wow interesting news about physical media… would have surely thought they'd release 4K Blu-Ray at least, especially for Dolby Atmos audio that's usually heavily compressed through streaming.

    • +4

For sure. It's probably a minority of us with proper home theatre setups but the difference in sound between streamed content vs that on disc is drastic when comparing atmos mixes.

      • +3

Probably not as relevant today, but this was a fantastic comparison video for 4K Bluray vs Disney+'s Dolby Vision releases.

If they don't want our money, I have no issue in sailing the high seas for remuxes.

        • Problem is you you wont be able to get an uncompressed copy even if they remove all physical releases

    • +2

If Disney+ isn't doing well, a way to prop it up is to kill physical media and try an push everyone to get a subscription, paying again and again for anything in the back catalogue that's worth rewatching.

If it works in Oz, it will be rolled out to the rest of the world

      • +8

Or it'll prop more people to sail the high seas

      • Totally, came here to say this.

Subscription makes Disney more than physical media and they want growth, growth, growth. Ah well I don’t like much Disney other than Star Wars but there won’t be any more of them (main line story movies).

        • That may be a good thing - no more main like sorry movies - at least until they change management or direction.

    • +3

Does this include Pixar? This (profanity) sucks, I love buying physical copies of movies I really love

    • +8

Going forward, a lack of physical discs being ripped and shared will mean the only copies of films available to have offline are compressed and substandard too.

Aside from the massive catalogue and monopoly that Disney has on so many franchises, I would've thought physical sales to be able to keep kids occupied when internet is patchy or out to still have some kind of market.

Personally hate the idea that as soon as there's no internet, being able to watch a favourite TV show, movie or even listen to your choice of music isn't an option. "You will own nothing and be happy", ummm no thanks.

      • Does Disney subscription allow downloading to device? That's what Netflix allowed me to do when I travelled

    • +3

Just like LPs it will come back as a fancy to have, and they will charge $70 for one instead of $15

      • It’s already well on its way overseas

    • +1

4K doesn't have region coding so to be honest this recent development does not impact me much because all my recent 4K purchases have been from overseas since the number of titles out here is a joke. Streaming and downloads look atrocious on my 4m home cinema and of course I want discs that take full advantage of my 7.1.2 setup

  • +5

Disney can stick it if that's true… Maybe if Disney had a better lower rrp then more people would buy. Need 30%-40% off to make it worthwhile esp on those $40 releases. I don't have Disney+ but gotg 3 is going up there in a few days before the physical copy. Goes to show they care more about streaming than disc sales

    • +1

They need to charge $40 because most of the content being released doesn't do well in cinema.

      • This seems to be them saying they dont need the $40.

    • Honestly why wouldnt they stop physical releases in Australia. JB-Hifi is really the only major store selling movies, and the majority would just stream instead of waiting for however long it takes for an online retailer to send them out.

      • I've bought blu-rays from Aussie ebay stores that get delivered before they're on JB shelves

    • +1

its true. sorry mate. they are doing it to make everyone pay for disney plus. i like the quality compared to other streaming services but no way does it compare to blu ray.

  • +14

That is some absolute garbage from Disney.

  • +2

I have no intention of getting a Disney+ sub

Anything they have I'm interested in I'll get from another source :)

Buy 2 get 1 free on TV Shows too. Anyone want to group together for Last of Us on 4K UHD, works out at $32 each? I’m Brisbane based. DM me if keen

    • I almost posted the same thing last week but ended up just buying it. If you find a third I'll consider returning it and grouping with you though :p that's a hell of a deal.

Wow this link is suddenly broken for no reason

These prices should be before 20% off. Prices pre Covid were so good when on sale

  • +2

I stopped buying Disney discs since they decided not to pay licensing to put IMAX enhanced dolby vision on disc. About 2.5 years now.

  • Since Disney owns 20th Fox so does that mean movies produced under 20th Fox no longer have disc release in Australia too?

    • +6

I'd say so. Pretty shitty tbh. I want Titanic on 4K.

  • +4

Was hoping one day to own Aliens 4K

    • +1

It's coming along with True Lies and The Abyss, woohoo! The withdraw of Disney discs is in Australia not global. 4K discs have no region coding so you can import without worries - it is thought this has played a role, I know almost all my recent 4K purchases have been from overseas because so few movies have come out on 4K here.

  • A quick Google search will show multiple news articles quoting Digital Bits that Disney are officially making GOTG3 the final physical release in Australia. This was after a tweet by Sanity (that was pulled swiftly) which read: Farewell to Disney's physical media in Australia - act fast & don't miss out on your last chance to own your favourite Disney classics, MCU flicks, Star Wars movies & more at Sanity.

For some reason it hasn't been marketed all that well here, but Marcel The Shell With Shoes On recently released on blu ray thanks to ViaVision.

On their website it lists RRP at $35, but JB stocked it at $20. With the discount it's $16 which, I think, is a pretty decent price for a new release

Watching currently and it is very cute and funny thus far

  • DVDs still live and kickin' after killing VHS in glorious 480p.

    • Still regularly outsells Blu-Ray and 4K combined for many titles

  • Not thrilled at the announcement, the chips will fall in similar fashion with other studios. There were rumours that Universal were going to do this a few years ago as well (no real big loss other than The Bourne films, Fast & Furious Franchise, Gladiator…. and JAWS + BTTF lol).

While I've built up a bit of a streaming media collection (across Apple, Xbox and Playstation services over the years) it doesn't have a patch on proper physical media. A lot of people can't tell the difference - but the loss in quality (knowing from seeing the differences over the years) is really poor. Many moons ago I saw how badly compressed (some) dvds were - going from a dual layer to a single layer dvd (effectively 7.9gb gb to 4.0-4.2gb) the quality drop was meh… but a bit more than that and the quality became like watching a badly worn out VHS tape (or occasionally like watching something under water).

A lot of the 4K streams are just marginally better than a dvd, some barely exceeding (or let alone matching) the bitrate or overall quality of a bluray disc version.

I've been buying my movies and tv series and converting them digitally myself for over 20 years now (original motivation in doing so was to stop having to eject discs and change them all the time haha), it'll suck when I won't be able to do it any more!

Haven't purchased a movie from a 20% off sale in a while. Seeing the inside of a JB Hifi these days is depressing - the media section is super condensed to what it used to be.

I hope it doesn't become global, as hoping The Abyss 4K & True Lies 4K will still go ahead as planned for the end of the year.

    • Is they happen, hopefully they are better transfers than Terminator 2

      • Terminator 2 was a remastered bluray that was up-scaled to 4k

        • The 4K uses the 3D source which was DNR’d heavily. The remastered Blu-Ray has more detail from most reports I’ve read.

    • Been waiting decades for those!

  • Doesn't stack with the Buy 2 get 1 free ?
Oop, the price already includes the 20% off.

  • I wonder how much it would cost to sail the high seas and produce your own copy onto a physical 4K disc yourself and print the cover yourself and insert it into a case?

    • Why bother, just use a NAS and Plex or Kodi.

      • While I agree, making a physical disc means it's a hard copy independent of storage devices or networks, can be given or lent to people, can be displayed in a library.

    • Original on 4k and the other is the sequel in 4k

      • Thanks!

    • +1

Yeah, not a lot of people (myself included) realised the original also came out on 4K. It's a bit of a non-event as it's not the extended edition in 4K, which is disappointing.

  • I wish all the chest beating over this forced marketing model manifested in action or pushback outside forums, but human history shows rolling over is the go to plan.
The big corps are clever. Get the herd addicted to streaming and then this .
    Big Yellow Taxi

Pity Amazon only price match some, most don't have the buy 2 get 1 free offer.

  • Hey OB people, can anyone recommend some 4K releases that are worth purchasing.

I bought Inception, The Dark Knight and Interstellar as part of the Buy 2, Get 1 Free promotion through JB Hi-Fi.

My next purchase will most likely be The Lord of The Rings trilogy.

    • +2

I bought 2001: A Space Odyssey, Big Lebowski and Singin in The Rain.

If it helps, try and look into how things were filmed. 35mm film and above (which is rare) will look great in 4k so Jaws and the like are apparently pretty good.

In general the ones I have personally been impressed with are:
      Whiplash
      EEAAO
      Mad Max Fury Road
      Hot Fuzz
      The Matrix

If you want to look globally, the Sony Pictures 30th Anniversary box set is stunning, but expensive.
