I’ve been in the market for a Kindle Scribe for some time to get the writing features and larger screen for PDFs etc and I happened to notice it’s 20% off the 16GB model with basic pen for Prime members.

They also have the various combinations with the premium pen and 32GB or 64GB on sale as well.

  • Read and write as naturally as you do on paper – Features the world’s first 10.2” 300 ppi glare-free Paperwhite display and included Basic Pen.
  • Take notes within millions of titles in the Kindle Store – Handwrite thoughts on sticky notes in your favorite book with the included Basic Pen. Notes are automatically organised by book in one place, so you can browse, review, and export them via email.
  • Create notebooks, journals, and lists – Choose from four brush types to write and sketch with. Use the lasso select tool to resize, move, cut, copy, or paste your handwritten notes. Convert and send your handwritten notebooks as text to your contacts.
  • Review documents and take notes digitally – Import documents using the Kindle app, the desktop web browser, or send directly from Microsoft Word (Microsoft 365 subscription required). Review and markup PDF files or create sticky notes in Microsoft Word and other compatible documents. Export documents via email.
  • Read and write comfortably day or night – Whether immersing yourself in a non-fiction book, or reviewing a document, Kindle Scribe has a large, high-resolution display, adjustable warm light, auto-adjusting front light, and larger font sizes for a personalised experience.

Isn’t the Prime sale thing just around the corner? I’d wait to see if it’ll go lower.

    • +1

This is the early prime day deal not just a random sale it seems?

      • +1

I'll be disappointed if this is the final deal. I was hoping for something more like 30%

  • +2

I just want the Fire tablets to be available in Australia already.

    • It looks interesting, I never knew there was such a device. Why don't you just purchase one from Amazon US (currently on special but only 64G is available)?

      • They don’t ship to AU.

    • +1

They're garbage. Don't bother. I imported two for my kids and the software is really glitchy, poorly maintained, parental controls easily bypassed.

  • +1

Bought one of these for my wife last year and she loves it.

  • So it’s a kindle with bigger screen and pen?

    • +1

Essentially yes. But the screen is textured so it feels very much like paper and the pen does not require charging.

      • +1

Oh. I gotta try out a display one

  • Looks cool but no palm rejection?

    • You don’t really need it as only the pen can write on the screen. It doesn’t work like a normal capacitive touch screen like on an iPad.

  • +1

i heard you have to be connected to the internet to use this, is that correct?

    • I believe it will require internet to finish the registration to bind you amazon account with it, but reading book does not need internet, it even has flight mode.

      • On my Kindle, Amazon ignores the flight mode which is on permanently to push updates.

  • You can't read webpages, but with Boox you can.

    • Do you have a boox? I really want to get one but not sure if I should stick to a kindle.

      • No, waiting for specials, the OzBargain way.

    • The scribe has a web browser and you can also send readable versions of webpages to it. It’s fine for static content webpages (reading, not media like video etc) but the e-ink screen is obviously limited when compared to an LCD.

  • It’s great for comics/manga too

  • Is it as good as a remarkable?(does the Amazon tie in limit it's use?)

    • +1

The scribe is a far better ereader experience than remarkable. Until very recently, remarkable was a far better writing device but recent software updates have filled that gap to a large degree.

The main area of weakness for the scribe is that it needs support for Google drive or Dropbox.

My main use case is reading, plus I really hate the subscription model of remarkable so I went with the scribe, plus at this price it’s actually cheaper.

  • its junk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW6jW9utbwU&pp=ygUNa2luZGxlI…
ive been looking for a notetaker and boox seems to be the only option. I get there is not lot of demand for e-ink notetakers but surely this will change if there are much more affordable options

    • There have been 3 or so major software updates since that video was released which fix most of the main issues people had with it at launch. I can assure you it’s not “junk”.

  • +1

WHy not spend a bit more and get an ipad?

    • +5

E ink is much more comfortable for reading. This is fairly exxy though

    • +1

Different markets. I’m personally after an e-ink book that I can use as a daily notepad with ocr that can backup to a cloud service.

iPad Pro is ok, but after something a little more dedicated for the use.

      • That’s the main thing missing from the Scribe - cloud backup like Dropbox. If they sort that out with an update I will be very happy.

    • Battery life

    • I have an iPad as well as the Scribe. The Kindle is a far better reading and writing device, it’s not even close.

I’m using it for study as well as recreational reading and it’s great that there are no other distractions (like on an iPad), it’s a great size for reading and annotating PDFs and the screen feels a lot like writing on paper.

The Scribe has a battery life of a month or two if using about an hour a day.

      • I'm looking for a tablet to use for study, specifically annotating journal articles for (1) syncing to a reference management software (Zotero, Mendeley etc, essential), and (2) annotating with a note-taking software (Obsidian etc, optional).

The paperwhite was terrible for reading journal articles. Is this notably different? How do you use the scribe for study?

        • I am looking for the same. Not sure if is fast enough to read large papers. Also no cloud sync can be a pain.

  • Should I wait for the prime day or order now? Will this deal remain until the prime day?

  • Thanks OP. Got a 16gb Scribe with basic pen.

  • I’m ready to pull the trigger but just wondering if this would get any better 😔

    • As in price-wise or Gen 2 model?

  • This is the type of thing that I need in my life but I can't justify the cost… Has anyone got any thoughts on alternatives? Not really a tablet because I don't want or need all the wizbang other stuff.

  • Has anyone had any experience with the supernote a5x? Considering purchasing one…

    • Yes i have one. What do you want to know?

      • have PM-ed you some qns.thnx

    • No backlight is the deal breaker for me.

  • +1

Cool to see boox has colour eink displays now.

    • Colour e-ink is still premature. There's a dark tint and barely usable.

  • Got it last week, best purchase of the year. I use it to replace physical notebooks for both work and personal stuff and it’s life changing. Also reading on this is a great pleasure compared to my smaller kindle oasis, although I would still prefer the oasis to read on commute / travel and in bed.

    • Which model? How much?

  • +2

wow, was going to buy the 64gb but it’s returned to full price. you’d think they’d keep their own product discounted for the whole 2 days.

    • +1

Yeah i noticed that too wth. Seems like it's only the 16gb basic pen version that is discounted now

    • +1

FYI discount is back up for the other versions! Discount properly shows when in checkout, though.

  • What's the delivery date for people who bought? Mine is 24th July, looks like it's on backorder.
