a far cleaner dial, even if the purloined-looking feedback does echo and refer to the look of the 38mm actual seagull movement offered as an alternative in nify1's post.

Wow, this 'homage' is a compliment to the original knock-off of the HK-based ex-employee.

FYI - The case is alloy.

    • Probably some crappy pot metal.

That it is quartz goes some way to answering that…

Nothing against the OP, but it's a really bad answer.

Chrono second hand becomes ticking second hand. Normally it's either static or sweeps when measuring. The right subdial is in 30 sec, instead of 60. Static, not sweeping second.

Way too far from the original aesthetic.

IMO, the very point of 1963 is the mechanical column wheel, that's why the genuine variants I linked on the last deal are bargains despite their cost.

Owning the mechanical manual wind version of this watch, the pictures in the listing look to be accurate. The left subdial is the sweeping seconds hand while the red main seconds hand is used for chrono seconds. The right subdial is the minute timer - up to 30 minutes.
However, when you look at the pictures in the reviews, it looks to be only a 24 minute timer. Doubt it's a 24hr measurement dial. And you can't tell which second hand is used for what. Even the picture showing what each hand is and the button functionality contradicts itself.

      • The subdial hands look too big. At a glance, it isn't obvious which 'end' of the hands to read from.

      • (I had a look at mine exactly this version, buried deep in storage box)

You're right, I got left and right subdial mixed up. Perhaps I should put mine back into the rotation … I remember it being crazy accurate, but at some point got sick of hand winding and moved on to a Beijing lol

Reddit says the quartz left subdial is the minute chrono and the right is a 24 hr complication but in 30 detents. Highly confusing.

Actually looks quite good despite the differences outlined by Fullhalter.

But I guess most people would love to have a living dinosaur with all the history on their wrists. Personally I don't mind the quartz but the mechanical chrono movement is the real heart and soul of the 1963 watches.

at least you know its suss with this one…a 100% ali-shitter.

  • Oh dear:

    "Customer Reviews (30)

Still, at least it hasn't disappeared entirely, however I suggest someone is feeling the heat.

I may query why Aliexpress is allowing a known counterfeit page top stand but barring comments from somewhere aware of the scam.

    • Can you give us some context as to what is happening? Did you buy this item and it was not as described or something else?

      • I bought this item, expecting a cheap imitation quartz chronograph, five days after buying into the other fake offer in the description text of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/782303, wanting a 38mm display back.

The watch supplied from the first purchase, although great to look at (Champagne dial compared to white), didn't have a display back, and came with the usual plastic lock a quartz would - and **immediately" offered me a "stop-watch" function without a hint of winding. When dropped a short distance, the sweep hand fell off, and when opening the case, the 24 hour indicator hand also fell off.

I waited a few days, hoping this was the quartz (this "deal") and the mechanical was still on the way - although Aliexpress had marked the ~$120 unit as delivered.

I was to be disappointed. The "chronograph" hands were badly misaligned with the datum with piece of bastardised plastic geared **date* movement that, depending on the time of day set, wouldn't run long enough to time a soft-boiled egg.

My dispute claim with AliExpress was refused almost immediately with a "check with your neighbours" (No, you come and do that!) as I had claimed the first as "not delivered", rather than "counterfeit", as what I had ordered hadn't arrived.

When the second unit arrived I did attempt a "counterfeit" claim, however such a claim on Aliexpress wouldn't proceed unless the refund sought was altered to the price minus the trader's shipping costs and with a demand that the item be return to the same spiv that sold it for their assessment.

I understand, though I may be wrong, that it would be unlawful to return a counterfeit item.

When the second unit, the white one with better alignment arrived it had the same movement - and both items from erstwhile different sellers had the exact same item number and both were drop-shipped from Yto Global of Short St, Auburn NSW.

What really peeves me off is that for a couple of dollars more, an Epson, Citizen or Seiko movement - even a clone, could have been put in these cases, which are a fairly decent SS construction and the metal/ceramic dials are well made - and then a (embossed as) Sunon Pe60 plastic geared movement that wouldn't be out of place in a $10 paper-labeled pot-metal shocker mutated into a "chronograph" movement for short-period demonstration purposes, and shipped out to the detriment of the reputation of those Chinese manufacturers such as Pagani Design, Skmei and such, with the latter admittedly building analogue units with a plastic case not allowing the movement to be replaced after the gears wear out, but doing a blinder in digital units and making no pretence as to what they are offering.

The page for the $40 is still valid, although for some reason not accepting feedback or comments from Australian users. The page for the $120 offer https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/782303 had been removed, as has the alternate offered by nifty1 in the comments.

In some ways I feel for the $40 seller - their description is as shonky as an election promise and the mechanism in the unit they offer a piece of dreck, but it could have been a presentable homage if presented as such with a different choice of cheap quartz chronograph movement - or even as just a "Quartz watch".

Still - I suspect it may have a Baldric style "what do you do when you discover a warehouse full of old watchcases" cunning plan.

  • What would you know - this one was the closest to honest the oxygen thief running this scam managed to get.
