Bought one 2 weeks ago.. sigh.. should have waited.

    • +1

wait till December, would be even cheaper

      • +1

        perhaps, but winter is now!

    • It was $150 two weeks ago.

    • +6

buy this one, return old one

    • only 6000 fill? wasnt it 700fill last year?

  • Would this be warm enough in Finland\Norway in December, with thermal shirt and shirt as inside layer?

    .

    • +3

It's warm enough for me at about 2-3c with a decent underlayer on.

      They aren't water proof though.

      • Thanks b2dz. Appreciate you sharing based on personal experience…

        .

Depends what you're doing and how far north - if chasing Northern lights in lapland then no, if being a tourist in helsinki going inside a lot then yes, but only just and you'll need a waterproof/ windproof shell and or umbrella. When doing lapland i wore full body merino, polar fleece jumper, north face mcmurdo jacket, beanie, sorel boots and ski pants - but we wanted to spend a lot of time outside including sitting or standing still and watching the northern lights for >1 hour - this would be overkill in the city of going to cafes etc

    • Don't expect to wear it on mere tshirt, Melbourne-style, when it's subzero outside. You'll still need some proper layers under it.

This is going to be a nice, warmer layer.

    • I don't have this but have experience up there, based on the heft of this one you'd be alright in southern Finland with a nice thermal and a jumper if it doesn't go far below zero. But up north, pushing it. Helsinki can easily get subzero in early winter (last winter was intense) and you'd want a heavier but still city-friendly jacket. Heaps of people wear puffers there, a hood is a must. As is beanie, scarf, decent gloves (wool mittens can't be beaten for warmth). Legs are where you can get caught out, anything under zero and you need a good thermal bottom. Have fun.

  • Any tips on size ? Are they bigger than standard size ?

    • +1

I am normally size M, bought size S last year, which fits ok but on the small side considering you might want to wear another layer underneath, or if close the zipper, feels slightly tight.
I bought size M this year and feel it is a better fit.

    • +2

Yes, I think general consesus is to size down from what you normally are.

    • +2

I am 6ft 5, weigh about 90kg and wear a medium. Good fit. they have a slight sort of curvature that lowers in the back slightly, so a draft doesn't go up your back.

      • +3

Interesting. Last time I got a size that was normal but the the hands were puffy . So I basically looks like Michelin man

    • +3

My Halo is the only Small sized top I own, everything else medium to large. I would definitely suggest trying one on, if not just size down.

    • On the website there's a guage showing the fit, and it indicates this is "true to fit", not "runs large". Maybe ymmv.

    • I am a Medium in most brands and Small in this jacket fits perfectly, similar to my standard medium jackets from other brands.

Own one of these jackets and they are ok, but not great. The thing I hate about it is that feather pops out and you can't pull some back in which are on the stitching and corners. I also have a Patagonia down jacket and no feathers pop out and it's much lighter. Better to spend more on a jacket in my opinion.

    • which patagonia jacket do you have?

      • +1

Men's Down Sweater Hoody. The warmth to weight ratio is superior in comparison to Macpac hooded down jacket.

    • +1

I have one and my wife has one and it’s the only jacket I use the last two years.
It’s warm enough and light enough and doesn’t lose any feathers.

No Cashback if you use a gift card though.

          • @shiznit: I got ~7$ cashback confirmed while using gift card….for a total of ~260$ for two…
I used two gift cards of $200 and 50$, and paid rest via other payment gateway…

So confirmed cashback is tracked when using gift card

      • Yes I just checked all the way to checkout. There’s two options, add Gc and then add cc.

  • Does macpac have any street cred?

    • +9

You'll get the ozbargainer nod for sure

    • Puff Daddy ain't gunna pop a cap in yoo if you wear one

    • Not really. Pathway presence of the Halo is basically non-existent. Canada Goose though will turn heads.

  • I went to a Macpac store recently, but they didn't have many colours left. I also didn't quite like the feel of the shell. It didn't feel like the Macpac jacket I got for my wife a year ago; it felt thinner, like a biodegradable plastic bag. Did it change?
I ended up buying a hooded Under Armour down jacket from BCF ($139 shipped after discounted giftcards), which feels like better quality. Also has large inside pockets, and is a better fit for me (slim, 6' tall). The down was "trackable", and the batch mine was from had a fill power of 710 (more than the stated 600).

    • Yeah, says it's now made from 100% recycled plastic.

    • Yes, something seems to have changed with the shell recently. I bought one years ago and it doesn’t wrinkle much however another one bought this year is extremely wrinkly.

      • The ones in the shop were so incredibly creased. The fabric felt weak and thin. Didn't look as nice compared to before.

    • macpac is slowly becoming Kathmandu.
Their quality is being degraded as it gains popularity.

  • I was in the Macpac store in Collingwood, last week. I've got the Halo light already and was looking at this one as I needed something a bit warmer, tried it on an felt like a zeppelin, it was also quite wrinkly. Seemed very warm though.

In the end I paid a bit more ($160) and went for the less bulky mercury jacket, pretty warm, somewhere between the halo light and the halo: https://www.macpac.com.au/macpac-mens-mercury-down-jacket/12…

    this or kathmandu?

    • +3

If they were both the same price, I would buy Kathmandu but at this price this is a great jacket.

      • thanks ill wait for a deal on kathmandu!

  • thanks OP! ordered2 with 8% giftcard via nrma blue and 3% cashback…

I rate the jacket but **** me they are annoying to wash and get them to be fluffy again, the tennis ball method works..kind of i guess - have never got it back to the OG showroom fluffed up look.

    • They have instructions on their website on how to wash them, I have to wash mine soon so I will have to see how well it works.

    • +1

We bought a dryer specifically for drying down jackets, but never the same again.

We do use Grangers and dryer balls.

      • Thanks I will get the dryer balls too

      • This is what I use too. It's good but takes a long time to wash this jacket.

    • I agree! That's another thing I don't like about this jacket. I use balls in the dryer and it takes a good 2 hours to get it fluffy and I need to manually pull apart the clumped down feathers and keep drying until it gets fluffy.

      • has enyone tried using silicone gels to dry the jacket.?

  • How does this rate against the "top" brands like TNF, Patagonia, Arc'teryx etc etc? Planning on making one big purchase for a down jacket/puffer and be done with it

    • This is a great jacket, especially at this price but I also have Patagonia down sweater which I prefer over this however Patagonia one is twice the price of this.

    • Inferior to these brands. I rather spend bit more and get better quality and down than go cheap

    • I like my Patagonia Down Jackets

  • Any good down vest under $100 can recommend?

This one is on sale, bright colour is good for outdoor exercise, probably not so good as everyday wear.

    • Aldi for nothing on Halo

  • Bros that have this, does it lose feathers now and then? I've noticed my Cederberg does, at a rate of maybe 2-3 a week through the seams. It looks way better (colour) but just not sure if it's par for the course with down jackets.

  • +1

    Thanks @myotherac11 I got one.

  • Whats the difference betwen v1 and v2?

  • whats halo hood ?

    • Halo is the name of the style and hood is just a hood I.e it’s the halo jacket with hood.

  • What's the sizing on these like compared to Kathmandu?

  • +3

Someone posted $109 for new members on BCF: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/786239

  • black or dark blue - hmm - colours are so attractive … not

my daily winter jacket in Sydney is a Kathmandu - which similarly says 'down' but actually contains 'down and feathers' - the ratio of each seems unspecified

what I like about my Kathmandu jacket is the large inside pockets where I can carry a shopping bag, a hat, and a scarf, and the outside pockets are also deep and roomy for carrying gloves, tissues, and my iPhone.

dunno this one - but anything without large inside pockets I'm just not gonna wear.

    • Don't know which model at Kathmandu you referring but the Epiq Men's 600 Fill Hooded Down Jacket on sale @ $200 has Fill 80% Duck down 20% Duck feather and Fill Power 600.
So basically same specs as Macpac. Kathmandu apart from the 2 tone jackets just have another colour which is light brown/Canvas.
