if we offered free shipping too we'd be losing money. what is your postcode jvisaac? i'll fix up the delivery price for you if you let me know where its going

      • -1

You will be losing more money if you can't get rid of these low spec components:)
Suggest you may want to put a few 160Gb HDDs into the desk and market it as "Storage 480Gb" or "640Gb Storage"!

        • +8

Yea.. putting 4x more hard drives will save them money.

    • +4

I think you should organise your own courier , ha

      • -3

        that wouldnt be free. derrrrrrrrr.

    • $199 too, come on man!

      • -1

        man! on come, too $199

  • +3

it is simply a GOOD DEAL!

  • +3

Im a computer noob, can you put an i7 on this motherboard?

    • +3

you can, it's the same socket!
any 3rd generation CPU can be dropped onto this board. For higher i7 CPU's though you do need to perform a BIOS update though

    • +29

@kelalako If your a computer noob, you dont need an I7

      • +49

        i6 would be enough…

        • +1

I thought that i6 was out 2 years ago …

  • +1

How much more for Bluray Drive?

    • -1

Why would you want a bluray drive when it doesn't have HDMI out?

      • to read blu-ray discs?

  • The mobo doesn't seem to have usb3, but the case has the 3.0 headers?

    • buy a usb3 card then for $10

    • +1

      According to the description..

      COM: Gigabit Ethernet, 2x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0, 2x USB 2.0 (Front)

But the motherboard headers that attach to the front panel don't support USB 3.0 .

So only 2 rear ports have USB 3.0.

    • Yea seems the Rep has changed the Mobo due to being out of stock…

  • How much for no DVDROM , 8GB ram , 1TB HDD. Post to 3350? Any deals on displays going?

    • Hi bargaphile,
It's too messy responding to these inquiries on OzBargain due to the uber spethol post layout, can you email through your inquiry to our sales account?
      [email protected]

  • You have this now? Why not a week ago! Would of been perfect!

  • +5

    Fantastic price REP.
Im not in the market, but id suggest promoting upgrades with the computer for people to see
    ie cpu or hdd

  • -1

I don't see PSU in the spec. It's not a Shaw is it?

    • PSU = 550W Switching PSU, Power Case brand

  • +3

An awesome deal specially for someone planning on upgrading, just use your existing Hard Disk for Operating System or install Windows 7.

If one is ok with Linux, a number of free shareware operating systems are available, e.g SUSE Linux.

If you need help, let me know. Neil

    • +7

Linux distributions are not shareware - shareware is proprietary software provided on a trial basis with built in limitations.

If you install a linux distro, what you get is free and open source software with which you have the freedom to do whatever you want. It's a lot more flexible, and tends to be far more efficient despite the absence of cost.

  • +2

This is all the computer most people really require, with maybe the addition of another internal or external HDD.
My missus's laptop is not as powerful as this and is easily good enough for what she uses it for. Great deal!

  • That is cheapo.

  • How does this perform compared to the HP ProLiant MicroServer that sells at $200 once in a while?

    • +2

$265 is the cheapest right now: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79129

This will be a better workstation than the HP, but as a low-power server the Proliant is almost peerless! Each is more than capable of performing the tasks of the other, simply not as efficiently…comes down to horses for courses! ;)

  • Where are you guys getting windows from? Is home premium for $110 fine or can I get it cheaper elsewhere?

    • +4

Msy sells it for 89. But they will only sell it to customers building a desktop, you can't buy it on its own.

Although 2 years back I was able to buy a copy alongside a graphics card, so their definition of "building a system" may be a bit loose.

      • Thanks much, scrimshaw. I'm going to try going down that path.
If you don't mind me asking, do you have any recommendations on a graphics card to go with this PC?
        Cheers,

        • +1

It depends on your needs. Facebook games or proper 3d games? If it's just Facebook and flash games, you don't need a graphics card.

This system won't really take powerful graphics cards because the Cpu is a major bottleneck, not to mention the power supply is a generic. Generic power supplies aren't stable/ powerful enough to run big gaming cards. At most I would stick in a Radeon 76xx series, but nothing more powerful.

        • The whole lot is for my little brother. He'll want to use it for a few 3D games once I start buying them for him. Definitely not the latest and greatest.
Say, Diablo 3 on the lowest setttings would be the worst. Would that be possible on a Radeon 76xx?

        • +2

See my post below, the best GPU this system will probably handle is either a GT 640 from NVIDIA or a HD 7750 from AMD. They don't need an extra power connector so should work fine, and are quick enough for most games at medium settings and modest resolutions :)

They will run Diablo 3 fine. Also the CPU is fast enough to not be a bottleneck to these cards. Celerons have come a long way, it is roughly on par with the core 2 duo E7xxx series. Remember a lot of games can't even use more than two cores so a dual core is still OK to use for budget gaming.

        • Thanks Zenskas! After I receive delivery of this I'll visit MSY for one of those two cards, and will see if they're willing to do Windows 7 for $89 as well.

Thanks so much both of you guys for the advice. Absolutely helpful and appreciated in every way :)

        • Not a problem! If I were you I would get the 7750, it's faster than the GT 640 and can be had for around the same price.

        • un charted I'd honestly also look to replace the powersupply as as generic ones are generally terrible and though the card itself might not require and extra powercable the card will still be drawing the power from the pcie slot. I honestly don't know why businesses use garbage for the psu as it powers the rest of the parts.

        • Hey dmtdude. Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated. OzBargain has such a helpful community!

May I ask how come? Is it to improve the card/entire system performance, or is it a stabillity thing? I'm not good with builds, but if it'll say, extend the life of the whole system by not frying it, I'm more than happy to spend a bit more.

Do you, or anyone else, have any recommendations for a PSU to go with the original deal + 7750 ? Looking at Zenskas post below he mentions "Antec or Corsair PSU." Any particular one?

        • Sent a PM with more info! If anyone else is wondering just let me know :)

  • Can I use Windows XP 32bit with this computer?

    • +1

You can, but you may not be able to utilise the full 4Gb of Ram.

  • not really good with computers but if i buy this and add a decent video card to it, will it be able to play guild wars 2 on normal or high settings?

    • Sure it would run (on around the lowest settings), but it would be painful to play.

    • +1

The PSU won't handle anything more than a budget card due to the power requirements of more decent cards, having said that there are some OK low powered cards out there that don't require an extra power source (like a 6 or 8 pin connection). They might not play GW2 on high very smoothly, probably medium settings at a res of under 1920x1080 but I don't own GW2 so am not 100% sure.

As for which card to get, for NVIDIA the best card you could use is a GT 640, for AMD the best you could use is a 7750. Both of these run off the power provided by the PCI-e slot.

Otherwise you could upgrade the PSU to something like a budget Antec or Corsair PSU then use a faster GPU. It will cost at least $50 to get anything worthwhile though.

  • Great deal, Rep. Well done.

  • +1

    check your email rep!

  • +1

Is it worth it to upgrade to a 8 gb RAM and 1T HDD?

    • +2

RAM: that depends mostly on how many applications you like to have open at once.
HDD: that depends on what you plan to store on it. If you want to store lots of music or mp3s, 1TB might be beneficial.

The good thing about both these components, is that you can easily add more in later. Why not try with the 4gb and 160gb HDD first? If you then find they aren't enough, just slot in another stick of RAM or an extra HDD.

    • +1

      $199 too, come on man!

      • -1

If I put a $1 price tag on a piece of dog turd would you buy that as well?
It is not $200 well spent. Save the $200, and when you have enough money, spend $400-$500 on technology that wasn't made when Henry III was king of England.

        • I don't agree with him but gets an upvote for being a funny bastard

    • +1

come on, o/s is up to individual preference.
i prefer to get my os from my fave store: torrent pty ltd

      • haha as do I, but you have to be realistic.

        • True, but being realistic also includes understanding that many OzB'ers are students who have either free or significantly discounted software including OS's; or have employers with licencing arrangements for MS products allowing for home use.

I also prefer to install my own OS so I can customise it; there's nothing I hate more than getting a new machine with a poorly configured OS or a load of OEM bloatware on it! As an 'IT Manager' I would have thought you'd understand that better than anyone…

        • Nice sarcasm Stew, well done, pat on the back :)

I understand perfectly mate, I always tell people if they are buying a machine from wherever it may be, to reinstall windows and only reinstall the drivers, not the applications.

        • Thanks for the pat, but it wasn't actually sarcasm. Having had IT roles in the past myself, I had to learn first-hand what a PITA bad OEM installations can be. However; I don't understand how, if you could query this:

          Comes with no OS pre-configured…

You can then go on to advocate this:

…I always tell people if they are buying a machine from wherever it may be, to reinstall windows and only reinstall the drivers, not the applications.

The two just seem antithetical to me…if you're just gonna suggest re-installation anyway, why complain about saving money buying sans OS & installing yourself???

    • +2

cause me hours of grief in the future.
      Comes with no OS pre-configured

It takes about 30 minutes to get Windows installed and running.

another couple of hundred for Windows 7,

Windows does not cost a 'couple of hundred', try $89?

      onboard graphics, puny disk drive,

      Never heard of upgrading?

      a pathetic warranty.

1 year RTB warranty is standard with Australian retailers. And this computer costs $199…

This is a good setup for the average user whose computer needs are fairly basic and don't use it for gaming. Hell I use a Core 2 Duo E8500 for my HTPC and it's still going strong after 4.5 years.

      • -5

I know how long it takes to install Windows, IT Manager here so shh :).

Got a bit carried away with the price of Windows, I wouldn't own anything other than pro, and to bundle it with this system is $160.

Why would you upgrade a machine that has such poor components? Bad motherboard, Horrific CPU, no GPU, Puny disk as previously mentioned. Upgrading is just going to add more money into the money pit that this machine would become, where people could be putting the money to better use buy buying a machine that isn't completely woeful.

You keep saying it costs $199, but to work as, oh lets say, a computer worth owning, it is going to cost more.

Either way, your money, like I said, I was just giving people advice, not trying to start a flame war with people that enjoy throwing money into the fiery pits of hell.

        • +3

We've already had one person here called a derp…I'm sorry but you're cruising for a derpin'! ;)

        • +1

Why in the hell would you want the extra features of Win 7 pro on something like this?

Mobo is fine, CPU is not horrific at all (actually on par with older core 2 duo's which are still heaps fast enough and a lot faster than any sub $400 laptop), no GPU is needed for basic tasks, puny disk is still large enough for a few apps and a backup of the family's photo collection. Hell my parents have a 320gb drive in their system, they use it everyday and it's only had 50gb used. The CPU/RAM in their system is slower (Athlon II X2 + 2GB RAM) but still heaps fast enough for their uses.

This isn't marketed at gamers or video editors ;)

        • +1

He is right in a sense guys.

As long you do absolutely NOTHING to this machine and use it as is; it is a bargain per se.

But the total cost of ownership goes way too high to justify purchasing it in the first place the moment you start contemplating adding or upgrading components.

Like Zenskas mentioned, the problem with no-name brand PSUs (especially ones that aren't 80PLUS certified) is that the they're horribly inefficient and they can't actually come close to pushing the stickered wattage or delivering to .01 of a volt on of all of the rails.

So that has to go if you want a GPU in there; with a GPU in there you're bottlenecking the entire thing unless that GPU is an old-timer you happen to have lying around.

Personally I just don't ever put myself through gambling with no-name brand PSU's in the first place.
I would replace that immediately anyway and that's at least $80 dollars right there, combined with $120 for say something suitable for this kind of processor (GTX 550 Ti) puts the cost to $400 and for that amount you may as well chuck in $20 dollars more and get this which would actually make a decent gaming rig:
          http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_conf…

Then there's the case itself and the HDD, the next most problematic components; the casereally has nothing in the way of cooling, pretty sub-standard mid-tower in terms of space, no free drive bays, etc…

I think personally if you require anymore CPU/GPU grunt or storage space, you need to properly invest in a slightly more long-term and future-proof solution.

Otherwise if you just want to surf the web, watch .flv's, listen to music, do Uni work and hoard files on there… this is perfectly economical.

        • +2

instead of beating the dead horse to a mushy messy pulp, general advice is that this computer is for basic users only. No upgrading, no longevity, no future-proof-ness. Case closed.

        • +3

Otherwise if you just want to surf the web, watch .flv's, listen to music, do Uni work and hoard files on there… this is perfectly economical.

The CPU in the machine in this deal is MORE POWERFUL than any computer that I have in my house.

I am typing and surfing and listing on eBay and doing all my photo editing on a VERY old P4 2.66 with 533MHz FSB, no Hyperthreading, and 2 filled slots of a total 2GB of RAM. It's a dog, but it is capable of doing everything that I need to do.

Our second most commonly machine is a 1.6GHz Netbook with an Atom and 2GB of RAM. And it has a 160GB hard drive which is still less than 1/2 full even after 2 years continuous usage.

We game on a P4 2.8 and a E8400 - neither of which is as powerful as this box.

It's certainly not a gaming machine, but for general use it's more than sufficient.

        • +1

I'd never buy something like this, and agree on spending a bit more for a better pc. But for what it is, its great for the price. For those who mainly use their pc for web browsing, I don't see why they would need to spend more.

        • +2

Exactly…….. You don't need a Ferrari to go to the grocers.
I wish a lot more would realise this and think outside their own little world.

        • Of course you can game on a P4 and a E8400 but I bet you don't play any triple-A games made in the last 4 years do you?

        • You'd be surprised. Starcraft 2, all games made with the Source engine, Mass Effect series, Modern Warfare series, all run pretty well on a stock clock E8400.

The only thing it seems to strugge with are all the big sandbox type games like Mafia / GTA4 and Battlefield series where the recommended requirements are a quad core.

  • +17

I gave it a positive because the rep called someone a derp.

  • excellent, upgraded to a 1TB 7200rpm for that extra $60 and bought it for the gf.

    big positive from me.

  • "Price Breakdown!"

  • Is it possible to get the Hard drive upgraded to 1TB?
If so how much extra would it be

    • Rep said to someone else they can upgrade it to a 7200rpm 1TB drive for $60. Which sounds like a reasonable price to me :)

    • look 2 posts up and you will have your answer

    POST UPDATE: 6:20PM EST
ADVERTISED MOTHERBOARD (ECS H61H2-M7) HAS SOLD OUT! ALL NEW ORDERS FROM THIS POINT WILL BE USING THE FOLLOWING MOTHERBOARD - JW H61M-L3

    DIFFERENCES:
New motherboard does NOT have HDMI
New motherboard does NOT have USB 3.0
New motherboard DOES have 5.1 surround sound card

If you have already ordered, your order is fine and will be sold as initially advertised. Any NEW orders will be using the above motherboard.

    • have a mobo with DVI or HDMI out and i'm sold
missed out on other deal :(

    • I would hope a reduce in price, due to the above losses…

      • at least 50% off..

    • This is a major downgrade - no HDMI :(

  • +2

Aagh, VGA makes baby Jesus cry!

A good deal though for a basic machine.

    • +3

Disagree. VGA when baby Jesus was around was pretty modern tech.

  • 1 VGA output? Does it have DVI output?

    • +1

You can get plenty of cheap VGA to DVI adapters, but like Daabido says the drop to VGA from HDMI is like a kick square in the nuts…then there's the grief over the loss of USB3.0 to cope with…

  • How much faster would this be then a Athlon 4800

  • Any on i7 3gen desktop deal? thanks

  • Where's my free shipping? :)

  • +1

    Can it run Crysis?

  • Never heard of the brand JW before… also the loss of DVI and USB3.0 definitely makes it not as good as the old setup. As others have said above, it is a kick to the balls to lose those two things and for such a basic set up a crappy built in 5.1ch sound card doesn't really do much, poor sound quality and will probably never go past 2.0ch.

That being said, it's still a decent deal.
Was tempted to get one to save the hassle of putting one together myself, but will pass now and build one myself. More control over components used and I get that satisfactory feeling of building something myself.

    Edit:
Just noticed if I build it myself it'll roughly cost the same as having one shipped to me but I'll get a 500GB HDD.

  • What would be the highest safe overclock possible on the g540 with stock fan?

  • This is a great deal.
But thought I would just list the basic system I just put together :
M'board Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P $61.80 ARC computers (free local pickup)
CPU AMD Athlon II X2 260 3.2Ghz $56.00 Netplus (Ozbargain free shipping)
DVD Samsung 22X SATA DVD Writer $18.00 Netplus (Ozbargain free shipping)
    RAM DDR3 4GB PC3 10600 13333MHz $19.40 Ebay Hong Kong (free postage)
PSU 550W 12cm fan quiet Generic $25.00 ARC computers (free local pickup)
Case&HDD Reused from my previous computer
Windows 7 downloaded and activated for free

    TOTAL COST $180.20

I am really happy with it and have to thank this forum for pointing out some of the bargain parts.
So I suppose if you want to reuse a few parts from your old computer you could save a few bucks and pick your prefered motherboard and CPU.

edit: where did all my format tabs go.

    • "Windows 7 downloaded and activated for free"….. I am assuming aquired through non-legitimate channels? Otherwise interested to know your method.

The reason that this machine is perfect for 50% of the population of Australia is that the only thing these people use computers for is:

    • Facebook
    • Youtube
    • Google
    • Aka the internet
    • Email
    • Word processing

Why would you need anything more.
Oh and chuck a bit of music in the mix too.

That's why this is a great deal.
