FX Tilting Bike Carrier - 4 Bikes $50 + $10 Shipping @ Rola

170

Straight forward car bike carrier with a good price tag ($50 +$10 delivery) you can also get the 3 bike version for the same price too. Was $188.

Wife can’t physically put the kids bikes on the roof rack while I’m away, so seems like a better option for her to use this instead.

No indication on the website how long the deal will last.

Bought first and am asking questions later (as is tradition)…So…

How exactly does this attach to the towbar?

EDIT: OK I found a site
    https://roofrack.com.au/product/rola-fxt4-4-bike-tilt-towbal…

It says "Mounting plate fits to tow bar tongue, can remove bike carrier leaving mounting plate on tow ball. This is a 4 bike carrier, tilts down allowing access to your boot/hatch."

This is the same design as the FX rola (FX3T), Supercheap autos version and even 99 bikes discontinued these for $60 last month (The Pacific A Frame - af3b) and hundreds more. They go between the tongue and towball and are secured with the towball (sold separately).
You won't fit 4 bikes on these as the bike carriers which do fit 4 bikes have adjustable holders and straps for the bikes (Thule hangon 4 but hundreds of models of these still exist)
These can even start to sway after use after a short period of time
The most secure bike carriers actually have receivers and don't go on tongues of cars but the thule is secure.

    $4550 worth of bikes..
    $50 bike rack.
    Insurance covers $250.
    Not sold.. Go Thule.

yeah, I must care nothing about your bikes to use something like this.

    • I'm throwing off the verge kids bikes on there. $50 sounds great.

Then buy one with the safety straps which most have. The straps connect to the top of the boot. This model doesn't have it.

    • What are you talking about?
Not taking the piss, I just want a bit more information

Most of these types of racks come with a safety strap to wrap around the boot incase they fail. We're talking a $50 bike rack here..
        Example:
        https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-3-clamp-single-p…

They do fail and people lose all their bikes especially with the weight of 4 cheap bikes. They start to sway also over time and the straps help with this. It's just the bottom bracket design.

The repairs on the bikes coming off going 100km/h down the freeway would be either more than the bike and 10x the price of the bike carrier. A wheel alone is $170.. an ODI grip is $55.

        • Ah ok. Understood
          Thankyou

          • @PlaunsJanus: Insurance companies are smart too.. the only way to get your bike covered when on a car is to take out general portable contents insurance which is additional to home and contents insurance. This only covers $1000. So really they don't cover you at all..
By the time you pay the extra premium and excess claim they've covered you for $300.
This is why you can spend $600-$1200 on a good bike rack.

        • The repairs on the bikes coming off going 100km/h down the freeway

Damn, if your rack and 4 bikes comes off whilst you're driving down the freeway then the cost of the bikes is going to be the least of the issues. There was probably a massive pileup as a result !!!!

  • I'm still trying to figure out how this works and can't find any decent links lol. Anyone have anything?

    • +1

think the end part goes where the towball goes. then the towball goes on top screwing it down.

    • +1

I've got one from repco. You take your tow ball off and attach the bottom plate which isn't shown in the pic. The tow ball goes back on securing it in position. Then the bike rack is connected on. This site shows better pics. https://roofrack.com.au/product/rola-fxt4-4-bike-tilt-towbal…

    • Great, thanks for the replies! Will sort out when it arrives :)

  • Just saw this deal, now it’s only $25 crazy prices :-)

    • What the. Half of what I paid. Installed mine today. Had to the trim the plate to fit properly. Not sure if the tongue on my towbar is the standard size or not.
