I was looking at Sony Reader before I came across this deal. Can't resist as it's half price compared to Sony. Sony only does ePub, txt and PDF. Kindle does more like mobi and azw, so it's not what you were thinking…..

Yes tablet/PC can read ebooks but how long can you stare at non-eink screen for?

People want single function devices because they are best at what they are designed to do instead of being ok at a bunch of things they are really good at one thing.

Eink is very different from TFT or LCD etc.

my teleporter watch is always in the shop - just sayin'

My wife has a Kindle and an iPad.

The kindle is smaller, lighter, drops into her bag, can read in full sunlight (as it isn't colour) and will let her read for around 3 months between charges. THAT is why you use a kindle.

    • Looks like you've never actually tried reading LCD and e-ink for long periods. And in sunlight. Or holding a tablet and an e-reader in bed. Come back when you have.

I still wear a "single-function device". I can tell the time with a glance rather than having to pull my phone out of my pocket and activate its screen. Single function devices are often very good at doing what they do.
      …just sayin' :-)

    • I started reading ebooks on Desire HD about 2 years ago and have since upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, I read about 2 hours a day (up to maybe 4 hours when reading a really good book) on it without any issues. I admit it is not as nice as using a kindle but it is sufficient for me, I have found using a black background with the white writing makes it much easier on my eyes.

I want to get a kindle but I just cannot justify another gadget to carry around with me when I have my phone on me all the time.

If there was a way to sync your current location in a book between devices I would maybe make the leap (there may be something like this available but haven't really looked into it).

      • Huh? Sync to last page read already happens with Amazon e-books, provided the device is online.

Actually the fact that Amazon knows what and when you read in e-books is another privacy concern.

    • BATTERY & E-INK
      Enough said.

  • Which kindle is this?

    • I would say the same as last deal, the Kindle keyboard edition with WiFi only (no touch & no 3g)

  • I do note there are some customized roms available which enable you to run dual systems on kindle. You can read all file types by doing that.

  • Amazon is holding a press event on 6th. They might announce a new Kindle and the prices for this will drop more. Just a thought…

  • Scanned at $60 at my local and $13 for kindle cases.

    • Where's that? Don't mind another as a gift.

        • Plus your 5% discount for being staff. Very nice.

Been asking my local Woolies around Woodvale WA, and no luck for any in store as yet (Woodvale, Joondalup, Beldon, Whitfords, Warwick, Kingsway, Currambine). That is when I finally get through to staff that they actually do sell Kindles, as they are behind the counter (Not on show) in my stores.

Worth a try to get one anyway. Thanks to original poster and for your receipt too kevsta89

  • I picked up a Kindle keyboard with 3g for $131 from Woolies in Stirling last week, seemed like a good price for the 3g version, the lady mentioned it scanned at around $80 off RRP, but that she wasn't aware of any current deals on offer.
