CPAP Machine- Need One ASAP

Recently found out I have severe Sleep Apnea.

Looking at getting a machine that is quiet, reliable and relatively affordable. I've been recommended the Philips Dream Family range, however I've also heard Resmed is the way to go.

I use ResMed - happy with it

Had one problem with machine maybe 2.5 year mark but they fixed it and gave me a loaner machine while they did.

I also have ResMed machine for 4 odd years… hasnt let me down. Just needed air pressure adjusted few times.

  • My moms uses one, makes her sound and look a bit like Darth Vader using a vibrator.

      How many 'moms' you got?

That's an image I didn't need to have.

      • I did. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I've been using Resmed since 2008.
Bought a Resmed S9 in 2008. It's like the Camry of CPAP machines. It started telling me that 'Motor Life Exceeded, please see service provider ' but no operational issues, so I kept using it.
They say the normal life span is about 5 years.
Have replaced this year with a Reamed S10 autoset and have kept the S9 (Still operational) for back up.

I did a trial for three weeks with a Resmed machine, and aside from finding the correct mask that felt comfortable and provided a good seal, the only issue I had was wind build up in tummy which wakes you up needing to burp. I was told it was because I needed a pretty high pressure, so may not apply to you.

Overall I was quite happy with the Resmed, but haven't tried Philips, so can't compare.

  • I've been using a Resmed S10 for years, no issues. I also have a Resmed AirMini for work travel.

The more important issue is finding a mask (style) and brand that is most comfortable. That will take some experimentation.

agree. and at the price the masks are that can be fawkin expensive…. And they do take getting used to.

It also depends if your a nose or mouth breather in your sleep…

i tried the small nasal mask but didnt like it, back to a overnose/chin mask.
anyone found cheaper than 'genuine' masks?

  • been using phillips dreamstation with humidifier for last 5 years.
aside from mask replacements annually, have only replaced 1 hose in last year
    no problems, fairly quiet

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone

Phillips is now being sued (cpap) after dream machine faults were dumping bits of decayed foam into air stream I have a ResMed with humidifier works well also helps to get a heated tube

  • Have you done a sleep study. CPAP Direct offer a home study, worth asking about.

It was discovered that I have central as well as obstructive apneas and require a VPAP instead of CPAP. Using a CPAP for me is the same as not using one at all.

I utilise nasal pillows with Resmed equipment and find the whole thing very comfortable but daily maintenance, washing bits and keeping water clean and refreshed in the humidifier bath must be kept up. Part of my daily routine and doesn't take long.

    • I did. Company who did it recommended a plan for me, $5000 and that covers the machine, masks and advice over a 5 year period. Honestly, I thought $5000 was taking the piss.

      • Yeah that is definitely taking the piss.

Not sure what the criteria is but a neighbour mentioned that they are eligible for the Life Support Energy Rebate as they need to use a CPAP device (in NSW).
Their doctor had to fill in a form and then they submitted to their electricity provider.
May be worth looking in to or maybe asking your doctor if it applies to you.

    • I just looked it up after reading this. $0.36 per day if its a part-time positive airway pressure device and $0.71 per day if it's required 24 hours continuously.
Might bring the form in whenever I need to see the doctor next!

      • Glad that helped - at least it's $30-$60 off the quarterly power bill.

  • Hi guys,

I am using lowenstein prisma 20a cpap device and also installed Prisma app on mobile to look at the data however I'm looking for any similar windows based software like OSCAR for my device that I can download so I can use my laptop to analyse the CPAP data.

Would you know of any software which I can use for my lowenstein prisma 20a device?

OSCAR & Sleep HQ app doesn't work for this device

    Thanks
