S&S drops the price further.

Very good price for a decent cat or small animal litter. Have been using this since Breeders Choice gone missing.

The individual bits are smaller and flatter than Breeders Choice, which means more surface area and lasts a little bit longer. Do not disintegrate as much as breeders choice either. Tracks a bit more though.

Thanks, good price, will see if the cats like it. Have been using Catmate, but its getting scarce and really expensive.

I have been meaning to try wooden pellets as they are highly recommended. I think the last time I looked into it, horse people have them for a lot cheaper than pet shops, you might want to check with your local farmers.

      • Wooden pellets are what we use. $20 a bag that lasts for months and months. Get it as horse bedding ad you said.

This is the stuff we get when we are in Maryborough.

        • Do you use these for your cats?

        • I moved from the wood pellets available at the horse produce store (a few years ago was $18 for a 12kg bag) to Catmate as Catmate was more litter and cheaper (could get it for $16 for the 15kg bag awhile go but it went up to around $24 and now a nuts >$40 on Amazon some days). I might ring and check the prices at the local horse store again. I don't think its popular and shipping is a bit harsh for them, so they can't offer competitive prices.

Making me rethink getting this recycled paper now.. the wooden pellets have been a great litter.

Just started using pine wood pellets here. $13 for a 15kg bag. We have used breeders choice paper pellet cat litter 30L bags for years. At $16 a 30L bag (9.68kg or something) the wood pellets are cheaper, so I am making the switch. Few things I've noticed. The wood pellets can turn into fine sawdust. Not all but some do break down completely. This means if you aren't careful when scooping out you can get sawdust on the floor. However, the wood pellets absorb smell much better. Doesn't matter if our cat does a number 1 or 2 there's absolutely no smell when using pine wood pellets. Breeders choice recycled paper pellets always had some smell. Also, my cat appears to like the wood pellets. Just a note. Apparently pine (softwood) pellets absorb smell better than hardwood. The pine wood pellets we use are made here in Tasmania, so that's why I can get them for $13 for 15kg bag. I'll be using the wood pellets going forward. Other than a little mess that can be made by the sawdust fines, it's much better value and there's no smell plus my cat seems like like them better.

Try this litter box. I got it in preparation to transitioning to wooden pellets. It works for paper litter so far. Poop stays on top, pee goes under, easy to scoop but tracks a fair bit.

          • @frugalftw: That's what we use. The wood pellets do get flicked around though

            • @theguyrules: Ah 🤨 Guess I’ll have to get creative then. My cats prefer the sink these days…

        • Where do you get it from? I need to move away from Breeders Choice….

        • Hi Tessel
          Fellow Taswiegen.
Where do you buy this stuff?

          • @cbap72: Hey, if you are in Hobart go to Pellet Fires Tasmania. The pellets are made by EcoPellets in Bell Bay. Pellet Fires Tas sell 15kg bags for $13. If you are in Lonnie you can buy it from Pellet Fires Tas or Bass Pellet Heaters. Bass do $12.50 a bag if you buy 10+ bags or $13 if less than 10. If you are nowhere near these places (I'm not but I drive to Lonnie) then IGA/Hillstreet sell them as cat litter. It's $14 for a 10kg bag. It's the same thing (pine pellets made by EcoPellets) but sold as cat litter, hence the higher price. If buying from Pellet Fires Tas or Bass make sure you call and ask. There's no stock at the moment. Please don't buy it all. I'm chasing some myself :)

              @tessel: Thanks,
              You must be near Devonport.
I'm in Launy but will only be after one bag to try it out with my 3 Rexes.
              Cheers

A day after ditching the recycled paper in favour of clay the cat stank disapated. Just saying.

    • It depends on your setup. Paper lasts longer and track less compare to clay. Can’t really use clay with the sifting type of litter boxes such as this one.

I feel stupid throwing out clay too, there should be a way to recycle it.

  • Thanks, ordered 2

I moved from breeders choice to Catmate a while back, and it was a huge improvement for our two Bengal cats.
Since the Catmate prices went up I’ve tried a few other wood pellet options but none have been as good as Catmate… they simply don’t last as long.
As @tessel said above, the odour with wood pellets is close to zero, and the waste is simply sawdust. Cleanup is quick and easy. I can’t see us going back to paper pulp pellets now.
