Sony televisions are awesome, I have two and picture quality is amazing

    • +10

      Android TV is awesome, too.

        • +3

Yeah, then Google invented Google TV dongle, so you don't need to use the TV UI.

        • +1

Bought an x85k recently. Google tv interface surprisingly is quite fast. May need to give it a few months to check the smoothness is still there

        • +2

Gave you an upvote as you're not wrong. Sony TVs are fantastic, but the software inadvertently lets you down a year or two in.

Our 85D just became so sluggish it wouldn't work, and our 90H randomly freezes and reboots and has had sound issues that took ages to be patched out

          • +1

@buckster: Yeah exactly.. comment was based on lived experience with a KD-65A8, would crash and reboot far more than it should. But judging by the downvotes it's a bit of a sensitive topic!

    • -2

Mine has no auto-off. So if you have it hooked up to a console or computer and turn the device off, the TV will stay on forever unless you turn it off separately. Basic shit like this has been standard on TVs for like 20 years. The days of Sony making high-quality TVs are long gone.

      • +1

Its there in the device settings in all the sony tvs I've had since 2009

      • +3

Unless you are quoting an experience with a different TV, this statement is incorrect.

The are a variety of settings accessed via the "Settings" menu. Not so hard to find or work out. You can set from a variety of choices to either turn off TV or to just hibernate after set intervals.

      Same here

    • mmm seems fine here in Brisbane

      • Capitals only. If you're outside an east coast capital city, (unsure about Adelaide & Perth) generally you'll get that msg. e.g. Coastal regional Qld here only 300km north of Brisbane, and I do too.

        • +1

Same message here for Perth, seems like east coast capitals only

        • +1

Suburban Adelaide is a no go 😑

  • +4

Given they are similar in price point, how does the Sony X90K stack up against the TCL C845? They both seem to have a good balance of value/features/quality - could someone please enlighten me about why you'd pick each over the other?

    • +1 would like to know too…

      • +26

Sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about.

          • +2

@thousandsuns: Look at this guy/girl. Thinking the quality of a TV purely depends on the brand name alone.

As if SONY can’t make a bad tv and TVL can’t make a good one.

          • +4

@thousandsuns: TCL manufacturers all the high end LCD panels for Sony and Samsung now

It’s 90 dimming zones on the Sony vs almost 600 on the TCL, image quality on the TCL is significantly better

            • -5

@cille745: A TV is much more than image quality. Consider OS, build quality, warranty, etc. I have the X80 from awhilw back and it's an amazing TV. If price is the same people tend towards the better brand by nature. It's all personal preference.

              • @thousandsuns: x80 is not a good tv sorry. If you're happy with it that's all that matters though :)

            • @cille745: Couldn’t agree more.

          • +4

@thousandsuns: That link compares a 2017 model TCL to a 2022 model Sony.

            Stupid comparison.

            • -3

@sb9: I stand corrected. Do your own comparison.

              Here you go: https://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&i…

              https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x90k

Why is there no actual comparison of the 2 online, a I wonder…maybe because they are not in the same wavelength? 🤔

Funny enough, RTINGs don't even have a review of it either. Must be that much of a 💩 TV.

              • +3

@thousandsuns: Unpublished your comment lol - feeling a little sheepish?

There's no need to get so wound up on a Tuesday morning when someone politely asks for the opinions of others who are more knowledgeable on the topic. I have done my own research, but the TCL model is very newly released and there aren't a ton of reviews online yet - none that I've seen directly compare it to other TVs at the same price point.

I'm sure some OzB members have purchased the TCL C845 in the recent EOFY sales or perhaps at least seen it in the flesh, so I thought to ask. Unfortunately my local store still didn't have it on display yet when I went last weekend. Take a deep breath, there's more to life than jumping down the throat of people online who ask questions which you might think are silly :)

                • -3

@sb9: I unpublished my comment because the information on if was incorrect which I have accepted. My opinion does not change despite the discussion below. You wanted an opinion I gave you one. For the life of me I still don't think its a fair comparison.
When you come back with a solid reason to pick the TCL over the Sony in this scenario, please do enlighten me. I am quite curious. There is no sarcasm there. Clearly there must be something you see there 😐

Also, everything is opinion based here. Do you want someone to tell you this is better than that because to them it feels better or do you want to check out specs and do performance comparison yourself via research or demo before you make the choice?

                  • +2

@thousandsuns: Have you not read some of the comments from other members below? They've already listed out some of the advantages - which are mainly to do with the panel specs/image quality. Yes, the Sony has its advantages as well, which are also listed below.

It's absolutely a fair to compare two TVs of the same size and price.

                • @sb9: Maybe the person/ppl wanting the question answered should chuck their own post up?

              • +1

@thousandsuns: RTINGs only publish global/USA makes and models, the TCL C845 is UK/Aus-specific version so you wont find it here.

    • +7

On paper, the TCL may be better due mini-led. The difference is the subjective user experience, the long term product quality and customer support that are not on paper.

Things like software, user interface performance and responsiveness, firmware (that links hardware to the user interface), etc. are much harder to get right, and Sony performs much better than TCL.

      • +2

While this may be true as a blanket statement, it isn’t here, reviews on the C845 state that there isn’t any issues.

The panel is objectively much better, important to note that TCL manufacturers all the high end LCD panels for Sony and Samsung now

      • +2

Firmware sure, but as an owner of a Sony TV I wouldn't buy a TV for the UI/OS experience when you can get a far better experience with a Chromecast or a Shield.

I think the most compelling argument for Sony I have seen in these comparisons is the image processing.

      • +1

One thing that is constant across all products: cheap brands usually have shit user experience / OS / software. If user experience is important then do some research on cheapo brands. Even good brands manage to screw it up. And if user experience isnt important then your priorities are wrong ! :)

        • I purchased a C845 a few days ago and can confirm the OS is totally fine. It's Google TV just like the X90K but with a marginally slower processor (both MediaTek). It has AV1 support and smarttubenext runs flawlessly. Dolby Vision MKVs play via the Jellyfin app as well.

Sony, Samsung and LG are out of the LCD business. TCL now make much of their screens. It's not like it used to be, the market forces for TCL to make good products are there nowadays.

I strongly suggest people in this thread read a review instead of looking at the brand name parroting some experience they had over half a decade ago when things were very different.

    • +10

Better motion smoothing and upscale on the Sony, but at this size it's not incredibly noticeable. The contrast and blacks on the TCL are MUCH better. Movies and games with be easy to view, and at higher perceived quality.

The Sony/FALD dimming tend to feel like your bliding yourself when you watch a movie in the dark because of light bleeding through the black bars at the top and bottom of the film content.

TCL also has 3 year warranty by default. Customer service is hit or miss, but honestly that's the case with every brand.

    • +2

They don’t, 90 local dimming zones vs almost 600 on the TCL

    • This TV is excellent, with simple colour calibration, its even better.

    • +6

I just got a 75"TCL C845 for my daughter. For reference I also own a 55" LG OLED (c1) and a Panasonic 65" OLED, and we also have the Dolby HDR monitor at work (we restore film and grade it for release on UHD BD/Streaming etc)
I haven't used the Sony, owned a lot of Bravias in the past, but they don't really have any relevance to the discussion.

We wall mounted and hooked up the 75" C845, via an AppleTV 4K (Current 128GB model) and turned off all the TV image processing and then ran the Apple TV calibration that uses your iPhone to run through a basic colour patch calibration.

The image on the C845 was genuinely stunning. We watched Avatar Way of the Water, the colour was exceptional, the scenes that fade to black left the room in complete blackness, we didn't notice any blooming on the titles or the subtitles etc. I was really, really impressed. I considered picking up an 85" to replace the 65" OLED I currently have in our home lounge room. DolbyVision demos looked great too, it seems to support DoVi properly.I haven't tried the native apps as we use the ATV4K for everything, and an Oppo UHD player for any discs. Didn't see any motion issues, it really looked amazing. Watched some standard Netflix shows and it all looked very good. Watched a bit of John Wick and again, no complaints. This thing really does go well up against an OLED, and I would prefer to sit and watch the 75" TCL rather than the LG C1 55" OLED.
I generally prefer image quality over size, especially when it comes to black levels, I'd much rather watch the 55" OLED than any of the standard LED backlit TVs I've seen even if they were 85" or bigger, but the C845 picture is genuinely great once you set it up properly, and I would definitely prefer a larger TCL than a smaller OLED based on the viewing we did. The sound was quite good too, the bass was surprisingly good and clean, I don't know if wall mounting improves things there or hinders, it has a rear mounted 'sub woofer'. We hooked up the gaming PC at 1080P 240Hz in game mode, and an Xbox Series X in 4K mode, it looked good, but we didn't do much other than throw up a few games for a quick play, so I can't say much about that. It does support VRR, AMD Freesync premium and all that guff, so it probably does quite well on gaming. Very happy with the purchase, trying to stop myself picking up an 85….

      • Thanks for the review - did / can you try some sports?

        • Sorry, we don't have a FTA antenna hooked up. I tried watching some MLB on ATV, and it looked better with the motion option set to low, then it looked good to me. Ted Lasso football matches looked fine :)

I don't really know what I'm looking for as far as sports goes though, and haven't watched FTA TV since the 1990s other than ABC iView and SBS catchup occasionally, so I'm not really qualified to comment on it.

      Or Tas.

      Closed the borders again?

  • +4

This tv is excellent, I am lucky to have the 85, very very happy with this TV

  • Not shipping to SA.

  • Looking for a 65 size TV.

  • -4

Have a friend that works in the factory where these are assembled and they are actually a Samsung panel which is also put on the Sony

Sony don't make TVs anymore and just a rebrand this is well known

    • +8

This is an over simplification. There are a lot more that goes into TV than just the “Panel” which can separate cheaper tv from good ones.

The chip that runs the tv will impact, the responsiveness, the inputs, picture quality, UI, feature set etc

      • I'm talking about just the panel

        • +2

CSOT is the manufacturer, now owned by TCL

          • @cille745: Hisense uses the panels too

when you look at an ULED vs x85k the Hisense looks better

        • No you weren't. You claimed the TV is a rebrand. This is completely and utterly false.

          • -7

@lunchbox99: isn't spreading misinformation what ozbargain is about?

            • @Poor Ass: You said 'assembled', claimed the Sony were rebranded. Then you said you were talking only about panels. That's misinformation . The 'mate in assembly' claim is worth a lot less now than when you made it.

        • Samsung also doesn't produce LCD panels either, so even that is incorrect

    • +2

Samsung make a lot of LCD and OLED panels for TV/laptop/phone etc manufacturers, as do other companies like Vizio and LG

Sony OLED is an LG panel, iPhone uses Samsung OLED. But then Kogan also uses Samsung panels are those TVs are trash

There's a lot more to who just produces the panel and they will have different specifications

    • The negs I love it

  • Good for the Series X?

  • +1

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09P4B3M4Z?th=1

The 75" (X80 instead of X90) seems to be even further discounted from RRP (40% off, 2,999 -> 1795)

How do we feel about this as a deal?

    • Normal pricing everywhere.

    • X80 isn’t a full array LED like the X90 is. Expect a difference in picture quality and contrast

  • There were a few bargains with box damaged items on the Sony eBay store for this model as well in different sizes.

Not sure if they are still available, but for example I picked up a 75" X90K for $1899 last week.

Box damaged Sony XR65 X95K, on eBay, $2249, is this a good deal?

    • I got a "boxed damage" two weeks ago and literally I cannot see where the damage is.

I believe in the pallet there may have been some damage and the entire shipment was returned.

So you still have the 1 year warranty and its a new TV.

      • My box damaged Sony 65X90K was destroyed. Getting a refund. I must have been the unlucky one for sure.

  • +1
    • The cu8000 is the budget Samsung. This Sony is miles better.

  • Is the sound really cinema quality?

    • The sound is clear and wide but no bass (as expected) so not quite cinema quality.

  • Amazing deal but to note - this won't ship to Tasmania (At least Devonport or Launceston) and it won't ship to rural NSW.

  • It's a good TV but the stand is no good

    • I didn’t mind it. Shame the tv was stuffed though. A bit loose. Easy to install.

    • What’s wrong with the stand?

Quite sturdy, two height settings, I can fit my Soundbar below the screen.

    • Seems to be a pretty normal price for that model

    • +1

      Now dropped to $796.

    • out of stock when i look ?

  • Anyone calibrated their TVs color after buying it from the store ? I’ve never done that except at work. So if you want the best color and viewing experiences, Sony is the one to get as they have the best color accuracy out of box.

    • Yeah, I bring the probe home from work and calibrate the TVs and projector at home. If you have an ATV the calibration using an iPhone actually works surprisingly well.

  • not shipping for ACT. 🥲

  • Looks back in stock

  • +1

FYI, now the same $1199 at Sony store. Probably clearing out stock for the L series.
Stack with SB cash back 5% or CR 2% (often 8-10% every other week).
And less limitation on shipping locations around Oz.
