Why? Did you have a bad experience? Hainan are a 5 star airline

    • Why not?

    • +15

You sure you're not thinking of another airline? They're incredibly well rated.

Aside: I don't 'have to try and sell' anything. I just look for great prices and share them.

Chinese airlines are great. Only issue is for white people who expect the same level of english eliquancy as middle eastern / singapore airlines. Food is decent, staff and friendly etc.

My last trip to China was return with China Southern air. Delayed for 8hrs at the airport, past customs so couldn't go out again. Inflight entertainment not working on either leg. Staff didn't speak much English and the meals weren't great. However older plane with literally the roomiest and most comfortable seats I've had in a plane. Would fly with them again just for this.

      • I had very similar experience…. I wouldn't go out of my way to fly with them again, but wouldn't say no if the deal was right - would be more prepared with my own entertainment instead next time

    • I hear the markets there are world renowned.

They got a great viral lab, ya hear?

  • Can someone please tell me with the 2.30-2.45 hrs transfer waiting time. What happen if you wait for your luggage and late to get to the domestic airport for the transfer, will Hainan Air get you onto the next available flight for free or you have to buy another flight from Haikou to Guangzhou?

    • I had a delay with a separate airline, separate booking, and Hainan offered to change my flight after a long faff. You might be waiting a while though depending how often they do the flight.

      • Thanks for the quick reply. Is free of charge from hainan air is delayed? I know their international and domestic airports are completely different location, and their transfer bus takes forever to depart from international arrival to the domestic airport. So with such a short waiting transfer time, don't know if I should book with them or not.

        • It was free, the flight was just going to be a week later, which was a bad thing for me, but IMO if you are flexible another week of holiday sounds alright

Isn't flying into China currently restricted for tourists? Or have they opened up now?

  • +1

Been wanting to visit China since re-opening but no cheap flights from Adelaide. Cmon Hainan Airlines

    • Fly to MEL or SYD if that is your want.
Under $400 to a another country that may or may not be interest to you is cheap.
      It is a choice.

If there's two of you wanting to do the touristy thing , try trip-a-deal circa $1500 each for an 8-day China tour from Adelaide (twin share) with full service Qantas flights, transfers, bus around, and breakfast included daily: https://www.tripadeal.com.au/deals/4721-china-discovery

You can then add on an extra two days to go to Xian / Terracotta warriors, and a bunch of guided entry to attractions etc. Makes it very easy and not bad value.

Amazing how I get down voted some people obviously don't check smart Traveller.gov before booking .

      China

Exercise a high degree of caution

      Along with
      UK
      France
      Belgium
      Indonesia
      India
      Thailand
      Sweden
      Germany

You could add the same warning when visiting the Smart Traveller website. It's always been absurdity over cautious which borders on scaremongering.

  • Anyone know what booking class this flight falls under?

    • Our booking via Hainan airline app. Time around End Oct<>Early Nov
      Mel <<>> Hakou class U
      Hakou <<>> Bejing class Y

      • Is that the same for the return leg?

        • yep, same on return, Y class Beijing to HAK, U class HAK to MEL

@1-Bargain: Thanks heap. Might be worth crediting the points to Velocity for at least one way domestic on the return.

  • Does anyone know what the easiest way to get a visa . The website for the consulate is very confusing. For perth

    • +1

go to the visa website for Perth

      https://www.visaforchina.cn/PER2_EN/

make sure the location is definitely Perth up the top right of the page.

then under step by step guide click visa in the blue left arrow (read all of this info properly)

after you read all that info return to that main home page and click visa in the blue arrow under quick access, it will take to a new page where it will say appointment application at the bottom. click that go through the process to make an appointment at the centre in Perth and make sure you have all things needed for your appointment.

appointments are about 4-6 weeks in advance to get in here at Melbourne centre (not sure if as busy in Perth)
also Melbourne office is strict with the application process you have to have all your dates for flights and accommodations in order or they will tell you to go away and you will need to make another appointment.
so you want to make sure you have everything 100%.

I have traveled to a lot of countries and and applied for a lot of visas china is definitely not hard but they just make you jump through a heap of hoops so its a little painful.

Also little tip for filling out the visa application, you have to provide proof of your flight itinerary and your confirmed hotel bookings.
for the hotels if you have a IHG account or Hilton account (possible other hotels also) you can book dates with a flexible price and you will pay no deposit up front and have a free cancelation policy up until the day of the hotel stay.
you will get a confirmed hotel booking without actually paying any money until the stay. if the visa/trip falls through you can cancel.

  • Are these prices including taxes?
If yes, the taxes are almost equal to these prices. How do they make any profit?

    • +2

      1 yes
2 loss leader. they likely have a few tickets on each plane at this price, which draws the eyeballs.

The upside is if you can get those few on each plane, you're onto a winner!

(Same way Jetstar can have $29 tickets)

  • Visa process for China is very… involved.

  • can you get to japan cheaply from here?
