nice, tempting to replace my A6000

but then again I've taken 0 photo since covid.

    • +1

A6000 is still capable, its my back up cam. Put the $ towards a photo trip to NZ south island. Thank me later.

      • +1

This is definitely overkill for occasionally taking photos over the a6000.

Video is a different story but I'd save your money and go on a holiday instead.

      • +2

You just need a good lens

  • Viewed in the app and "Limited quantity available" in this case is 9 pieces left.

  • I'm new to photography. Is this the right camera for me? Or should I get a cheap full frame such as Z5, RP for the similiar price?

    • +7

Buy used instead and save $. If you don’t pursue it then you can resell without much hit

      • -2

On the contrary for these type of products I'd only ever buy new. Just like this deal there's quite often 20% off most models and occasionally you can stack with Sony cashbacks for an even better deal. Just look at the 2nd hand market for all the popular models and they are almost always the same price or even more than buying new at a discount.

Unless you want to go super budget and buy a camera that's much older like a Nex 5.

I'd suggest for photography at this price get a cheaper full frame camera, as long as you can budget for more expensive glass.

        • +2

A Sony A6000 is about $300-$500 second hand with kit lens and is more than enough for most people.

          the A6300 / A6500 is about $700 / $900 second hand.

          In short: no.

        • I agree with the point about buying cheaper full frame camera - it is true that Panasonic and Nikon FF can be had for 1400-1500$ on FB marketplace, maybe even lower if they're desperate enough.

But buying a brand new gear is a pretty silly move unless it's like X100V or Ricoh GR that could hold their value well. ICL mirrorless.. not a chance, horrible resale value from experience…

          • +1

@dukeGR4: I'd disagree. I've bought new, used and then sold multiple Sony A7 III/IVs/A7Cs for break even. Its at the point where if I feel like I need a second body I just buy one and sell it after I've used it to avoid depreciation of the gear itself… as long as you keep it in good condition there seems to be plenty of people willing to pay for them.

Might depend on the brand though, tried Canon as a once off and the R5 and RF lenses were much harder to sell at the prices I wanted than the Sony equivalent bodies/lenses which I normally deal with.

            • @eecan:

              sold multiple Sony A7 III/IVs/A7Cs

Likely one off as it's due to covid, chip-shortage and supply chain related issue towards the end of Covid. If you picked up a body ie. A7C or A7iii during the middle of the covid, sure you can even make a tiny bit of profit. Will be challenging to replicate it again even on a Sony body unless you get a darn good deal on OzBargain, like that $1699 A7C.

      • With price matching and cashrewards/shopback I've found you can buy new Sony bodies/lens and resell them after use without much of a hit either though lol.

    • Although I am a canon guy, you do have more lens options for Sony, which means it may save you some money. I do find Canon's, much intuitive especially for beginners but Sony has been improving the last few years. This ain't bad at all. With this price point though, you can get a second hand Canon R6, which is a full frame.

      • Physical size can be a factor though. This has a TINY body, and has smaller lenses (due to APS-C sensor).

        • I am aware of that. I had a 6600. The R6 is not too massive and is kinda light for a full-frame and the ergonomics is kinda good, which makes it a lot easier to hold. RP is defintely closer in size but it's so old and have a tiny battery I wouldn't personally recommend it.

But yeah, have a feel in-store if you can. Full frame cameras will always have bigger lenses too so that's something to consider. I do like the size of this especially when travelling.

        • +2

anything that is not pocketable is not tiny tbh. and if you happen to be a bokeh whore like me you're gonna put a giant foreskin of a lens in front and nek minute your so called "TINY" body is as big as any traditional big ass DSLR, but maybe 20% lighter. As far as footprint is concerned it is still the same haha.

      • you can get a second hand Canon R6, which is a full frame.

the cheapest non-scam option available is around 2k+…. i did find a few for around 1.5k -1.8k, those are definitely scams as they have the same picture.

you're better off with Panasonic and Nikon Z. Both depreciate like shit. Panasonic L-Mount Alliance in theory is the next Sony FE. Sigma alone is pumping out lenses like there's no tomorrow.

    • Long time shooter here, I strongly suggest getting a good pocketable APS-C. Don't join the ranks of thousands of people who buy an expensive camera they use a handful of times and then forget about.

      • Don't join the ranks of thousands of people who buy an expensive camera they use a handful of times and then forget about.

guilty as charged, all the gear but zero will to shoot these days. just acquired a Ricoh GRiiix, if i like it I will pick up a used X70 as my 28mm-equivalent body.

      • What would you recommend?

      • good luck finding any apart from the ricoh which doesnt even have a viewfinder

  • Damn, i was going to wait for a price drop (ie, thinking maybe in a few months time)… this price is very enticing, but a bit too soon!

    • try price matching at the sony store, you can leave it in your cart til you decide to buy.

      • Interesting, I wonder if the Sony store will match a price behind an ebay coupon.

        • they have done it before. give it a try.

        • +2

I just did, it's in my cart now. Thanks OP!

          • @tokyo: me too!

And I just noticed i have a $100 off $500 spend at the sony store via my amex (expires in 4 days). Getting hard to resist!

Just need cashrewards or shopback to up their rate from 1.75/2% and I won't be able to.

            • @aeon: Just check if the rebate is applicable to price matched items.

          • @tokyo: Nice!

          • @tokyo: Dang, they've ignored my price match requests :(

  • Any deals on the Sony ZV-E10?

  • +2

Great deal for an awesome camera at launch date. Thanks for posting just in time. I was about to complete the purchase with JB Hifi pricematching Digidirects advertised price at @ $2288 - they were willing to do $2260 delivered bu this blows it out of the water!

    • ha, good timing then.

    • I did price match just like you with Fuji x-s20 15-45mm kit, and the guy from JB beat the price then i paid 1k950. From Digi i found body only would cost 1k830, but JB only has the kit in stock

    • I was just about to do the same as I am travelling soon. Cant believe a 20% discount on a brand new gear on release date. How good.

  • I got the ZV-E1. Nearly bought this one though. Great find

  • Great price, really like that they added the front scroll wheel to these bodies, that's something that was always painfully missing from the compact lines. A bit disappointed about the lack of support for CF type A cards since I already have some for my other Sony bodies and the Angelbird CF type A cards are better value for both speed/capacity than high capacity V90 SD cards.

Just got shipping notification, expected delivery tomorrow to SA! Days before official launch on 1/8/23. And at a sizeable discount off RRP.

    • Wow, nice! Hopefully Aus post doesn’t do the usual Syd-Perth-Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth-…

      • Have the thing in hand now. The box is not sticker-sealed, and no sticky film on the LCD display - though I do remember some Sony lenses I have bought previously also did not have sealing stickers. Surprised that we can have it in hand already before the official launch date. No fingerprints and everything seems pretty clean though.

        • Nice! I have purchased Sony bodies before and they were not sealed boxes. Some lenses but other don’t.

          • @snvl: The ZV-E10 I bought last year was sealed but it was a kit (the kit lens is pretty much the only lens I don't use anymore!).
Not much in this box, just the body, one battery, body cap, eyepiece insert, hot shoe cover, and a crappy strap. No USB-C cable, no charger.
I've done the initial phone pairing and setup. Charging up from empty now before I play with the extensive range of settings later on.

            • -1

@zoomjc: Blame Apple. They removed charger and everyone else follow

          • @snvl: Yeah I've ordered directly from Sony many times as well and I would say probably about 60-80% of the time I don't get a sealed box.

And for those looking for a couple of spare NP-FZ100 batteries and a charger, the SmallRig kit on eBay:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285267158825
I offered $81 which was expected, then used the JAU17 code to bring the price down to $67.23 for 2 batteries and a charger.

They may accept a lower offer but I am super happy with the price for the kit. Now just need Smallrig to release the cage.

    • Thx, do they have the batteries with usb-c port?

      Edit: found it https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285400224519

      Expensive

      Edit2: 2400mah vs 2040mah

Depending on what offer they accept, but not worth it for the listed price (with the JAU17 code) IMO. I don't get the point of directly charging via USB tbh. With my ZV-E10, I usually have my charged spares ready to go and when charging I tend to use the dual charger to charge 2 at a time at the end of the day.
Having 2 spares trump a single battery with a higher capacity.

        • No need to carry a Charger, just a cable

Been watching Sony a6700 on YouTube since it was introduced. Ordered it as soon as I saw this post thinking I may not receive this much discount in the near future 😅. Massive upgrade from a6000. Thanks OP 🥳

  • A6700 or Fujifilm x-s20 ? They are quite similar in spec and price Which one is for beginners? Mainly taking photo and some video.

    • As you said, similar. AF on the Sony is a bit better, Fuji has some nice features. What lenses are you planning to get?

      • I don't have any existing lens. My budget is limited as my first camera. Which lens are better value and quality ? Sony or Fujifilm?

        • I find Sony has cheaper and better range of third party lenses which are cheaper and better if you are starting out. Also AF is unmatched by Fuji.
