Seriously 35$ for a small strip of leather?

    • Yes, I never really understood it.

    • +3

You're forgetting the metal bits and the laser etched logo.

    • +2

I know! And what if you have key fobs like apartment buildings, gyms, or even car key remotes, garage doors? None of those will fit in this

      • +5

Car key remotes and other non-standard keys can fit on the D ring.

        • Okay, fair I didn't realise about the D ring, but still it would make the entire thing quite bulky

          • +1

@starbearer: It would must be agonising to carry all those key fobes in a pocket. No solution to organising all that into a neat pile after all

          • @starbearer: As someone who lives in an apartment in a city, i find mine great, it does a good job of holding my keys and fob etc. I have a klip on the end so I can remove my carkey when I'm not using it. It won't be for everyone, especially if you carry a ton of keys and fobs, but for my usecase it's awesome!

          • +1

@starbearer: I have a similar product from AliExpress - purchased because I'd seen these but wanted to try the idea before I bought a "proper" one. The AliExpress one works well enough, although the screw holding the whole thing together doesn't stay tight but, which can be annoying having to tighten every few days. This would (hopefully) not be an issue on the "more premium" OrbitKey™ (:P) product.

No more bulky than a keyring of the same keys - less bulky IMO since they're all stacked neatly in on the single shaft.

Purpose of this product (for me) was no bulky, jingly, scratchy collection of keys in my pocket - a nice smooth rectangle of leather with the keys tucked inside. Rest of the family hate it - and to be fair it can be annoying having to poke the key you want out, but I'm happy to deal with those warts for the sake of the aforementioned advantages (IMO).

I still probably won't be buying this deal, for manity's exact reason - $35 for a strip of leather with some metal bits? Yeah, nah.

    • Oh, but what a small strip of leather! In this case it’s not the size, but what you do with it that counts

    • +1

      Yes my yubikey was less.

      • I broke one of those twisting it a bit too hard

    • +1

Think about the implications, $35 for organised keys isn’t too bad of a deal. I have a few orbitkeys and the leather and metal attachments feel high quality.

They are durable except for the paint - one already scratched within a week. Got a replacement one and that hasn’t been scratched yet

  • Is this a bargain?

    • Only time will tell, but the upvotes are mounting…

    • +1

heaps of ebay clones selling cheaper

      • I guess they are cheaper because they will wear down more easily and normally hold less keys

        • -1

have you look at it on ebay?

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204088350094?_trkparms=amclksrc%…

          they practically function the same…

probably hold similar number of keys..
how many keys you want to hold?
When someone buys this they want to hold the least amount of keys as possible (ie 2 to 4 keys max)..

these Orbitkey are just made of leather or fake leather (same type your belt is made of)
either way it will wear down too..
will it take longer? Who knows..

if someone wants to pay $35.92 for 1 then go for it.
but at $6.95 for 1 on ebay, can get 5 on ebay for 34.75
          Which is the better buy?

This device is just a simple design (a leather strap with a metal screw and metal belt clasp)
          not some complex gadget…

          • @pinkybrain:

can get 5 on ebay for 34.75

I can almost guarantee the Orbitkey will last 5 times longer

            • @Ryanek:

I can almost guarantee the Orbitkey will last 5 times longer

              Guarantee?
You sound like you work for them..

Any actual proof to your statement and what if it doesn't last 5 times longer?
Do I come back to you for refund ? LOL?

The thing is just made of the same belt strap like all belt straps
which all get worn out over time…

Rather take the risk with the $6.95 instead of $34.75
for some so call guarantee from some unknown person..
Even if it doesn't last as long,..
who cares, can just get another

              • @pinkybrain: I have an Orbitkey I purchased in November 2015 that I still use daily

Any actual proof to your statement

I don't need to prove anything to you. You're just some dude who doesn't know what they're talking about.

                • @Ryanek:

I don't need to prove anything to you. You're just some dude who doesn't know what they're talking about.

LOL you are the one that made the guarantee statement like it is a fact…
Like you lab test this somehow LOL…

I can almost guarantee the Orbitkey will last 5 times longer

                  Don't make unproven statements then
else you are just some random dude that makes unproven claim just to sound like you know what you are talking about.

You sound like you work for this company..

              • +2

@pinkybrain: I have the original orbitkey and is still going strong for 5 years now. The ebay material will probably won't last that long I believe.

          • @pinkybrain: That's the exact one I have. It works fine but the legit Orbitkey is better.
The orbitkeys screw down system is better. it comes with a piece that acts as a spring and stops it from unscrewing itself, as well as having notches to also prevent unscrewing.
The ebay/ali one will require semi regular tightening with a coin.
Worth the difference? Up to you. $35 for the original one is hardly breaking the bank and you're actually giving money to the company who designed the original one being ripped off.

            • @theguyrules:

The ebay/ali one will require semi regular tightening with a coin.

don't have an issue with this if that is the case..
Regularly use the keys so will check with the screw tightness anyway..

Worth the difference? Up to you. $35 for the original one is hardly breaking the bank.

Yeah That is really up to each person..
the cheaper clone is good if you want to test this type of key organiser..

$35 for the original one is hardly breaking the bank.

              Not about breaking the bank
              This is ozbargain..
people get excited over $5 cashback…

of course we can pay $35 if we wanted..
Just don't see the need to if I can get cheap $6.95 clone
if it does same function to the $35 one then good enough for me even if it wears out a bit more quicker or whatever etc.

Got ebay plus which gives free $5 off so essentially can get the clone one for close to free.

This is like any other products with cheaper versions
if someone wants to pay $50 to $100 belt from myer or david jones so be it
my $10 belt still works fine for me.

      • Yep, and I bought a Ridge wallet clone for $10.

        • Same here, I did get my hands on a real one. It is obviously a huge difference in the material, plastic vs metal. But it functioned the same overall

      • +1

To be fair, these guys ripped off a kickstarter from the US, so this is a clone too.

  • +2

I have been using one for a few years now and very happy with it. I. Have bought no name copies off Amazon too that look the same but have not been durable.
But yes, i think the original sometimes goes on sale for under $30.

  • -4

    Literally nobody:

    Orbitkey:

Let’s make it five times slower to access the key

    • +1

I carry my keys 99.9% of the time. And use them once maybe twice a day.
If they are kept organised and compact that whole time I'm not using them. Than it is worth it

  • Bought one last year and still using it (because I already paid for it).
Imo not worth it besides the look.
I also find it harder to one-hand than your normal key ring set-up.

  • +3

I went from a cheap free keyring to an Orbitkey early this year. I went from holes in my tailored pants pocket, my car key fob being scratched up badly to being better protected by not allowing my house keys touch my keyfob. Yes, it is an expensive strip of leather and key ring, but is it worth it? For the price of $35 today, yes in my opinion.

If you have a car where you don't care about the keyfob being scratched, or have a Tesla which you unlock with your phone, then Orbitkey might not be worth it for you.

  • My canvas one is starting to tear after 3 years, will leather last longer?

    • I think so. The only reason I started using a new orbitkey is because I lost my first one. :(

    • +1

I have a leather one from their original Kickstarter (2013) that currently holds 3 keys plus a bottle opener, with a car fob on the D-ring. It gets daily use. The leather is now quite soft and flops about a bit but generally not an issue. I believe these current leather models are slightly fatter which should offer better shape holding. No problem with tearing on mine.

  • I actually have a cheap aliexpress version of something similar and it's actually fantastic if you have dogs or pets that hear jingling keys and go nuts, because there's no jingling when you touch your keys or remove them from your pockets. I've had my cheapo one for a year or so and it's been worth its weight in gold for that respect. Knowing what I know now I'd probably buy this because my cheapo is starting to show its age in terms of the "leather"

  • +1

I bought one years ago and love it. Makes my keys nice, neat and compact.

  • +1

I have an Aliexpress clone and an original and the original is better, at least for lots of keys - the extender bar works great. The cheapo extender bar isn't as good.
Also the Orbitkey's screw doesn't loosen.

  • with all the smart door lock + Tesla deal, who need keys?

  • I’m still using the one from Athena and they’re great.

  • Only 2 colours now at the $35.92 price.
