Took a look at one in store recently - wow the quality has taken an absolute nosedive in recent years.
Compared to the one I bought in the mid-2010's, this thing feels like cling wrap in my hands.
Don't think I'd recommend it even at a low price of $80-$100 for how awful and plastic-y it felt.
I'd like a non-puffy puffer jacket, that'll keep me warm in Brisbane winters/windy (?), so maybe that's a positive for me? Though durability/long lasting is still required.
just get a lined hoodie, its all you need, and maybe a size up lightweight shell for rainforest walks etc.
They're honestly still very boofy, so I'm not sure that will help - the Uniqlo ones are cheap, very flat, and honestly probably even better built than these Macpacs now that quality has nosedived so hard
Macpac got bought out by Super Retail Group (who also own BCF) in 2018; that's why so many BCFs turned into Macpacs.
Given Kathmandu's success I always expected that at some point they'd decide venture downmarket and try to compete there.
Mountain Designs also got bought out by Spotlight/Anaconda in 2018.
Which I think leaves only Paddy Pallin as a national chain carrying higher end hiking gear? (there's still all the little independents but they tend to be even more expensive as they have no economies of scale).
I took at look at one in-store recently and my super cheap down sweaters from Nepal are at least as good, possibly better. I'd sooner wear my Uniqlo than go back to a brand that's crashed so hard- I remember Macpac from the 90s and it was good stuff then.

whats best way to wash &maintain such feather jackets?
we made mistake of usual washingmashine cycle and it's kiinda patchy clumped now
Just bought one at bcf, asked the same question. Instructions said to wash with gentle detergent then air dry. Once dry run it for 1-2 cycles in the drier on cold to fluff it up again.
Hand wash in a basin or bathtub using a small amount of down wash or pure soap- not normal laundry detergent. Dry it flat for a while until a fair bit of the water is gone, then toss it into a tumble drier with some tennis balls on low heat.
The reasons for avoiding normal detergents- they can strip out all the oils, or leave weird residues that interfere with down loft. The reason the the drying- when it's totally soggy the down is too heavy and can tear the fabric (less of a problem with these ultra-basic jackets with sewn-through construction and no internal baffling), but you do want to tumble dry when there is a bit less water so the down doesn't clump up into lumps.

RRP $279.99….now that's funny.I've owned a couple of these but won't buy again.They've been washed in the special detergent from Patagonia in a Front Loader machine/dried on a hanger in the shade/then in the dryer on a Cool setting with two tennis balls etc.etc.but the pile never properly returned.
