But, but, but… they’re not Eneloops!

Are you even allowed to post these on OzBargain?

  • +1

Weirdly, Eneloops are not rated as being among top 3 in that wirecutter article. Probably because of the price.

      • That article is written by someone who doesn't seem to know how referral/affiliate links even work.

Wirecutter usually link to Amazon so they get a small commission when users click through their referral link to make a purchase.
Nextdesk didn't have that referral system in place - you can hardly blame Wirecutter for reaching out to try and get something setup ! The article is framing this as "pay for review" but it's really "pay commission per sale", a lot less nefarious than they're making out.

When Wirecutter eventually switch their recommendation to another desk, the article makes light work of the thousand dollar cheaper price !!

Yep these are mostly junk. Went to charge one last night and dead despite hardly any use. Old GP batteries used for at least 5yrs in a baby monitor still charging fine

    • +3

      My Envelops can't be charged.

    • so they sent ideal for everything

      What does this mean?

  • +4

long time ozbargain user - Damaged Dingo - gave this less than glowing feedback for these battteries

      • +1

I bought some of these in AAA about a year ago. They are awful at holding a charge. My envelops and IKEA batteries are way better.

  • Excuse my rookie question but can you charge these with Eneloops charger?

    • +3

      Yes.

      • +2

Wait, we don’t know if that charger supports AAA size :) but yes any charger for AAA batteries will charge them.

        • +2

          :)) Thank you

      • Cheers :)

    • +1

Any charger for 1.2v Ni-MH will charge them, the chargers rely on resistance to judge the charge rate, but is one charger better at prolonging a batteries life over another? … dunno!

  • Not a bad price for the 20 pack.
I wonder if these AAA even get close to the rated 1100mah capacity?

    • Nope, doesn’t feel like it.

      • +1

the wirecutter review reports that they tested as having 1100mAh capacity. that's after 3 cycles of discharge/recharge. -but wirecutter is apparently a paid review. so take it with a grain of salt.

  • Any good non rechargeable AAA?

    • +1

I'd just go Amazon Basics for any non-rechargeable battery tbh. 100 pack for $35 atm, but could drop for the upcoming prime day.

      • +1

Cheers. Will look out for that.

      • +1

Yup, have been testing, excellent value.

There's youtubes that explain how the cheapest alkaline far outperforms the best rated heavy duty battery, the Amazon ones test at 1.65v … you won't see many fresh batteries higher than that, the AH is never stated with a disposable, voltage and timing the time to flat (1.5v) at a certain amp drain is your only way of knowing.

36 Pack AAA High-Performance Alkaline Batteries $19 or cheaper with regular shipment deal.

My mate reckons that these EBLs are sub-part batteries especially compared to the eneloops…. can somebody confirm please?

    • +1

      Confirmed, see my comment below.

    • +1

      Confirmed. Waste of money.

    • Sub-Part … like a peryscope? or a rubber? … or a nuclear wessel?

  • +3

Bought a pack of 20 AAAs in 2021 for ~ $29 and they are ok for their price, but not as good as Eneloops or IKEA’s ones. My main “complaint” is that EBL claims them to be low self discharge — well maybe they’re, but after 2 years of use I know I have to charge them again every time first before start using, as their kung fu LSD is not that strong (or rather weak in context of LSD).
Would I buy them again? Yep, still better than non-rechargeable batteries for me.

  • Bought them previously, not worth it.

  • +5

These things are pretty bad; Have over 100, had about a 25% failure rate. Also, less than half met their advertised capacity.
Hard sell, especially when PKcell are usually a comparable price.

And WireCutter? OzBargainsers don't care much about paid reviews. Bitten toooooo many times.

    • +1

Yup, don't trust wirecutter … ask project farm to test stuff, it'll be tested right!

  • These are fine in kids toys and other things that aren't super important. Don't hold charge well when not in use but I'm not that fussed if I have to charge them before using. We need so many batteries and I'm not buying eneloops for a toy that could be lost.

    • I have a stack of alkaline batteries that came free with torches and other devices. I make the kids take these on camps as the torches are typically worth less than a good rechargeable.

Worst performing rechargeable AAA batteries I have every purchased. Power runs out much quicker than any battery I have ever used. When freshly charged these claimed 1100mah batteries give 1.5 hours of power compared to 11 hours of power for the same device using 800mah Eneloops.
It’s a Neg from me as I have two lots that both perform badly. First lot I purchased the other were a gift for Christmas.

  • +1

BUYER BEWARE - these are terrible batteries.
I bought a bunch of these 800 mAh and 1100 mAh versions for general household use about 18 months ago. The majority of them either no longer hold a charge or clearly hold a small fraction of the charge they used to.

Absolute junk, dont waste your money. I realised my mistake soon after and bought some eneloops. Eneloops are working just fine to this day so its not me, its these batteries.

Save yourself the annoyance of having to get rid of this junk later.
