good value for dashcam, paid same price for 128gb last year

    • +1

My CCTV cameras only take 128GB max.
      Seems a weird limit

      • +1

Its to do with the reader.

By the way. How old is the CCTV? The newer the device usually the bigger capacity it can read/write to.

      • Same, it drives me nuts. Bah!

      • +1

        EUFY HOMEBASE 1?

      • Sometimes it's a card reader issue (SD was limited to 4gb, SDHC and SDXC extended that) but yours sounds like a connection limitation, likely 22bit LBA

It's something I remember keenly because if you tried to install windowsxp with the original disc, and had a drive connected larger than 128gb it would corrupt it

    • Are these for a Blackvue cam? I've got a 900x but not sure what's the biggest capacity SD card they will take

  • got 2.

  • wasnt there a bargain posted for the blackvue dash cam and then the person who posted wrote that the sd card was endro 64gb for $50 ….

    found it

  • Anyone unlucky enough to claim warranty on these (cards from US)? How easy/hard was it?

    • should be easy with Amazon

  • +2

Before anyone asks. Yes you can use it for a nintendo switch. But spend less for the non endurance card instead.

    • This. For Switch/gaming use, just get an EVO Plus card, it'll perform faster. Zero reason to get an Endurance card unless you're using it for something that is constantly writing data — such as a dashcam or CCTV surveillance cam, or perhaps Home Assistant.

  • Thanks OP. Got 1

  • What do people use for micoSD card readers these days?

My USB 3.0 readers seem to be rate limiting the newer EVO PLUS cards. When transferring a single large file they won't read at faster than 82MB/s and writing is limited to 65MB/s. Using NTFS as this is faster than exFAT in Windows machines. The EVO PLUS cards are rated for significantly faster than this. I am seeing little improvement over the earlier Red/Orange EVO PLUS cards.

buy the samsung card + reader if you want to get the full speed of the card

      • That's what I have been looking for. I thought I might be able to buy the reader by itself, but it doesn't appear that is the case. Unfortunately I have just bought a few cards without the reader.

It appears that Amazon is one of the only that sells the combination.

Just my observation, these 136 layer-120MB/s and 92 layer-160MB/s cards can get to hand burning temperature in that Samsung brand, overclocked UHS-1 Micro SD reader. Especially the 92 layer ones

High writing temp can be good for NAND data longevity, it's just not super comfortable to use. For anything that requires that speed I'd get SSD if possible

          • @YRT:

High writing temp can be good for NAND data longevity,

That sounds interesting. Never heard that before. Got any other sources for that?

            • @outlander: I can only assume he meant to say "can't".

Based on comments below I could be wrong.

          • @YRT: do you have the samsung card reader and observe this heat?

High writing temp can be good for NAND data longevity, it's just not super comfortable to use.

            what you mean by this?
isn't high temp bad for for most stuff, why it is good for NAND data longevity

why not it's just not super comfortable to use?

@pinkybrain: Yep, I have that pro plus / reader combo, it runs about as hot as other uhs 2 card readers I have. They are all around 150mb/s

I intended to use this combo as RPI boot drive. What I found was that a 10gb file copy would make it too hot to touch easily 65c+. I think the temp can damage the plastics of usb port, so I gave up this idea

And yes, NAND should be programmed hot and stored cool. Search 'nand temperature data retention' for more info in this topic.

              https://www.partitionwizard.com/clone-disk/is-ssd-good-for-l…

              • @YRT: so it only gets hot if it is single file that 10gb?
what about if it is smaller files that total = 10gb, does it also get hot?

why you boot OS from usb instead of microsd card slot on the RPI?

So are you still using the samsung sdcard reader or useless?
seem like it was the only way to get full speed on these cards
but if the reader is too hot to use (and potential damage to the usb port), it might not be worth taking the risk,

                • @pinkybrain: too many questions, you better get one and see for yourself lol

An analogy would be have a supercar that runs out of fuel in 100km. Is it fast? yes it is. is it suitable for most people? it depends ;)

                  • @YRT:

too many questions, you better get one and see for yourself lol

                    yeah sorry,
if you can answer the question it would save people from wasting their money…

So are you still using the samsung card reader or not?

Also the high temp only occurs when copying large files or many smaller files too?

  • Are these considered better than the Sandisk ones?

    • no idea but
many people do like samsung microsd..

  • Just in time for my new Reolink video doorbell that is on the way ….

  • This is also Samsung 256GB micro SD card for $26 but not sure how it compares to this deal with read/write speeds?

    • Different use case

    • +1

The EVO Plus is faster than the Endurance cards. Endurance cards are for special applications that involve the constant writing of data which would otherwise wear out a "regular" card much faster than normal: dashcams, surveillance cams and Home Assistant, for example.

For everything else, including for use in game consoles such as the Nintendo Switch, get an EVO Plus card, it's both cheaper and faster.

      • So it sounds like I can replace my current 32GB micro SD card in my Blackvue with this one? How does Blackvue recognise it.. I think I have to copy across the folder structure including config files for it to work?

        • +1

The Endurance card (not the EVO Plus) would be suited to your dashcam, yes. But make sure you check that your Blackvue can actually use a 256GB card, a lot of older dash cams can't and they max out at supporting 128GB cards, or sometimes even 64GB. They literally won't recognise and can't use a larger capacity card.

I wouldn't bother copying across the folder structure, I'd just put in the new card and tell the dashcam to format it.

  • Paid $55.30 for this just recently…..bought another at $36.56 for the third camera

  • can someone please confirm if this works on "VIOFO A129 PLUS DUO 2K"?

    • I used a similar card in the 4K pro version of the VIOFO A129.

  • Now $52.55

  • Got mine today. The sd card was destroyed. Looks like someone had tried to cut it out of the packaging and failed badly. The sd card was sliced in 1/2.

I have put in a return.
