I've never had a good experience with Seagate external hard drives. Great deal for a USB3 1TB portable storage unit though.

    • I've had no problems with my Seagate external HD's, I'm currently using 3 1TB on my computer. Purchasing this since its small and portable, great for bringing on holiday trips and transfer photos

  • Personally I always prefer Seagates but each to his own. Nice find.

it's coming up as $119.95 with free shipping on the COTD site

    • Its free postage but with Coupon it takes $30 from $119.95 "SGFACEBOOK"

    Good price! I paid $99(free postage) for the 1TB 3.0 portable hard drive from Bing Lee here last month;
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/76738

$89.95 would be one of the cheapest prices I've seen for a 1TB 3.0 2.5" drive.

  • If I get this I'm hoping to hook it up to my Samsung TV (2010) for the built-in PVR. Do you think this HDD will be on 24/7

ie. does this have the "auto-off" energy saving feature? this also extend the life of the HDD..

    • No auto-off. Unless the TV is off and cut off the power supply to the USB port.

    • thanks mate - will get one :)

    • If I get this I'm hoping to hook it up to my Samsung TV (2010) for the built-in PVR. Do you think this HDD will be on 24/7

Be careful with that. As a word of warning, I have a Samsung 2012 Series 6 TV and when I plug in my 2.5" WD Passport, the USB port alone from the TV does not give the HDD enough power. You can hear the drive spin up, then down, then up, then down. It never reads. I don't know if it will be the same with the Seagate, or a different Samsung TV, but that's what happens to me. I can only use either a USB stick, or an AC powered ext HDD. 2.5" portable ext HDDs are no good.

I actually do have a 750GB Seagate portable HDD, but I never tested it on that TV.

      • My old WD Passport was very picky about being used with it's supplied ( very short ) cable on some devices. It was annoying as on some things I'd want to use a long cable but it wouldn't power up and I've it hanging by a 10cm cable and it would work fine.

      • I had the same problem once. But it wasn't hooked up to the TV but another device. Anyway, in my case, I tried a different USB cable and hot damn, it worked. Can't explain why, because that particular cable works just fine otherwise.

Still worth a shot, I reckon.

        • I see. Yes, I used the supplied cable. With WD HDDs in the past, I've found any other cable wouldn't work. And I didn't have any other USB 3.0 cables to try. It's probably a WD problem.

      • I very much doubt the TV does not give the HDD enough power. As long as it's a USB 2.0 port then there will be enough power to run your external HDD. And considering its a 2012 TV, it should have 2.0 USB.

I'm 99% sure that you don't have a 2.0 USB cable. You probably just have an older USB cable which will not be capable of delivering enough power. Check all your other USB cables around the house and try and find one that has "USB 2.0" or "Hi-Speed" written on it. If you don't have one then go buy one. I'm confident this will make it work. Let us know how you go.

Also, just a tip for everybody, I'm not sure about Samsung, but I know with Sony that they don't play anything on external HDD's that are formatted with NTFS. They will only play FAT32 formatted drives.

        • My cable was USB 3.0 dude. Definitely not an old or crappy cable. It came with the HDD which itself isn't old either. A USB 2.0 or 1.1 cable won't even plug into a 3.0 HDD.

Also Samsungs have no problem with ntfs. It's a problem with it not spinning up, not its file system not being recognised. Using a longer cable did the exact same thing with another WD HDD even when plugged onto my PC. When the cable is too long it doesn't deliver enough power.

      • Maybe ur USB cable too long, the tv only give 500ma of power should be enough to power portable HDD if cable isn't too long. Or u can try plug the other port USB to a USB charger (I normally plug it to a iPhone charger) normally portable USB has a 2 male USB ends. One for external power if USB port power is too weak.

        • If the cable is included with the HDD, then one would assume that the cable WD supplies is adequate for its needs?

Thank you Johnny. Just bought one.

  • anyone know the internal drive dimensions (height in particular) .. want to tear it out and put it in an old laptop. (rip all the DVDs and give the kids a wiggle viewing machine)

damn you ozbargain, I was going to buy this drive only and now I just spent $186.6,
the code "SGFACEBOOK" is for $30 off, don't know if you need to buy certain things or not.

  • Hi guys, new here just wanting to know if i did plug this into my TV should i be able to watch movies from my PC etc, had a few troubles with this before with it not working different types of portables though. but general rule if i plug this in should it work?

    • Depends whether the USB ports on your TV supplies enough power to the drive. They supply a different amount to the USB ports on your PC. My Samsung couldn't power a 2.5" drive.

      • well the drive turns on, says its there, but doesn't actually find the movies, could that possibly be the way i've transferred the movies and such?

        • If it can see the rest of the contents on your drive, maybe the movies are in a format your TV doesn't support?

        • it couldn't see anything, but it was full of movies, what type of format do TV's generally supportm is there a general list?

        • does your tv read NTFS?

      • My Samsung tv plays fine videos from this hard disk. It has 2 usb ports but only one is "powered" ;)

    just ordered one, thanks OP!

These are great for travel, I filled it with movies and connected it to a WD live box last time I went travelling so I could hook it up to any tv in hotels/motels etc or the laptop. It worked so well I gave it to my brother for xmas. Time to set it up again.

    got one, thanks :)

  • Can the hdd be taken out easily? What is the hdd model number?

  • SOLD OUT!

  • Is $89 a good price? Or is it just 10-20$ off what you can normally find them for? Not sure if I should impulse buy…

    • it was a good price :P

  • Sold out. :(

Was "Almost gone" when I added to cart, then found I forgot my p/w and had to request a change (seems to happen every time with COTD). Then it was gone when I went to check out.

Oh well. I didn't want to buy from CotD anyway.

  • +3

thank god it's sold out, otherwise I wouldn't be able to curb my obssession with buying stuff just becoz it appeared on ozbargain.

  • SOLD OUT - I had in my cart, but it rejected my Paypal payment

  • Also, does COTD actually have stock ready to ship? Ive had bad experiences in the past with similar "deal" sites where they either wait for orders before buying stock or have to wait a month for stock to come in…

    • With the Pioneer isolation earphones, That sold out pretty quick like the Seagate Hard drive but I received it in a week. Hopefully it will be the same with this, either way not to fussed on arrival time.

Bought this so I can add it to my camera gear collection for travelling overseas and exporting SDHC photos to the portable

  • Could someone please tell us what that code SGFACEBOOK is for. Other products or just this item?

    • The codes for COTD are usually restricted to a particular item, in this case SG probably stands for Seagate.

    • it was a facebook promotion for this item only. SG = seagate. edit: woops should have refreshed before posting

    • how to get up-to-date info? just check ozbargain every hour….like the rest of us… hahaha…
or follow ozbargain on their twitter..

  • Download ozbargain app from google play. you can check new deal whenever you are free.

  • Also a very useful strategy I learnt recently is to price match at officeworks.
