Half Life: Alyx
Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

As founders of a fledgling resistance, you’ve continued your clandestine scientific activity—performing critical research, and building invaluable tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.

Every day, you learn more about your enemy, and every day you work toward finding a weakness.

Oh wow might finally try playing a PC VR game through my quest 2. Only heard good things about this.

    • +3

it's amazing, enjoy the experience! I recommend playing with wireless headphones, if you have any, to get really immersed.

    • +5

Can recommend, I'm doing my first run through HL:A on my Quest 2 and it's first true AAA experience I've had in VR. The production quality is a step above the rest imo.

    • +3

Did a playthrough on my Quest 2 and it was a fantastic game. Obviously VR games are lacking in the resolution department but this game has been done so well with lighting and controls that it is very immersive. It seems everything has been thought about with regard to controlling a VR game.

      • +2

Sorry but VR games aren't lacking in the resolution department - your Quest 2 is.

        • Quest 2 isn't exactly lacking in res either, just in CPU and GPU power.

Alyx in a Quest 2 is amazing.

@GandalfTheCheap: And this comes from the pc in this instance doesn't it?

            • +2

@Spendmore: Yes you play half life alyx on a gaming PC, and connect it to the Quest 2 with fast WiFi 5 (same room with ethernet cable from router to PC) or tethered with a USB cable.

Quest 2 by itself plays some expensive short gimmick type games with very basic visuals.

Quest 2 with a gaming PC plays mind-blowing realistic experiences that often go on sale cheap in steams sales and bundles.

it was a good tech demo for it's time, but after the initial familiarization bit, it's just non-stop jump scares for 5 hours. some call that "immersive".

      • yeah very annoying, good game otherwise.

    • +2

sadly its the only truly amazing VR game and after so many years of it being out one has to ask why more haven't been done to this standard .

  • +5

omg for that price its a steel this is by far still one of the best VR FPS games you will ever play. If you still haven't played this in VR you 100% should get this now at 35 bucks…. Its not just for half life fans either you can enjoy this even if you don't know the story behind it.

    Half Life: Alyx $35.18

Wow I see what's going on here:

    35.18 = 3x5x1x8 = 120

    120 = 1+2+0 = 3.

    Half Life 3 Confirmed.

is there a generally accepted best cost vs quality VR equipment to use for games like this? or are we yet to see any decent well priced VR gear? Haven't looked at anything VR related in a couple years. I guess there's GPU to consider as well

Meta Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop. Can get on Facebook marketplace for $300ish and VD is ~$20

Need a decent PC to run it, google the minimum specs but I have no trouble with an RTX3060TI

      • To add to this; run a hotspot from your PC and connect the Quest directly to that to reduce latency.

Someone also reported that if you connect your phone to the hotspot first, it increases the maximum link speed? Not sure if true

      • +1

Is VD really needed? Air link (Meta inbuilt PCVR) does the job too

        • VD is superior, especially with the new upscaling changes they've made

    • shame this is not on ps store
it would be best on psvr2 i recon and if you already have ps5 - its your best bet

      • A PC would surely be better than a ps.

        • psvr2 is many times better then q2 - if you are starting from scratch its better and cheaper
sure it has a cable but apart from that everything else is better

          • @botchie: Yeah it i have heard good things about the psvr2.

  • Waiting for steam completely bundle

  • Alyx is a tempting buy now that you don't actually need VR to play it any more.

    • After playing it in VR there is no other way i would want to play, i just wish all games came out in VR now.
