What Is Your New Energy Plan Rate ?

Just saw my new AGL rates and not sure what to do next.

Peak - 61 c/kWh (6am to 10am and 3pm to 1am)
Solar - 5 c/kWh feed in
Supply - 107 c/day
Loco - SA

This is a 57% increase from my plan in June.

What’s your plan ? Planning on calling AGL soon to try to get a better deal.

Update 1: Called up LUMO directly, got 39 c/kWh - which is much better than AGL, and supply charge went down too, to 92 cents.

Meanwhile state owned power company in Perth is crediting our accounts for the thrid time. This will take the total to $1400 they’ve given us.

    • +1

      That’s it! Melbourne is coming.

  • -1

Corrupt government doing nothing but giving select people that don't work our tax money to help them pay increasing prices instead of just regulating the prices across the board for our citizens.

  • Why is it not standard nation wide??

    • +1

Different power generation methods in different states due to different climates, topography & natural resources.

Many types of power are lost once generated, the longer you transport & transmit it. So unless it's stuff like gas/oil etc that's easily transported, you have a high loss of efficiency.

      • I’m in SA.
From what I understand, we export power to Victoria. Yet our electricity prices are so much higher than theirs.

        • +1

          That's correct.

But the excess created and sent interstate can only be produced during the day when there is no regular demand for it, not at night when the demand exists for it.

Also, the first thing your Labor state government at the time did with the project was sell it off to a foreign company/group. Even the Liberal's were against that. So no, you'll never be seeing any economic benefit from that as a consumer now.

        • Sometimes we export, sometimes we import.

The chart of the last 7 days is pretty clear. All the "Purple Area" is MWHs imported from interstate. The area when we're below "0" we are exporting interstate.

          Note the market price correlation.

We are on Amber (wholesale pricing), it's great if you have a battery and solar and can manage over the peak pricing times.

    Origin in ACT.
    83.3c/day
    21.2c/kWh
    100% renewable.

    • Also ACT, on ActewAGL
      87.7c/day
      23.9c/kWh

Marginal, might be worth switching if I can get a good origin deal. Do you have natural gas, and if so what rate?

      • That's electrically only - don't have gas lines to my property.

  • -1

Think yourself lucky, imagine if SA didn't have all the renewable generation.

    • +3

It would be even more miserable

    • -3

If they didn't close down the fossil fuel energy production and replace it with hopeless wind generation and foreign owned solar farms, they'd still have a stable grid now and power rates less than half what they are currently paying.

  • My new plan rate here: https://imgur.com/Oaodh5G

    • Location? That's very cheap!

      • NSW. It's cheap but not sure for how long. I hear Globird increases the rates after a few months vs 1-year that I would typically expect once a new plan starts.

  • looking on the comparison website there's a group called "Energy Locals" who charge a supply charge nearly half any retailer (~ 52c / day). Anyone used them ?

    • +3

They charge a monthly subscription fee on top.

  • Also need to be careful of "demand charge" on your electricity bill when you switch if you have a smart meter. Not all distributors have that item for the same address. very weird.

  • I got the email from Lumo last night about my contract ending and my rates going up;

    Moonee Ponds, VIC, 3039

    Current Rates;
    CL1 - 16.005c/kwh
    Anytime - 18.898c/kwh
    Service - 85.8c/day

    New Rates;
    CL1 - 26.389c/kwh
    Anytime - 32.519c/kwh
    Service - $1.1438/day

Going to be chatting with Lumo later today, and scoping out the comparison site too.

    edit

    Just checked the comparison site, and the best option there is Sumo with the following rates;

    CL1 - 17.61 ¢/kWh
    Anytime - 23.22¢/kWh
    Service - 115.78¢/day

    • +1

I'm in VIC and played around with the comparison site too. Just a word of caution, Sumo current plan (I used Jenema as the power provider for this energy fact sheet) that you mentioned will expire by the end of July so their rates might change. I was hesitant to choose Sumo at this point because of this.

    • I chose this plan too. If they raise prices in 2 weeks' time, I'll move again.

  • +2

Currently with Nectr on time of use, in Sydney metro. Got a great deal with them last year just before they stopped taking people on that plan. Now on their 'Nectr Hive Saver' plan

    Peak: 35.97c
    Off Peak: 18.7c
    Shoulder: 22c
    Service: 99c per day

This comes out cheaper than any of the options (Tango and Red being the closest) on the Govt comparison site. Don't have solar or battery.

    • When did your join the Nectr plan?

      • +2

Was probably around March or April 2022 and had great rates for 12 months before the increase kicked in.

        • Yeah sumo was cheapest for me as well but weary of that. I joined OVO which was marginally more but prices locked in until August 2024 and has a $120 referral bonus on top.

  • Are the comparison websites worth it at the month with many companies raising their prices from 1st August?

    • +3

Several retailers in Vic are offering locked prices well into 2024, so it would be worth comparing a few of the best offers from the comparison site to see if they're offering a locked period.

      • Can you suggest some who are locking the prices? Thanks

        • +1

Tango, OVO and Lumo are three I know of that offer locked prices, but you'll have to make sure they're offering competitive rates for your address.

          • @ragrum: How do I tell if prices are locked on the Vic compare site? Do I see it by the release date?

Or do I have to call and ask manually?

            • @hiiragizawa: No way of seeing that on the comparison site as far as I know - should be on the providers' websites.

          • @ragrum: reading OVO reviews looks like they have only direct debit and charge more than needed. Then people have "good time" to get money back…

  • Tango (VIC)
    Supply: 66 c/day
    Peak: 30.206 C/kwh
    Controlled: 18.953 C/kwh

Is this cheap or should I be looking at other providers?

It's almost as though closing down coal/gas power stations to replace them with wind/solar doesn't lead to cheaper power prices.

Who could have possibly predicted this 🙄

    • +2

I thought it was the maintenance/upkeep of those coal/gas plants that was a big cause of the price rises?

And of course there was always going to be a cost in transition. A lot of that would already be behind us if people hadn't listened to Tony Abbott and chums screaming about carbon tax when Gillard was trying to kick things off.

      • No… The maintenance and upkeep of those has been a factor for the last 50 years and we haven't had price rises like these.

It's because the government has made it a hostile environment to invest in new gas projects and especially new gas/coal generation for at least the last decade. So surprise surprise, we are A. Yes having to maintain older and older shit and B. With the growing population and more energy demand, prices are going up…

  • I'm on OVO - perfect plans for EV owners, there's a super special 8c/kWh windows between 12-6am. here's my full usage charge rates:

    Solar feed-in tariff
    10c/kWh

    Supply charge
    115.77005c/day

    Peak unit rate
    31.185c/kWh

    EV charging window (12am-6am)
    8.0c/kWh

I've set my EV & batteries to pull from the grid during the window and have therefore been sending as much solar back to the grid.

if you're keen to get on this (limited) plan, flick me a PM I'm happy to share a referral code with a higher joining credit. ($120 vs $100)

    • Obviously not buying the EV for its green credentials lol… Sucking down that sweet coal power from midnight to 6am for cheap to power the EV.

  • Tango VIC SP Ausnet. Was price locked for a year and it expired end of May. New rates for 1st August.

    Gas - Supply 74.8c to 115.5c/day. Winter usage 2.145 c/mj to 3.146 c/mj.

    • Are you sure? I'm with them and supply for energy now is 88 cents and will increase to 119 in August. Usage is same.

Dang. If only we had nuclear power by now..

    • Even if the decision was made to go nuclear today, it would probably take two decades to build the plant. Ten years of that would be spent fighting court cases. It's a bit sad really.

      • by now*

    • The federal government whether ALP/LNP would rather spend hundreds of billions on Nuclear Submarines to profit the US military industrial complex, than invest in anything remotely useful to Aussies like renewable energy.

as long as the solar feed-in is high I don't mind paying more for the other costs as generally it's a refund every quarter for me

    • Good deal, is this a grandfathered plan or is this a new signup after the July rate revision?

        • Are you stuck with one retailer Origin then? Can't switch retailers or you'll lose this qld govt scheme?

          • @xdigger: I can change to any as long as it's in my name

Issue is finding one with good feed in tariff on top as a lot of the retailers are imposing this silly rule saying if you get the 44c gov we will not pay anymore bs

  • Location: Brisbane

    Former Supplier: AGL

Note: Offered $100 to go back to them even after I told them of the better rates I could get. Still wasn't competitive. Weren't interested in retaining me. Bye Felicia.

    New Supplier: Energy Locals

    Monthly Charge $13.99

Daily Supply Charge: 0.82c / day

    General Usage 0.225c / kWh

    Demand - 0.15c/kWh (4pm to 9pm)

Solar Feed In- 10.7c for first 10kWh each day.
    6c/kWh after this

Have only received my first bill ($9.50) which was 20 days of charges, but has been a huge change in costs. Some of this may be reduced due to change of season, but it is substantially cheaper than AGL.

Received a $50 credit for being referred and referrer received a $50 credit also.
