HP Color LaserJet M479dw + Box of FujiFilm A4 Multipurpose Copy Paper $605.99 + Shipping @ MediaForm

150

My Brother MFC-L8690CDW failed over the weekend, bought during COVID and didn't even last over 3 years. I have another L8900 in the office that is also not printing nicely. So decided to switch to another brand. HP seems quite potent in the field of laser printer, but generally more expensive than Brother. Came across MediaForm is doing a EOFY special for $605.99 (with a box of paper). Freight was reasonable (for Sydney Metro) as well.
Elsewhere, ShoppingExpress is $695 and OW is $1119. Delivery was fast, no issues at all and the new printer is already up and running.

    HP is pricier toner

    • I have a similar model (M477) and use cheapo third-party toner. I'd imagine its available for this model too.

We bought a HP LSR PRO M283FDW MFC PRINTER from officeworks for $449 at the start of lockdown and its been so super stable and super connected, the automatic document feeder scanner is awesome. Fwiw the starter ink mine came with is still going strong.

    • Out of curiosity, how much do you print per month?

      • +1

        None.

  • We had half a dozen of the 377 models of these, physically they look very similar and they've all had premature failure. Creasing paper, smudge marks down the page etc.

  • bought during COVID and didn't even last over 3 years

Mine (L-3770CDW) only lasted 13 months. Brother bought up a bunch of crap capacitors during covid and they had a lifetime of approximately 10% of the normal brand. So a lot of brother printers had early deaths due to these capacitors. Easy to replace them, but since no one does board-level repairs these days, they simply replace the whole motherboard costing hundreds. Mine was done under warranty and took 6 weeks(!), but a lot of people out of warranty got massive repair bills for replacing a few <$1 capacitors.

The problem is, most printer manufacturers treat their customers like crap. If anyone know of one who doesn't, let me know.

Fuji Xerox used to be ok, but they exited the consumer end of the market and went mid/high end business only.

    • A lot of the low end Fuji Xerox's are re-badged Brother…if you dig deep enough into the drivers, it's got Brother written all over it.

      i.e. M285z, M385z, the newer 4020SD comes to mind. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

      • I'm talking about the older FX models like the C525, C1190FS, CM205 fw.

  • A box of paper is too heavy! I rather to pay $50 less and without the paper!

  • I purchased HP MFP M428FDW (mono version). I am very happy with it. I have been using it since 2020. The original toner is still going and on its last leg. I print very little so maybe it is still going. I do a lot of documentation scanning. That automatic feeder + edit before save functions are amazing.

If you have a student email or corporate discount, you can get HP toner at a pretty reasonable price. I think I paid around 130 for normal toner.

    • these have drm up the ass though

i think there are 3,000 pg non original carts for like $50 but you have to remove the chip off your OEM cart to get it to go and it will always say "toner low" throughout the lif of the cart

    • from hp direct?

      • Yes - HP direct.

  • like buying a car, and it coming with a short-term spare tyre

  • I was with HP for the last decade or so but with their new anti-consumer changes I moved to brother I don't think I will go back to HP as its very very expensive ink and removing 3rd party support

I have this printer at work and after 1 year it's having nothing but issues with connectivity.

    • It's only the wifi, and seems to be fine if you power it off overnight. It's the only real issue I've had with half a dozen of them, but it sure is a doozy.
