  • Good price for these. I have one and it works well.

    • accurate ?

      • +1

Yes. I have used one of these rated to 0.01g max 500g and it is accurate, lasts forever as daily driver for weighing coffee 1-3 times a day.

Also 0.1g accuracy is not enough for coffee

        • +2

Why do you need 0.01g accuracy for coffee? There would be no difference in extraction quality with a 0.1g difference in quantity. It's not gold leaf.

          • +1

            @bargainshooter: Drug dealing

          • +1

@bargainshooter: Yeah, you are right, i think i got confused and bought 0.01g upgrading from 1g, not from 0.1g

0.1g difference in coffee is barely noticeble, but 0.5g can clog the pull.
my thinking was that these scales are accurate within a certain range, so for my microdosing purposes i would better off with more accurate cheap scales and if they are rubbish in 0.01g accuracy, they should nail 0.1g at least.

Also, doing math on individual bean with0.01g scales and calculating how many beans are in the puck is fun, but useless and stupid exercise some might argue.

      • +1

Not very accurate. It'll go up and down by about 0.5 grams when taking something off and putting it back on.

    • Does your one work with rechargeables? Like eneloops? I've got one but I'm guessing the eneloops are too weak to power these up so have to use alkalines.

      • Yes

  • +17

I got this for slightly more at $18.79:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BYPFN9RR

Has a stop watch and USB rechargeable, comes with a rubber mat for easier cleaning.

    It works great so far.

    • Thanks, grabbed this one

    • +6

Is there a common use that I'm missing where the stop watch would be useful?

      • +7

        Timing your coffee dosages

      • +7

You can see how long it takes to chug 500g of coffee, and then try and beat it.

      • Weighing drugs

    • Do you use it for coffee ☕, does it still fit well underneath

      • +1

I use it with my v60 decanter that I got via a deal from OzB a few weeks ago. I do not know if the scales will fit underneath espresso baskets, sorry.

  • +5

    does this work for heroin?

    • +5

Not really no, I wouldn't even use this for tapering a caffeine addiction with instant coffee tbh - not sensitive enough.

You'd want something like a GEMINI-20 or similar for anything more sensitive than ground coffee or creatine etc.

Not a bad basic kitchen scale for the price though.

    • If you don't deal more than 3kg at a time…. xD

  • There are 3 options. I'm thinking the 1kg one will be best for weighing beans for a shot of coffee??

    • +6

Damn, how big are your coffees!?

    • If beans is code word for something else…. then yes get it

    • +1

I’m not sure how responsive this scale is but if you want to use it for pour-over or aeropress you might go over 1kg depending on your paraphernalia (which you’ll zero out but I’m guessing is still counted in scale capacity).

  • Damn I just bought this identical looking one for 17.99 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01HCKQG7G

Actually may be identical looking, but mine does 0.05g increments up to 500g, so they are obviously different.

    • Yep grabbed one of these too, have had it in my watch list for a few months

      • I wish Amazon had price protection. Always see stuff cheaper after I buy.

  • +18

    rip off
    Under $10 on ebay
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/304958956220

ebay is always cheaper than Amazon 3rd party seller in 99% of the time.

    • +6

With Amazon you get the false sense of security that thousands of fake or ignorant reviews brings. Plus it's nice to get things next day, even if it's the same thing Aliexpress sells for a third the price.

    • +4

returning junk on amazon is significantly easier

    • +4

U can't return with eBay easily if item doesn't work. And fr experience, some seller claimed to be Australian but takes forever to deliver.

      • +2

as comment below mentioned, the one @ Kmart and BigW is also $10.
        Faulty return is easy.

      • -1

I return things easily all the time on Ebay, user experience much better than Amazom imo

        • Did they cover return post as well?

          • @Bargain-er: Yeah, have had sellers refund without asking for returns as well

            • @Alejandro: Huh… Lucky u! I had the other way around so sticking with Amazon for now :)

              • @Bargain-er: Fair call I guess it depends on the seller. Amazon has also been great for returns for me.

    • +1

It's because Amazon 3rd party sellers have higher cost of business dealing with Amazon rather than eBay generally speaking.

Amazon's advertising revenue is through the roof (up 22% YOY) and there are more ads on pages than ever. This means sellers are forced to fight for pay per click ad spaces which increases prices. The sellers and buyers don't win but Amazon sure as hell does.

      • +2

        The delivery charge is $12.78

        • ah oops.. revoked my neg.

  • +3

There was a prime deal for this around $24 today https://www.amazon.com.au/Ataller-Digital-Function-Multifunc… but I ended up finding this on Aliexpress: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005004836716786.html

    • Not sure if you've purchased that scale from AliExpress already but it is the same one that I've had for about 6 months now. I wouldn't recommend it, it has terrible lag in updating the display to show the weight so it makes it quite difficult to use (pouring liquids, coffee beans etc).

I'm always finding I either have to pour super slow or end up overshooting.

    • Thanks. Nice find on Ali

  • +2

A kitchen scale with all the features of this cost 10 bucks from kmart even a fancier glass one only cost 12.5$. This 10$ one from bigw even comes with batteries

They are all just cheap made in china stuff anyway I dont see why so many folks want to buy from amazon…you arent going to get a better than kmart quality one really

    • -4

I dont see why so many folks want to buy from amazon.

Because they want to feel good and forget about the fact that they are paying $80/year.
Alternatively, I only pay for monthly membership when I need it.
i.e. Black Friday, Boxing day, Prime day.

Most of the time Amazon is either more expensive than other retailers or prime membership is not required.
This year prime day deals are rubbish, saved me $10 membership fee. :)

      • +2

Because they want to feel good and forget about the fact that they are paying $80/year.

Umm no. It comes with Prime Video, Amazon Music, etc. that alone makes it worth more than $80 a year. The deals are a bonus.

      • +1

I’d pay $80 a year for Prime Video alone, even though they don’t have Seinfeld anymore.

    • My digital scales I bought from Kmart twenty years ago is still working today. Measuring my shots every morning.

    • +4

Those ones only measure to the nearest gram though. Some people get really bent out of shape if they have to drink coffee that hasn't been measured to the nearest 0.01 grams and brewed by a $2000+ machine.

      • +1

I mean…If they paid 2 grand for a coffe machine surely they would allocate more budget for an actual good scale?

I would have major doubts about decimal accuracy on a 10 dollar scale. As other ozbargainers pointed out these can be had for less than half if you buy on aliexpress. And in China where these are made they go for like what? 10 Chinese Yuan? thats 2.5$. You are not getting any accuracy on these.

        • I’m looking for something small and cheap to add into my coffee travel kit. The one the OP posted should do nicely.

        • So why bothering linking cheap scales that only have 0.1g increments then? Particularly when they're a 5 kilo scale to start with. A cheap high weight scale without small increments is unlikely to be accurate with lower weights.

I know when I went from my 5KG digital scales (that were bought from a supermarket or similar store) to scales that look the same as the ones in the deal (purchased from eBay though a few years back), I found out that the 5 kilo one was wildly inaccurate the lower the weight got. Like 30 or 40 grams difference under a couple of hundred grams. 4 or 5 grams under 20. If you're measuring those weights, then why bothering measuring if there's that much difference?

The similar to the Amazon one I got seems accurate enough if you go by measuring Australian coins. And compared to another set of lower weight scales I purchased later measure similarly as well. So I think they seem reasonable accurate, but then aren't the ones in the original post, only the same style.

You don't seem to have a problem with the cheapness, only Amazon. Maybe you're only a Kmart fan. :D So link something that 'functions' the same. And by that, I mean is accurate at low weights. Because based on my experience, something like what you linked is likely to be. (Obviously I have a sample set of one, so maybe something went wrong with my 5KG ones, but there is a reason precisions instruments have a range. And maybe the brand of similar scales I got are better than the ones in the OP's post.)

          • @MonkDog: My point is that this isn’t a deal because this is the common price? It’s exactly that its just an el-cheapo scale I dont see the deal in this.

            • @Brrrrt: Yeah, that's probably fair enough. This style of scales generally seems to go for around this.

My point was that you didn't link something better.

              • @MonkDog: Gotcha. I didnt link to something better because Im not knowledgeble in this subject. Didnt want to link a seemly higher quality scale only for it to be the same as these 10 dollar ones. All of them at or around this range seems cheaply made with a random chinese brand name if I have to say so :/ probably all from oems on alibaba

    • +3

      1g precision vs 0.1g, that's a huge difference.

At work the barista has to weight all his shots between 21.4 and 21.6g, and he's using a scale that looks exactly the one from amazon.

  • -1

get the scale with a timer. get this if you are a noob and starting out and waiting for a deal on a timer/scale combo.

  • Variations of this make are crap - won't last long.

Salter kitchen scales have much better reviews, but are more exy..

    • Yeah, Salter have a good reputation in the scales business.
      Soehnle is another good one.

  • I struggle to fit my portafilter on it when measuring my dose. Will definitely replace this with a better one.

    • Yes, was wondering how you "balance" (pun intended) being able to weigh the large, heavy filled portafilter on the scales to weigh the grounds, with being able to fit them on the tray under the cup for weighing the shot.

  • Get this sort of thing from Kmart so when it breaks which it will you can at least get a new one or refund.

  • +1

Rechargable sounds good, but the batteries last forever in these generally.

  • Don’t be cheap everyone knows tanita is the way to go

  • I have these and they work good.

  • not bad, worked for at least a year

  • +1

I'll have to weigh up if its worth the money.

  • Cheers op bought 10 for my online mycology business

  • I would not recommend this. The weight ratio is totally off! The weights keep fluctuating drastically(up to 15g at times). They are not at all consistent. I have three scales and the weight on this is never near the other two. I have tried weighing beans, ground coffee, other pulses and liquids including coffee extract. Leave the item on the scale for a while and see the weights change.

  • +1

Have had one of these for AGES, they're great for coffee as others have said

  • Does it fall under the 'Kitchen' category, so 20% cashback?
