TP-Link Archer VR1600v/VX220-g2v Modem/Router for New and Returning Broadband Customers $49.50 (Normally $99) @ Dodo

72

Modem offer: 50% off new modem for new and returning customers only. Dodo modem price is normally $99 upfront. Offer ends 31 Jul 2023.

My 5yr old Netcomm nf18acv modem start playing up recently. I'm looking for a new router and came across with this deal.
I asked Dodo support which model they would offer and was told it would be TP link VR1600 or Vx220.

Dodo currently have $10 first month for
25 Mbps plan. I was thinking if I should join Dodo for a month for $10 and then switch to another ISP after that so that I can keep the modem? Or should I just purchase TP-Link Archer VR2100V for $187 from Officeworks to save all the hassles as I'm quite happy with Aussie Broadband at the moment.

TP Link VR1600 router is actually pretty mediocre device, only Wifi AC 1600. Not good reviews on Product Review and Choice.com with users citing that the firmware is locked down by the ISP with features like bridge mode being disabled.

Not worth the trouble just to shave a few bucks off an ancient modem router.

Its a steaming pile of shite. Constant wifi dropouts and slow page load speads even with ethernet. I got this modem from TPG. Fortunately they let you put it into bridge mode. Doing so fixed the problems fixed immediately.

Mine overheated and burnt out the LAN ports/chip, couldn't even bridge it lol.

I do miss the ability to set VLANs with my Asus now though.

      • I second your post. The wifi is abysmal, the ethernet I didn't have issues with, but about a year ago I put it in bridge mode to service a TP Link AX73 - suffice to say, things have been rock solid since.

Also, looking into the modem itself, you might find some interesting stuff. It's been discovered that TPG has CWMP enabled by default. Personally, I don't like any ISP having backdoor access into my crap, no matter how "harmless" it may seem.

        • Yeah I knew this from the start when I couldn't get root access to the router to upgrade the firmware.

I was lazy but recently just got one of those travel routers for the time being and bridged the modem to that.

Pick up for used Telstra Smart 2 modem router in FB market place for $20 and it would be must better option

    • How do u use a Telstra model with Dodo?

      • +1

        utsc knows

      • +1

Should be just plug and play. It was for me with Superloop and Aussie Broadband on Teltra router.

        • But you will need to configure the user name and password for each ISP

          • @mynameisborat: I didn't need to do that. Just rebooted the router and it autoconfigured.

          • +1

@mynameisborat: no you don't, superloop, ABB etc use Dynamic IP so not required it's only generally those using PPPoE which is old school

      • Plug and Play with the vast majority of providers
Some ISP provide a password (FTTN) then you need to login via the web interface and enter the login details provided by ISP

  • I'm surprise Dodo still exist till this day, who are they servicing and who is supporting them? lol

    • I'm not sure about their internet service but I was with Dodo electricity and gas for many years and never had any problem with their service. Their online chat are always helpful.

      • ahh so they survive through providing other services haha

I got their router on this deal, they provide tp link vx220 router which has wifi 6. No issues so far and has a very good range. I don't need to use an extender. I've scheduled it to restart every 3 days, just to refresh the connection.

    • So are you planning to stay with Dodo?
Does vx220 have a phone port?

      • They are offering good discount, I'll stay with them for a few months then switch to another provider.

      • +2

Yep, it has phone port for the voip service. it's a decent wifi 6 router.

        • I have a hobby number on an old phone to receive texts forwarded to my main phone. Not sure if the phone port here can does this?

<sings> "Dodo! Dodo! Internet that dies!"

  • All the nbns want some $300 New Development Charge for me to connect they can get f@#$$&.

    • That payment is to NBNCo to run the fibre directly to your premise (fttp) or from nearest node to your premise (fttn). There is no avoiding this payment unless you avoid NBN for 5+ years and if your lucky your property no longer gets flagged as ‘New’ - that loophole might be fixed now though

      • New development Charge is not just for FTTP, it is any of the MTM NBN. It's for any house built from 2015 onwards, it requires this payment to obtain a LOCID.

        • Yeah well no nbn for me then I'm not paying that crap.

          • @paulaus: Fair enough. Depending on your needs. 5G can be perfectly serviceable for a home connection.

dont get that shit, if you really want something like that, go on FB marketplace and can get cheaper or even free

  • I think this modem only works for certain configurations and thus it’s a lucky draw if it works. Lol

  • I have been using the vr1600v for years and it’s been perfect I just turned over to Superloop 1000/50 plan and runs like a dream. I have 0 reasons to upgrade this router

    • for the average user it'll do the job, just never pay for the device

  • Maybe not relevant but I received this modem router when I signed up with Kogan. I got very poor speeds both up and down. Luckily I still have the old MyRepublic technololor modem router and my speeds went back to normal which is very close to 100/20. I have churned with almost every ISP out there when they have promos and always used the MYR unit. So impressed I bought another one as backup from FB Marketplace.

  • What internet do you have OP? I used to use this when I was on FTTB.

If you're on FTTP/FTTC you dont need a modem like this anymore. I just recently upgraded from this modem to a Wifi6 Mesh and the difference is night and day.

I never realised how terrible this modem is until I moved from an apartment into a house.

    • I have HFC nbn. I use VoIP so the router will need a phone port which has limited my choice.

      • fair enough…

  • anyone think this is the ISP trying to get rid of existing stock, do not pay money for this modem/router if it's free ok but there are far better out there, especially off marketplace & gumtree

  • With many WFH users requiring SIP phones (think 3CX), just note that the VR1600v has SIP functions that will likely interfere and can't be completely disabled. The VR1600 is the non-voice option.
