Tamron 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Sony FE $639.20 Delivered (20% off) @ digiDirect eBay

Original Coupon Deal

This is a good price for a great travel telezoom lens that has been well reviewed.
I have the 200-600mm but it's not always convenient to take out and about in case you just happen to spot some birds. (or whales, or F1 cars etc)

It's 10% off on their retail site ($719.20) so there's no jacking from the standard $799 RRP here. This price is also below the cheapest grey importer (about $670 + $20 postage), but from a reputable authorised importer.

  • any recommendations for a moderate zoom lense to fit my old SONY A7?
travelling to africa and wanting to do a few safari pics

is it just an A7, or a newer model?

Depending on if budget or size is your limiting factor the Sony 100-400mm or the Tamron 50-400mm are both available at digi direct ebay.

I personally use the 200-600mm and it’s better value than the 100-400mm to be sure.
For Safari I would definitely get the Sony 600mm if your budget and arms can support it, it’s smaller and lighter than the sigma equivalent (I previously owned the S version).

If you’re using the original A7 mark 1 you’ll need a Sony lens with OSS.

    • I'd be keen on this too - i'm looking for an all rounder lens for a new a7iv which i'll get later this year.

      For the same safari reason.

A7iv is a crop so the Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS (SEL70350G) would give you lots of reach in relatively small and light lens with stabilisation for just over a grand. On safari you need all the reach you can get if you want spectacular images. 600mm is obviously better, but they get pricey, and I never really found a use for them OTHER than on Safari. Maybe buy one and sell it when you get back.

It's also worth carrying something that is great in low light for those early mornings or late afternoon game drives.

A7iv is a crop? i thought is is full frame, also offering crop mode? kindly correct me if I am wrong. i am still new to sony

          • @langitbiru: A7iv is full frame. You can use the 70-350 in crop mode but that reduces the pixel count to around 14mp which isn't great for photos. The crop mode works better for video.

@Goonos: Please don’t buy an APS-C lens for a full frame camera.

As mentioned one of the sigma or Tamron 100-40mm would be your be set bet

Sigma 100-400 as a budget 1kg lens is my recommendation. 200-600 would give you more wiggle room for reach but is around 2kg so really comes down to size/weight. I used a Canon FD 300 F4.0 L manual focus on a M43 (16mp) body to get around 600mm on Safari which I found more than enough. A7 with 24mp has more room for cropping should you need more reach. It also depends on where your going for Safari too. I found animals got really close to my car. Could have just been luck but really didn't need that much zoom range.

      • The Sigma is ~$919 at the moment too.

i like the Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 as an all purpose lens. not too heavy. fantastic coverage. good size and balance on body even without battery grip.
however - a7 og has no 5 axis ibis like the a7iii, so try to keep your shutter 1/ focal length where possible at minimum

It’s fairly good, considering it’s zoom range.
I personally use the 35-150 F2-2.8, but given the scope of the question, the 50-400mm might be a better candidate and it comes down to about $1600 in this sale may be a better buy.
