    Lol @ $899 in 12/2020

  • Is this good value for an SSD if I am just using it to store media (videos and pictures and other random stuff)?

    • Yes, it's good for a boot drive as well.

    • Depends how much you want to store, if it's a lot of tv shows etc then just get a hard drive as secondary and a m.2 1-2tb for OS etc.

  • So this SSD or QLC gen 4 version

I just want the large storage for purely Steam Library. Any advice?
And should i be concerned about the TBW having such a large difference between the TLC and QLC drives.

    Thanks

Generally TLC lasts longer as they have higher TBW lifespans.

The QLC one is Gen 4 so faster than this one, however does have more heat.

For a Steam library any of these drives are fine. Steam libraries are normally written once and read many times. Just watch the heat, so don’t stack the QLC on the bottom.

I have seen commentary that it is due to the controller being at fault. Phison E16.

Phison E12(s) and E18 are the good ones.

From reading a few forums, the E16 was rushed to meet the release of the X570 chipset.

      • Phison E12(s) had dram halfed though.

Was reading in reddit about the blue rocket version having swapped components.

        • Yes but from memory this Sabrent 4TB model always had the E12(s) because the controller was made smaller so it could fit four banks of 512GB NAND on each side to make it to 4TB.

So I don't think the 4TB had the opportunity to have x2 the DRAM because of this.

This is from my looking at the reviews and photos of boards on the web during my researching. Never saw a 4TB paired with an E12.

          • @jlogic: Can confirm its got a E12.

  • Has the price gone up for anyone else? its now showing $479.99

    • Still $260. Check the seller or make sure youre logged in with prime

  • This or the 4TB Lexar NM790 for $299 as a steam drive? I know gen 4 vs gen 3, but also dram vs hmb. System supports gen 4.

Currently have a 2tb gen 3 for the steam library but could do with some extra space.

    • The drive uses QLC and is DRAM less. Not sure if it has HMB but I can’t seem to find anything about that on my rudimentary search.

      • It does. Any DRAMless NVMe drive will almost certainly be using HMB.

  • I guess it's expired? It shows 479.99 for me now.

  • Call me conspiracy theorist but I purchased this at a 50% discount during Prime Day, and it's defective on arrival (tried two computers, external caddy and it only ever shows up as a removable drive in Disk Manager and nothing more, not in BIOS or elsewhere, I can't even make a partition)… I think Sabrent sent bad drives to people deliberately because now in amazon, I can't return for a direct replacement with Sabrent and they want a refund instead… the drive is now double the price. I think the had an error on pricing the drive and now are trying to recover the losses. Call me crazy.

Anyone else experiencing issues with their order?

    • Installed mine in the DockCase.

Sabrent adventures in DockCase, a series of photos.

Just using a weak 480Mbps USB C to A cable for now.

The later unrecognised error was the enclosure fouling up after I accidentally triggered its settings restore/restart - other long presses of the button also rudely makes for an unsafe removal. (Unplug replug fixed it.) The only lame thing about this enclosure, the single button control means you can't back out of entering other operational modes (e.g., intended for firmware reception).

Yeah my Sabrent came uninitialised, too (it shows in Disk Management at the very bottom).

So I haven't prepared the drive yet.
Still deciding what I should use it for.
I would normally do something like:

      DISKPART
      LIST DISK
      SELECT DISK #
      DETAIL DISK
      CLEAN
      CONVERT GPT
      CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
      ASSIGN LETTER=F
      EXIT
      FORMAT F: /FS:NTFS /Q

Alright, so I issued those exact commands. No problem. Got me a 3.72 TiB volume.

    • You need to initialise the drive first.

Mine works great so far in an external caddy. Using a proper USB C to USB C cable and getting 750MB/s transfers from internal SSD to external caddy. So happy with the transfer rate.

      • Could you tell me what the current firmware version is from the sabrent utility/tool? I'm just using mine straight out of the box in an unraid server and can see that firmware that I am on but can't see anywhere on the internet what the current firmware is. Don't really want to rip it out and put it in a windows machine to fine out.
