  • Can someone recommend a flattening stone please?

    • I would look for a diamond plate like the Atoma 1200 or 400.

    • +1

you can just use a low grit sandpaper on a flat surface with these stones, easily does the job.

    • Atoma 140 is great IMO, also good for repairing knives. I tried using sandpaper but man it just takes forever. Tried sandpaper on my naniwa chosera stones for almost an hour and didn't fully flatten so went with the atoma and was much much quicker.

  • Mods, thanks for the tidy up and teaching me how to create a table!

This seller excludes the 1000 grit

Came up below the 1500 for me

The 'seller' is Amazon Japan, and as long as you have prime this enables you to buy the stones at around the Japanese market price rather than the inflated prices of international export markets.

The 1000 grit stone is also available, it's just not linked as an option in the listing you posted along with the rest of the series:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B001TPFT0G/

    • Yes, someone else has listed that, so I have not included it on this one.

    • Is this a good price for the 1000?

      • +2

If you were in Japan you could get the Shapton Pro 1000x delivered for around $33 AUD.

Here in Australia $42 delivered is likely to be the cheapest current price available by a comfortable margin.

        • Thanks for that!

  • Which stone for all round general maintenance?

    • +1

      get 1000 and 5000/

Would this be good for a Yaxell knife?

If you are new to sharpening and want guidance on a set, the 320, 1000/1500, and 5000 would be my choice.
320 helps fix/set the bevel and saves time on 1000, the 1000 refines it well and gets it sharp and you could just go the 2 stones if you want. The 5000 polishes it and gets it a bit sharper.

If you want 1 stone, get the 1000
    2 stones, 320 and a 1000/1500
    3 stones, 320, 1000/1500, and 5000

higher grits won't help significantly in sharpness, but if you want shiny by all means go for it.

  • Does annyone know if this brand does a duall version like - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B093BNZ4YV/ref=syn_sd_onsite_de…

1000/5000 or 1000/6000 dual would be ideal as I have very infrequent use.

    • +2

I don't believe Shapton does dual stones, but the Shapton 1000 linked above as a sole stole will leave a better finish than the generic dual grit stone you've linked.

      • A king 1000/6000 if after a dual specifically would be the go

      • Thanks. Pulled the trigger on the 1000
