Update: You can get this for $99.99 from BCF as well. If you sign up for the BCF My Club membership you get $20 off a $100 order so if you were to add something small in value like this peg for $2.10 to the cart, select click and collect and it is cheaper! The code used after sign up is CLUB20OFF. Note that BCF has different colours available than the official Macpac store which are listed below. It appears BCF has limited the use of the CLUB20OFF code as I receive the following message: Coupon code "CLUB20OFF" cannot currently be added to your cart. Congrats to those who snagged one before the change.

Club BCF method still works, you may need to wait a few hours for the CLUB20OFF code to work for a new account.

Pros: warm enough to handle freezing cold

Cons : 1. Arms too long
    2. No hoodie

    • +9

With the "Arms too long" is that because your arms are shorter than normal? Because with shirt sizes you can get different sleeve lengths.

Not everyone wants a hoodie with this

      • I way prefer no hood on my puffers. Just gets annoying when I'm wearing it during relax.

      • Yup, I got a Kathmandu one for my birthday from the parents and I was so relieved when it didn't have a hood. What a pain in the arse hoodies are.

    • Target have some puffers on clearance for $40/50 (Cranbourne) with hoodies that done come off :( But warm as phark

        That's the hooded version….🤦

  • +18

Before anyone asks (because this gets asked every time a deal on one of these gets posted), the sizes (at least the mens) run large. I generally wear a Medium in everything, however have a Small size of this jacket which fits really well.

    • +3

YMMV because I normally wear medium but have a large of this

    • +11

That's because people here usually wear it with just a shirt underneath but it is likely designed to be worn over base and mid layers.

      • -6

I've got so many different brands of winter jacket, and all are sized the same as my t-shirts.

With one exception - one jacket is obviously sized differently, and that's extremely deliberate from the company- Patagonia DAS parker which is designed to be worn over multiple inner, mid and outer shells + a full helmet in sub zero conditions. And TBH I can still wear it with just a t-shirt and a long shirt underneath, it would still be fine.

If macpac can't size a wimpy little warm weather jacket correctly, it's on their designers, not on the user.

        • +1

So its ok for Patagonia to design a jacket with room to fit layers underneath but Macpac isn't? lol As for the Patagonia being designed for use over a helmet, it didn't even come close to being able to fit over my helmet so i guess they must be shite as well using you're theory.

          • -2

@8azinga: Have you ever used a DAS parker, or know what they're for?

This Macpac jacket is a piece of urban lightweight junk. Last time I paid attention to this brand, they were something good.

Looks like they've taken a huge nosedive while I've been away.

            • @rumblytangara: If you bothered to read my comment, you would know I've tried one on before which is why i know it didnt fit over my helmet so i know what the DAS parker is. Sure, they are different products but the Halo is still designed to be used over multiple layers so there would be expected space if just worn over a t shirt.

    • Pretty much this. I bought the XS size and even then that's still slightly too big for me.

      • and what size are you normally?

        • +1

          I usually wear S.

    • Depends if you're built like a twig.

I wear medium/large of most things and a large in the Mac Pac is perfect for me.

They are designed a bit bigger so you can wear multiple layers like jumpers/hoodies underneath them.

      • +14

so ozbargainers who went hard on the KFC deals just get their regular size then

      • I normally find a tshirt underneath is more than warm enough. Where people live in Australia that needs to wear layers like jumper with the Macpac on top? This must be so toasty/hot.

        • +1

2°c in Melbourne the past few mornings. I'll layer up thank you very much. Shirt + Wool Jumper + Macpac.

          -6 Canberra this week @7am

I wear male M t-shirts with M pullover on top. Have both a XS and S Macpac Halo. XS fits fine, could be longer in the chest. S is comfortably loose.

    • +1

I normally wear M for jackets and hoodies but size S fits me well

  • I've been thinking about getting one of these since and upgrading from my 2017 Uniqlo puffer jacket. Would this be any better?

    • +2

Not sure about the 2017 version you have, but for the link you posted, this one's going to be more like a sidegrade. I tried the Uniqlo Down Parka last week and I found them to be similar in thickness and warmth. The main difference here is that the Macpac jacket can be folded into its pocket for portability, but this comes at the cost of the poorer shell material. If you don't need this feature, I'd say keep your money and just use the Uniqlo jacket.

As a disclaimer, I compared the two in-store. I didn't take them outside in the cold or anything like that.

    • +3

Doubt it. The Macpac uses a moderate amount of low quality (80/20 600 loft) down. It's nothing special.

I checked out some of the lighter weight Macpac down jackets over the weekend in a store and the shell fabric was flimsy AF and had enough filling for a cool spring evening. I've got dirt cheap Nepalese jackets that gave me more confidence than this current incarnation of Macpac.

      • Damn. If that's the case any recommendations on a replacement? My Uniqlo one has definitely seen better days and I'm noticing the feathers are starting to come out of the seams more than it has in previous years.
I'm not too fussy around the price (I mean obviously not Moncler) provided it would survive me a good amount of time.

        • +2

          aldi $50

  • +4

I have a halo jacket from a few years ago and i got another one last week on special. The shell definately feels a little thinner on the new one like they're using a slightly cheaper material. The new owners seems keen to run the brand to the ground with their constant sales.

  • How do people wear this inside a gym? So sweaty and then you can't wear it anywhere lol

    • +1

They live and breathe in their puffer 24/7 because they have no self awareness and are lazy slobs. These are the same people you see wearing these into summer until they finally realise they are cooked.

    • how long does it take for the gift card to be delivered? it says uo to 24 hours

      • +1

For me it was almost immediate… Within 2 minutes…

        • awesome thank you

Free shipping at BCF no longer applies once you use the CLUBOFF20 code, still end up ahead though.

If you're with Commbank, check rewards and you might have a cashback as well.

  • was on the fence about buying the down jacket when it was $120, glad i waited :D

  • +1

Is the cut different between men and womens? Looks like shorter sleeves? The grey womens one is easily the nicest colour

    • The grey womens one is easily the nicest colour

Agree. Though I personally hoped there would be white

    • Women's one seem to have less feathers and weighs less compared to men's. My wife and i bought 2 of the same size (1 men, 1, women cut) and noticed they weigh differently

  • Never found these to be massively warm, might work better with proper layering but putting one over a business shirt to walk home at night or sitting at the pub after work doesn't keep me that warm. Ended up upgrading to a more expensive Macpac jacket.

    • These perform best when they are a snug fit over the base or mid layer. I’ve noticed a loose jacket doesn’t keep me as warm.

  • +3

Macpac Halo is a great puffer jacket for the price. I’ve got two of these apart from a few Patagonia and Arcteryx puffer jackets.
If you require a jacket for everyday wear that is light and warm this is the one. I’d prefer Macpac over Kathmandu and TNF.
    Just my 2 bobs.

    • Do these pack down small? Thinking for cold days/nights off the bike while motorcycle touring

      • About as small as a roll of kitchen paper towel, maybe a bit smaller.

      • +1

These can compress into a small pouch they come in. Very handy. These jackets are water repellent but not waterproof.

  • great

  • Noob question, how is the macpac one compare to Uniqlo down jacket?

    • I've found the macpac to be warmer, but also heavier. I don't mind it as I needed to wear something above my uniqlo to block out the wind, where as I don't need to anything extra for this. However, the sizes do run large for macpac, so you can think of macpac as more of an outer layer jacket, and uniqlo is good as an inner layer that you don't even feel / notice.

    • macpac puffiness > uniqlo puffiness

  • +2

I've got both this and the hooded version. The hooded version is worth the extra $30.

  • Black or Navy for men? I hope L will do me..

I have commbank but think the reward disappeared.. does that entertainment app still work?

  • I get this error: Coupon code "CLUB20OFF" cannot currently be added to your cart.
    Entering under "Coupon"

    • just remember you need to spend minimum $100 to use that coupon after you signed up

    • damn im getting that too, my amount is 102.99 and still getting the error

      • Same amount is 101 but coupon not working

    • Same… =(

    • I've just tried myself and can confirm no longer working. Updated post thx.

I just spoke to someone via online chat. She seemed to think the code should work and asked me to try again tonight or tomorrow morning (I just made an account this morning), and if I don't have any luck they'll manually apply the discount. So may be worth chatting to someone.

        Fingers crossed they honour it!

        • i did this too, spoke someone via chat and they applied the 20 dollar credit to my account.

i didnt need the extra item to make it $100 bucks. wooots imma happy camper

          • @PreSsieGuY: Update: apparently my account wasn't linked to my membership, which another agent helped to do. The code now works again.

            • @fuujisanyo: wonder how that works? i created my account then got sent email about the promo. maybe a sign up process gone wrong.

I tried on the (hooded) Halo from last week's OzB and agree with the comment the shell feels like a thin plastic bag, plus the side pockets are extremely shallow and barely come to my wrist. Compared to my Marmot which has lovely deep pockets - I can leave a pair of gloves in there and my hands are still fully covered.
If you're interested in serious warmth can I suggest the Sundowner (I bought with hood). All these models are 600 loft however being RDS Down I checked my batch and it measured at 720 loft. Plus the Sundowner hooded is 263g fill weight compared to the Halo at 219/205 with/without hood. Proper pockets and zip off hood. Allowing for the fact I would always wear a jumper under this jacket and am normally size M then an M in this jacket is perfect for me.
I appreciate the discounted price ($430>$215) is twice that of the Halo, but I think the better design and warmth make it worth it. At least consider.

    • picked mine up over the weekend, definitely feels very plastic-y but can't complain at $80. My other down jackets are definitely higher quality but are also $200+.

I did have a Champion Puffer jacket a couple years back with a detachable hoodie which I picked up for $90. Felt much higher quality than the Macpac, felt like the Michelin Man. Too bad I had slimmed down and it became too big for me, just gave it to a family member

  • They finally did the sub-$100 deal again! Thought it would never happen again in this economy.

  • I tried on the halo a few weeks back, and as I said in the other deal, the quality didn't appear to be like what it was a year ago. My wife's halo jacket looks and feels very different to what I saw in the shop this time around.

I ended up buying an Under Armour down jacket from BCF for about $139 with discounted gift cards. The quality seems much better. It also has large inside pickets, and the cut is more suited to me (6", slim). I would recommend that over the halo.

  • Poor rep declined to add voucher code into my account, said its already on sale :(

  • Target have some puffers on clearance for $40/50 (Cranbourne) with hoodies that done come off :( But warm as phark

also sleeveless with no hoods and few other types for $50

  • If your CLUB20OFF didn't work earlier, try again. I chatted with chat rep and she said it may take up to 4 hours for code to be enabled.

I got my code this morning at 7:45am…..didn't work just after 8am. It's now just worked and purchased the hooded version for $109.99 :)

    • Ah yes I just re-tried after trying this morning and I too can do the discount again. I have updated the post thank you!

  • Are the men's halo V1 or V2?

    • V2s :(

      • Any difference between v1 and v2?

        Have a hooded v1 and want a non-hooded

        • +7

V1 Rocket only had a operating speed of ~640km/h. The V2 could fly at speeds up to 5,760 km/h and had a slightly increased range over the V1. The V2 could also fly at altitudes of up to 88km, whereas the V1 flew at only about 1km AMSL.

  • Order Packed. Hopefully dispatched this afternoon w/ tracking

I saw this at dfo. Wanted to see what the hype was about. Outer shell felt super flimsy. I'm usually a medium in men's and felt the L was more comfy. In the end didn't need it as i got an old school Columbia jacket with separable fleece jacket and waterproof shell.

Might try a cheap puffer that I won't mind if sucks/gets wrecked

  • -2

Went to the store to try this out… this looks and feels like purchase that will be in the bin pretty quick.

The outer material is so thin and flimsy it looks like if you snag it on anything it will tear right apart. Definitely not worth the $99 let alone the original price.

Went to the Kathmandu and tried their version and definitely feels superior in terms of the the outer material. However it is priced another $80 on top. Would only start to look at that if they knocked another $50 off that price.

  • These are great for the apartment during winter time and cooler months. Snug and warm. I wish they made them in pants too.
